Minutes Next Season

So what’s the real reason we don’t play Va Tech and UVA in basketball?

shows what an athletic big man can do in the middle, especially if he can play through contact

I agree Burton is our best prospect and he made good improvement from Frosh to Soph year. But I wonder how the return of everyone, including Sherod effects his development and stats this year. Last year with Francis, Gilyard, and Grant - I felt like Burton was our 4th option - even though at times he was probably our best or 2nd best player on the floor. With Gilyard and Grant returning - I think Burton is still option 3, and the biggest unknown is Sherod. I am not a believer that Sherod is returning to play 15 minutes a night and be a reserve guy. I think he is a competitor, saw the opening with Francis leaving and sees a chance to step in - play 25-30 minutes a night and be close to what he was pre-injury.
So where does that leave Burton. I thought if no one returned - Burton would be a guy who might be looking at 35+ minutes, and 16 points and 6-8 rebounds a night. A first team all A10 guy and potential POY candidate if not next year, certainly his Senior year. But with all the guys returning - will Mooney continue that progression for him - meaning, set up plays for him, make him more a go to guy on offense, etc - or does he continue to be a guy who survives off plays created by Gilyard or break downs where he gets a chance to drive and show what he can do?
There are only so many shots and minutes to go around - and in all honesty - Burton might be our best player next year, but will the offense flow through him?

I think we run our offense and things happen, sometimes repetitively, but I don't think we run set plays for guys. so regardless of who came back, I don't think we'd run plays for Burton. but he'd likely have taken on a bigger offensive role naturally. now, I just hope he doesn't play passively.

That is my concern Spiderman. That Burton becomes that afterthought on our offense, even though he might be our best all around weapon in terms of being able to shoot from deep and also get to the basket and finish. I think initially - our offense is repetitive and fluid and looks for cuts and open man. But when it gets down to 12-10 seconds on the shot clock, it is almost always a ball screen with Gilyard that usually involves Grant.
Something that might be worth trying early on and I think we did it with Harper - is let Burton set the ball screen on Gilyard. Then he can either pop for a three or roll to basket and maybe post up a smaller guy if the other team switches.

Francis and his 14 shots per game going pro leaves a lot of room for other guys to get more chances. I think Burton will be the main benefactor of that increased opportunity
The difference with Francis is that he was a guy that once the ball was in his hands, he was looking for his own shot first. And in sharing some ball handling duties with Gilyard - he had the ball in his hands a lot more than Burton. So while 14 shots a game is open for grabs - its not as easy for Burton to get those looks. Similar to Justin Harper. I remember we ran a lot of screen and pop for Harper and then let him post up as well to give him touches and shots. I think the same should happen with Burton with even an isolation or two at the end of shot clock time and let him get to the rim.

and no one mentioned Crabtree if 100% healthy. I still think Connor if healthy is going to push
to be on floor.

if healthy he's certainly talented and athletic enough to play. I have no idea where though.

I just want to hear he's healthy.

Agree with thought on Crabtree. But given he basically missed all of last season - he seems like the perfect fit to come off the bench and provide some shooting and hopefully some scoring, something our bench severely lacked last season. I see Crabtree getting about 10 minutes a night, and if he catches fire and knocks down some shots - maybe extending to 15-20 depending on the situation.
In all honesty - I think the Crabtree injury last year really hurt us. We had a good starting 5 and even played well with injuries there. But our bench was bad all year long with little to no production and I think Crabtree had and will have a chance to make a significant impact there next season.

This is a great problem to have. We should be in good shape. I can’t wait.

In Sherod's full seasons - he averaged about 10 shots a night. Maybe a slight dip there to about 8-10. And then I think Burton and Gilyard get more looks as well.

One thing you can say about Francis is that he never got the “Mooney tight ass”. That kid kept playing with confidence the whole game.

I had no problem with Francis. Sometimes he took bad shots, but he had an attitude and swagger our team needed. I think Sherod brings some of that toughness to the table as well. And I would expect coming back from injury and sitting out, and then rehabbing - Sherod will be very motivated and will push that motivation onto others when needed.

Just goes to show you how mental the game is. We talk about measurables, and ooh and ahh over highlights, but a lot of how good these guys can be is mentality and between the ears. Guys like Gonzo, Kenny Atkinson, Geriot, Kendall Anthony were all missing some measurables, whether it be height or athleticism but were all big time winners. Long off season for Philly. Atlanta has been fun to watch. The entire playoffs have been expect the unexpected.

I know there are a lot of Philly fans on this board. Any chance the Sixers will trade Ben Simmons to the Spiders? I mean, he's not much older than most of our starters. He's an excellent passing big man. He probably needs to work on his confidence before returning to the pros. :)

There are some similarities. 1. Well established we have too many Philly guys in UR athletics. 2. we have be told to "Trust the Process" for a long time too but even longer in Richmond. If it wasn't the offseason we might even hear Mooney on the radio talk about the 76ers underachieving but without even a hint of irony.

PS too bad Deandre Hunter is injured for the Hawks I like him and they might be title favs right now if he wasn't.

Trae Young reminds me of a far more athletic KA the way he gets that floater off.

Meh, minimal effort...just plop the text into a template, add the music, and you're done. But gotta keep the hype train rolling somehow.
