M&W Tennis

Interesting...Barrick will now be director of tennis in charge of both programs, with Jacob and Emily Dunbar as associate head coaches for both programs. Looks like Wesselink will be sticking around as a volunteer assistant coach for the women, while former Randolph Macon player Grant Sarver has been brought on as an assistant for the men.

To allow this to become more of a living document and give you all access when ever you'd like, I've made it into a Google Sheet so everyone has easy access to view at their leisure. Below is the link that you can bookmark or save for easy access:

These are all players who we've contacted according to various accounts on Twitter/X or other sources. To keep info organized, I'll continue to post information I find about contacts/visits etc. in the 2024 Transfer Portal Season thread as we already have quite a bit of info posted there.

If you have any suggestions on stats/data you'd like to see added, formatting, or anything else that would be helpful, please post below and I'd be happy to incorporate. I'll try to keep this updated as much as possible, but definitely let me know if I'm missing something you find. Hope everyone enjoys this!

2024 Baseball Season

The 2024 baseball schedule just released, link is below. Only two games against power conference opponents (BC & UVA) and looks to be a pretty soft schedule overall, which makes sense for what will be rebuilding team with a first-year coach. Also, the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship has now been moved to a neutral site at the new Capital One Park outside their HQ in Tysons Corner.

"UR will host non-conference series against Mount St. Mary's (Feb. 23-25), Marist (Mar. 8-10), Cornell (Mar. 15-17), and single games versus Princeton (Mar. 11) and Lafayette (Mar. 13) before heading south for a weekend series at High Point (Mar. 22-25).

The 2024 Central Virginia Challenge opponents include Boston College (Mar. 1), Sacred Heart (Mar. 2) and Central Connecticut State (Mar. 3).

Richmond will also face in-state non-conference foes: William & Mary (Feb. 20), at James Madison (Mar. 6), home (May 14) and away (Mar. 19) against Old Dominion, at 2023 Men's College World Series participant Virginia (Mar. 26), against VMI (Apr. 9), home (Apr. 16) and away (Apr. 2) against Longwood, and host Norfolk State (Apr. 23). The Spiders will also split a home (Feb. 27) and away (May 7) series against Towson.

The Spiders host Atlantic 10 Conference series against George Mason (Mar. 29-31), George Washington (Apr. 12-14), Dayton (May 3-5), and crosstown rivals VCU (May 16-18). UR will hit the road for league games against Fordham (Apr. 5-7), Davidson (Apr. 19-21), St. Bonaventure (Apr. 26-28) and Rhode Island (May 10-12). President Edward L. Ayers announced November 5, 2012 Keith Gill as the University of Richmond's director of athletics. Gill, 40, has served as director of athletics and recreation at American University since June 2007.

In five years at American, Gill led the athletic department to unprecedented heights, highlighted by 25 team conference championships, 16 individual conference champions and 25 All-Americans. In Gill's first season in 2007-08, the men's basketball team, coached by Jeff Jones, won the Patriot League title, earning the school's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The Eagles repeated the feat in 2008-09. Three other teams, men's cross country, field hockey and volleyball were crowned Patriot League champions during Gill's first year.

AU's more than 250 student-athletes have flourished in the classroom, as well. Under Gill's guidance, the Eagles' 16 teams have earned a combined grade point average over 3.0 for 23 consecutive semesters. In 2011-12, 121 student-athletes were named to the university's Dean's List as the department posted a 3.36 combined GPA.

Gill's vast experience in college athletics includes two stints at the NCAA, as well as senior athletic administration positions at the University of Oklahoma and Vanderbilt University.

"Keith brings to Richmond an outstanding record of ensuring competitive success and student-athlete success," said President Ayers. "His own experience as a student-athlete; his work at the NCAA; and his leadership in the Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, and American programs have given him a broad perspective on intercollegiate Athletics. He is widely regarded for his leadership, integrity, and commitment to student-athletes, and I look forward to working with him to build on the remarkable achievements and overall excellence of Spider Athletics."

Gill inherits an athletic program with more than 350 student-athletes competing primarily in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Football and women's golf are members of the Colonial Athletic Association. Since 2000, Spider teams have captured 45 conference titles. The 2008 football team won the Division I National Championship.

"Tiffany and I are so very happy about our new home at the University of Richmond," said Gill. "I want to thank President Ayers, Provost Allred, and the entire search committee for offering me this wonderful opportunity. I'm honored to become part of this institution with its rich academic and athletic traditions. I cannot wait to get started."

Prior to his arrival at American, Gill spent three years at Oklahoma as senior associate athletics director. He oversaw a major portion of OU athletics, including men's basketball, women's soccer and baseball, and the supervision of personnel, budgets, facilities, fundraising, student-athlete issues and the selection and evaluation of coaches for those sports. He worked with the athletic director and staff in overseeing the strategic and annual planning process for the department.

Gill was the director of membership services at the NCAA from 2000-04. He developed and communicated policies related to Division I intercollegiate athletics, including governance, rules compliance, diversity, gender equity, academic integrity, student-athlete welfare, fiscal integrity, strategic planning, sportsmanship and legislation. He oversaw and ensured the effective operation of the athletics certification program, and managed a staff of 35 who provided education and guidance to Division I institutions conducting their periodic self-studies. Gill began his career in intercollegiate athletics with his first stint at the NCAA from 1995-99 as a membership services representative.

At Vanderbilt in 1999 and 2000, Gill was an assistant athletic director, working to implement the annual planning process to help 16 athletics teams achieve their academic and competitive goals. He worked with the National Commodore Club, major gifts, media relations and marketing and supported the Vanderbilt board of trustees by working with the athletics committee.

Gill, who will officially begin his duties December 11, 2012, succeeds Jim Miller, who remains at Richmond in the newly-created position of special assistant to the president for athletic advancement. Miller served as Director of Athletics since 2000.

Gill is a graduate of Duke University, as is his partner, Tiffany Speaks, who is American's Senior Director of the Center for Diversity & Inclusion. Gill was a four-year football letter-winner at Duke. The Orlando, Fla. native earned his masters degree from the University of Oklahoma.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT KEITH GILL
Jeff Jones, American University Head Men's Basketball Coach

"I am certainly familiar with the University of Richmond, so when Keith asked me about the school and the position, I didn't hesitate in telling him Richmond would be the perfect situation for him - with academics and athletics.

"Both as a person and as an athletic director, Keith is an extremely positive individual. He is not a guy who thinks, 'we can't do that'. Instead, he says, 'how can we accomplish what we want to do'? He did a fantastic job at AU. He moved the needle and really made a difference. Keith has great energy that will be contagious to everyone around him. He will be very visible but he's not looking to get attention. He's a great listener. And as a coach, I can tell you he will do everything he can for the coaches to be successful and the student-athletes to have the best experience possible."

Carolyn Schlie Femovich, Patriot League Executive Director
"Keith Gill is an accomplished and talented athletic administrator. He has provided excellent leadership for the athletic department at American and developed important relationships with their academic community. Keith has been a strong contributor to the governance of the Patriot League and advancement of the League nationally. We congratulate Keith on this new opportunity at Richmond and know that he will bring great vision and leadership to their athletic programs."

Proud of this team!

Coming off a playoff year, lost key players new O Coordinators, many inexperienced, or limited experienced players. Started off poorly, but the players nor the staff quit, they kept it together to win 8 regular season games. With all factors considered this is a team we can all be proud of. Those that jumped off the wagon early, lesson learned,

Spider Collective NIL

Anyone have any information on the Spider Collective NIL and what is has been up to? How much money have they raised? How much have they given out, etc.

Or is this still a secret Fight Club situation where the first rule of Spider NIL is not to talk about Spider NIL. Just thinking with the transfer portal being open and trying to get guys, this is where NIL money could really have an impact IF the school wanted to go that direction.

Chris Manon - Cornell Transfer - Visit 3/28

OK, feel free to delete if you think this will get too messy - but feel like anyone we get a visit from should get a thread.

Really like his size / skills / steals / bball IQ combination. As Sman noted, would fit great on the wing next to Dji or hopefully not in place of Dji. Does a little bit of everything. As a 6'5 guard, knows how to use his size to get to the rim it appears from highlights. Sounds like there will be some high level competition for him obviously. But to me seems like a super fit on both fronts.

Next year

I expect Hunt, Dji, and Walz to start with 2 incoming transfers/freshman. We lose our top two 3 point guys in King and Bigs and likely have to replace them with 3 point guys if we are to match the success of this season.

PG...we saw what King did for us. Hopefully, the right transfer PG saw that too and will be the perfect fit like King was. Tyne showed some promise, but I'm not sure he is ready to be a big minute PG, so our best option is probably the portal.

Hunt. I really liked what he brought and think he had a solid year. He also showed what a great leader he is, and should be an even bigger leader next year. We might need a little more scoring from him next year, and I would like to see him shoot more 3s. He made 22 of 57 (38.6%). So doubling that would help us tremendously.

Dji. He had a really good year at both ends of the court. He is really good at driving and did a good job finishing at the basket. He needs to dramatically improve his FT shooting, and I still think he needs to find a way to at least be a threat from 3 if left open. He averaged 31 minutes a game, but only shot 38 3s ( 12-38 for 31.6%). Regardless of who we land in the portal, I'm not sure they will match the volume and percentage from 3 that King (84-203 for 41.4%) and Bigs ( 48-128 for 37.2%) gave us. So, Dji has to work and work and work that much more on becoming a 3 point threat.

Walz. I liked what I saw this year. He is physical, he can block some shots, doesn't back down from anyone, and thank goodness he doesn't shoot the floater. I appreciate everything Quinn gave us, and he had some huge games for us, but I was never a fan of his floaters and push shots. Even when he made a few, I think our opponents were more than happy to give him those all game long. When he shot those, we weren't shooting 3s, weren't shooting lay ups, and weren't drawing fouls. It's just not an efficient shot and I hope we never see it again. At 7 feet tall, I just never understood why he couldn't take one or two more dribbles for the layup or slam, or draw a foul at the rim, especially considering he rarely got doubled. But, he did a lot of real good things for us this year, so just because I didn't like his floaters and push shots doesn't mean he wasn't a good player for us. He absolutely was and we will miss him. Back to Walz, I think he is ready for good minutes. I like how active and physical he is, and with more minutes, he will need to stay out of foul trouble and be a key inside presence for us.

Bench: Roche. Need a bounce back year from him. I would never count him out. If you can shoot, you can shoot, and we all know he can shoot. It wouldn't surprise me to see him get his confidence back next year and be a key piece for us.

Tyne. Love his quickness and confidence with the ball. Needs to be much better from 3 point land. He got a lot of good looks and needs to knock more of them down.

Everything else is too much of a guess right now. Not sure how many minutes our current freshman will get next year. Hopefully, Soulis is ready to get minutes and back up Walz. Hard to tell what roles Tanner, Smith, and Graham will have without seeing much of them yet. I think Noyes might be exactly who we saw this year, so not sure if I expect him to be a rotation guy. Maybe he can prove me wrong, kind of like Dji did this year. I'm excited about Robinson and McGlothin coming in and McGlothin looks like he could get some minutes from day 1. Who knows? Maybe even start, because the minutes will be there to grab.
