Roster 25-26

Guards - Tyne , Kirby Mooney, Argabright, Harper,

Forwards - Beagle, Robinson, AP, Tanner, McGlothin, Graham, Richardson

Center - Walz , Soulis

Normally wouldn't count Mooney and Graham so much, but I guess with new rules they are taking up a spot.

Pretty bleak at the moment. Not seeing any All A10 type performers. As a few others have noted, it is probably a good thing if we get a few more into the portal. Only reason we wouldn't is the culture of comfort is just too hard to leave the nest. The guard room is really hurting. I know Tyne showed a little something down the stretch, but in general he didn't improve much on freshman year, and at his size unless he is going to be a huge disrupter or scorer he becomes a liability. Probably be best if two out of three from Beagle, Tanner, and AP were to hit the portal, but we will see. Mooney and Graham, well we are likely stuck with them taking up space. Not too worried about them, if we get some others out, b/c 15 is a lot of players - I know we want to increase Mooney's chances to get a helpful player, but sometimes its OK to have guys on the bench that are fully committed.
Hoping to have Walz and Soulis back. I still think Soulis has a good amount of upside. Hopefully full healthy and can find some type of competitive outlet to play good competition and improve this summer. Walz is Walz, had a good stretch at end of year, but didn't do a lot prior. But he is big and can bang and tries hard mostly. Hope he is back.

Despite the narrative on here that JRob and McGlothin must stink b/c they couldn't beat out the other guys on the roster - I am still high on them and think they could be players. I have this sneaky feeling that Moon and his boy 80s fan over paid to get AP, Beagle, Nesko and crew - and therefore felt committed to playing them. Writing was on the wall early for the freshman, (and as sman points out) why not take a year off and extend your NIL earnings window? Makes sense to me.

But man on man we need guards, two of them. Bad.

David Thomas - Transfer Commit

We have our first transfer pickup - DePaul G David Thomas (previously played at Mercer in '23-24). 6'1 G, should have 2 years left.

Averaged 3.7 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 15 minutes/game this season, but had solid numbers as a freshman at Mercer - 11.0 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Career 36% from three and shot 40% on almost 3 attempts per game his freshman year.

Colby Duggan - 2025 Transfer Visit

He kicked off our 2025 transfer portal thread with his early entry and our interest, but now things are ramping up with him and he's planning to take a visit to the Spiders. Some stiff company though.

After a First-Team All-CAA campaign (15.7 PPG, 6.2 RPG), the 6-foot-7 forward is scheduling visits. “I’ll be at Richmond and Providence soon,” Duggan said. Butler and Wake Forest Demon Deacons remain in the mix, per sources.

Around the A-10: 2024–25 Edition

Figured we could use a thread separate from the betting one to follow how our conference mates are doing.

14 squads in action on opening day, with 13 of them playing D-I competition. Davidson was the exception, hosting D-III William Peace, and of course the Spiders were not in action. The A-10 went a respectable 11–3 on the day, with several squads recovering from early deficits to score wins.

Not a lot of surprises I guess. Mostly beating up on inferior competition, though Loyola only winning by 5 over Chicago State is a bit surprising to me even though Chicago State isn't quite the basement dweller they were a few years ago. SLU falling to Santa Clara was a missed opportunity for a decent win...gotta have those if you've hoping to be a contender. Hope Avila is okay.

I don't know whether to be surprised about Duquesne losing to Lipscomb...it's Duquesne. VCU rolled over Bellarmine with their guards doing a ton of damage. Not a lot of bench production and they really only went 8 deep. Billups only got 4 minutes but had 5 points, while Jennings was scoreless in 15 minutes.

The Scholars League

recently when searching the internet to see if the Patriot League allowed NIL money for its football athletes I stumbled across this interesting and thought provoking idea from a group that calls itself the William and Mary Sports Blog...

the story lays out a proposed Scholars League of like minded academic universities and colleges that would prefer to keep the academic oriented athletics model versus the revenue chasing, free agent, and commercial professional model that the Power Four is evolving into...

the Scholars League would model itself on the Ivy league and Patriot League approach...both Leagues "opted out" of the House settlement...

there has been quite a bit of speculation as to what W&M will do with football and athletics, particularly since they did not "opt in" to the Hose settlement...

I'm sure this group does not speak for the W&M AD, but it could reflect some of their thinking...thus their delay in making a decision?

the proposed Scholars League would be 10 like minded teams...their proposal includes UR as one of the ten for football and all sports...

Here's the link: https://wmsportsblog.com/2025/02/03/the-scholars-league-a-new-model-for-true-student-athletes/

we "opted in" saying we want to play men's and women's basketball at the highest level possible...right now that is the A-10...the Scholars League for those two sports would clearly be a step down from our stated goal...

Gallipoli: You've done a good job over the years of keeping an eye on the Indians...you know anything about this?

Go Spiders!

NCAA Coaching Carousel

I don't see this impacting UR in anyway as Mooney I believe is safe for at least 2 more years, if not 3 and would expect he puts together a winning season in that timeframe. But interesting to see some of the rumors and happenings around college hoops and some of these could have an impact on the A10.

The shocker in my opinion is NC State and Keatts parting ways. This year has been a down year for them, but overall - he has been at NC State 8 years and they have made the tourney in 3 years, with a final four run just in 2024. I would think that final four run alone buys you 3-4 years after it occurs. He has won 20+ games in 5 out of the 8 seasons, and in 2 years made the NIT. So clearly looks like something behind the scenes happening in NC State. But that will be an opening that will likely get some looks and 2 coaches from the A10 high on the list for probably every major program will be VCU's Odom and Mason's Skinn. Odom will likely get a lot of calls. Skinn will likely be on the list of some programs - but probably a 3rd or 4th option if the search gets that far. But we could see some coaching changes in the A10.
