L – Feb. 28 at St. Louis (221) - Road game in a place we rarely win
W – Mar. 2 vs. VCU (87) - Blind squirrel, nut
L – Mar. 6 vs. St. Joe's (54) - They're not 54 good, but they are good
L – Mar. 9 at George Mason (76) - Road game in a place we rarely win

Burton’s transfer was a big setback for our basketball season, but Bigelow has significantly stepped up his game from last year and appears to be adding more value to the team then Burton did during conference play (understand we have a long way to go). Burton’s shooting percentage last year during conference play declined considerable and unfortunately for him, it is also happening this year.

After our 1st 3 conference games Bigelow is currently 4th in A10 in rebounding at 8.7 per game, 21st in 3 point shooting ave 44.4%, 10th in free throw percent 90.0%, 21st in steels at 1.3 per game. He probably would not have had these numbers if Burton was still on the team.

Burton has been struggling in conference play. After 5 games he is only shouting 31.4% and his 3 point shooting ave is 12.5%, Free throw ave 76.9, 7.8 rebounds a game and less then 1 steel per game.

Mooney has rightfully earned praise for bringing in a group of guys that appear to have great chemistry, play for each other, and are winning. No idea what guys are making or not making, but I don't think we are out there outbidding for players. SDSU is very much another school that is not outbidding others, bringing in guys for fit and program culture. Evidenced by losing Keshad Johnson to Arizona for high six figures per much intel.

Our guy Rick has a billionaire donor, an NIL general manager, and brought in a bunch of guys. Seems like it is not quite working out, and if you are a player, look out b/c you just got chucked under the bus and a crazed Slick Rick has the gas on the pedal:

Bigelow. Rebounding, timely 3s, inspiring dunks, slashing drives, and money at the free throw line. We need him at least 30 minutes a game coming down the stretch.
We have other clutch players, King, Bailey, Quinn...but when the game gets close in the last 5 minutes or when our opponents are making a run, I find myself hoping the ball goes to Bigs.

Announcers mentioned it in one of the last couple games - Moon saying he wanted UR to play with more pace. Since someone mentioned how the defense has given up a bunch of points the past few games, thought it bears discussing whether that is actually defensive issues - p&r defense, etc - or whether UR is indeed playing a more uptempo game, which naturally lends itself to more possessions and points given up?

I def. feel that this team has the offensive talent to play fast/faster, and especially against teams that are less disciplined, UR gets a significant edge out of more possessions. We turn it over less frequently than opponents so should have more shot opportunities. And a looser game leads to more back cuts against lazy defenders - feel like we got a good number of layups off back cuts against GW and URI, same vs Fordham.

I think the defense is still there, but teams do seem to be onto the idea that they can pick and roll UR and we will play drop coverage with our big, leaving the guard to defend the pick at the point of attack. It also sort of forces our big into less than ideal rebounding position if they do drive from that play. Am glad Davidson's 3 point shooting big is out for this game (I think?) because that was the main play they exploited in the first matchup, that pick and pop 3.

Overall though, I'm okay with a faster pace, especially at home. I think it suits Jordan's game pretty well, and when he gets going, UR rolls.

Per JOC. Knee surgery for an injury in the GW game. Not a huge loss in terms of what he's given us this year, but I think we will miss him in the A10 tourney.

LaSalle is struggling. We must stomp on them to keep the NET moving forward. They put up 29 in their last game. 29. In fact, they have averaged only 42 in the last 4 in mostly blowout losses. For the season, they have scored 50 or less in 10 games.

Must win in convincing fashion!

Amazing how many top players have opted out, due to draft status or portal transfers. Do you think they'd play if in the playoffs ? This may well force the NCAA to increase the number of teams in the playoffs or watch the bowls continue to erode.

Bounce back required and then we will still be in a good position - Spiders 78-71.

Posted this on the basketball board because as coach of Davidson, Maryland, and JMU Lefty had lots of interaction with the Spiders. Very colorful on the sidelines and the story of his car being bogged down in the mud when Maryland played us in the opening game at Robins has become part of Spider lore. First acquainted with him when he coached the high school Newport News Typhoon from 1957 to 1959. RIP Lefty!

Time to get this fired up for the season. Just in case we are in at-large consideration come March 🤪

selected amateur "highlights" were hard to find last night...there are even a few selected "frustrations" included...

any fan who's been watching UR basketball for a while knew that there had to be a game like this one out there somewhere...last night was it...after watching 12 straight in person wins at the Robins Center the way we played and were beaten last night was surprising and almost shocking...this team had spoiled us with their play that consistently had found ways to win...no matter what we did last night we couldn't find a way!...the Minutemen just whipped us...

I hope the game was an anomaly...now the team has the challenge of rebounding from the adversity of this loss and the VCU loss...as several posters have already pointed out the Rams, and now the Minutemen, have shown the A-10 the blueprint of how to defeat us...Mooney acknowledged postgame that UMass played extremely physical and disrupted us...he stated that we are usually able to compensate with crisp ball movement etc....we'll see if the Spiders can adjust to what they are likely to face each week...

the schedule gives the squad George Washington on Saturday...the revolt is not going so well...they've lost their last seven...I hope the coaches and players have learned enough from this tough spell to adjust strategically, mentally and physically to whatever they face on the court...

unexpectedly battling for a top tier finish in the A-10 was tremendous fun and entertainment in the first half...nothing would be much more disappointing than to watch it fade away in the second half of the schedule...battle to keep it going!

No video for the #20 men against Robert Morris since it's a neutral site at Georgetown Prep, but they're rolling 17–6 in the third.

The #19 women are at Campbell and also cruising, up 10–6 in the third.

Our 20-4 Spider Ladies take on GW at the Robins Center. They deserve a big crowd! Make it a pre-SuperBowl party! Go Spiders!

selected 2nd half amateur highlights...I was a little worried about this game despite the Spiders strong A-10 first half and the Explorers woeful record...

if you've watched college basketball for a while it's not unusual to see a good team (like UR) have a letdown after a loss to a bitter rival like VCU and compound that with having to stew on the loss for a week, breaking all of the rhythm, chemistry, connectivity or whatever adjective/adverb/noun you want to use to describe why the first half A-10 Spiders were so good...

and I think we saw some of its residue yesterday versus outmanned LaSalle, but like the first half of our A-10 schedule, the team found a way to overcome their struggles and make the plays necessary to get the win...with a big assist in the final 12 minutes from an in game adjustment to "small ball"...over the years the Spiders have not been known often for game changing in game adjustments...this one worked big time!

with Dji Bailey at the center position and expertly assisted by Bigelow, King, Hunt and Harris, Richmond recovered from the 16-0 LaSalle run to finish the Explorers with a 30-12 close out to get the important win...small ball made the offense and the defense work extremely well as UR recovered and hammered LaSalle down the stretch...it was interesting to road test and find another way to win...

I can only imagine how intense the second half of our A-10 schedule is going to be...battling Dayton, VCU and Loyola-Chicago for a top tier finish is going to make every game seem like "VCU's Super Bowl"...but this team finds ways to win and I expect we'll need to as the schedule plays out...looking forward to a great A-10 2nd half...
