Mens: Marist Game Thread @ RC: Sat 11/9 6pm ESPN+

Lastly AP technical. Yes, it was terrible timing and you can't do it at that point in the game. BUT, I love the emotion he showed not just on the play but other plays. It was cocky, it was demonstrative, it was emotive love that. He just need to be a tad bit more discretionary in how he employs it. Every team needs a guy who plays with an edge and maybe AP is that guy for us.

I hope Mooney's doesn't go overboard with how disappointed he was in the play that he tames that spirit. His comments in post game were really blunt, way more blunt than Mooney ever is in talking about a player performance.
there's no sugar coating it. it was one of the stupider things I've seen on a court.

he made a nice play and then totally offset it with a lack of self control. more than offset it. I expect a guy to make plays. I can't have you on the floor if when you make a play you ruin it with a taunting technical.

I like the look of his game. I like that he's excited out there. he hasn't played much. but technicals that cost the team can't be tolerated. i like how Mooney handled it. I don't think we'll see it again.

Are the per game +/- publicly available on EvanMiya?

The over reliance on small guards is hard to overcome. 1 is fine when you have a shot maker like KA, King, even Gilly when he wanted. But Hunt to me is not a shot maker in same vein, he's a nice player he can drive but he's maybe your 3rd option on good team. I did think Mooney made a couple good points postgame. One was Hunt has too many other responsbilities to also put the bulk of scoring on him. His other was basically calling out AP tech as unacceptable.

too hard to distract shooters, other team shoots with confidence or we get the flying dutchman out of position stuff, & too hard to create your own shot unless elite. I like Tyne, he's not there yet and as said above, it was not his best game. And if u r going to go small, u better have stronger defenders on wing to supplement and that has been a concern of many of us whether we do.

I'm not drawing a straight line from this...I think spider23 has alluded to it...but we've sucked since we went victory lap with the net cutting.
Per game +/- is available through the live stats feed that the @SpiderMBB account tweets before every game. I've found that they're only viewable on a computer, when I look at them on my app it doesn't show +/- for some reason. Here's the link for Marist, click on the "Home Stats" tab:

TY. +/- via live stats on PC is only place I've seen it too. i didn't realize u were still getting it there. That link will now self destruct as soon as Richmond bball staffers read this thread lol. maybe we should delete this instead! Interesting anlaytics there too. It rates Tanner and Graham (only 2 mins played) as worst defenders. Their stop %, the rate of defensive possessions where the opposing team did not score, were both 0.

there were also only 2.5 seconds on the shot clock at the time of the technical. Just terrible, no sugarcoating it.

Moon may want to dampen his criticism, since the technical saved him from Marist running the same late-clock inbounds that Dayton ran for a winning dunk a few seasons back. You know that was coming and we would be on here savaging the coaches for it.

Actually, Marist did run a quick out of bounds play (for some reason) and missed a quick shot. The clock reset to 20 after the T, but I guess they didn't realize that.

I agree. And lets be honest - that technical didn't lose the game for UR. It didn't help, but you could easily argue the game shouldn't have been that close to begin with. And even without that technical - Marist is taking the ball out of bounds under the hoop with 3 seconds on the shot clock. Maybe they score, maybe they don't. Not to mention - after shooting the technical free throws, they immediatley took a quick shot cause I don't think they knew the shot clock reset. So while it hurt us for sure, to hang the loss on one play like this - especially an emotional play is silly.

We don't know if it lost the game or not. No one said it definitely did, but you can't say it definitely didn't. They made both technical free throws. We cut it to 73-70 with 33 seconds left which could have been 71-70. But, the bottom line is it was an incredibly stupid play. There is no BUT about it, and no BUT that should follow that statement. It was an incredibly stupid play that should never be repeated again.

Tanner gives me Tyler Burton vibes on the defensive end. I don't think it's a lack of effort, I think he is not quick laterally, and not diligent enough in staying low and really concentrating on sliding and staying in front of his guy. He doesn't take it personally, like Dji and Tyler Harris and Bigelow did.

Really like the upside on the offensive end, but it's noticeable that we are worse on the defensive end when he's out there. And him and Dusan combining for 4 total rebounds is not gonna get it done. They have to do more defensively.

Based on just the 2 games I have seen, I agree with your assessment Kneepad. Hopefully it will get better, but you can't teach lateral quickness.

I totally agree it was stupid and if I were the coach - he would be severely punished internally (sprints, etc).

But I am the belief a game never comes to one play. Just like if that technical wasn't called and we won the game - I wouldn't say that block won the game for us.

Was that block and technical a big play, no - it was huge. Without the technical - we have the momentum going, lets say Marist inbounds and misses, we rebound and go down and score - the momentum is in our favor. But instead - we get a huge block, and then give away 2 points. So yes - terrible and stupid play, but had it not happened and we won the game - it would just masked bigger issues - like our inability to score against Marist for 5 minutes in the crucial part of the 2nd half, or our poor production overall from the center position, or our defense or lack there of allowing Marist to go 50% from deep.

Just one game - so they can comeback from this and I expect they will. I still stand by my prediction of UR going 11-2 in the OOC with them beating Auburn, but losing 2 other games. This is one of them.

You are the epitome of optimism. I hope Mooney and company delivers for you. I'll hang up and watch.

I was at the game. What worries me the most is the offense. Yeah, I know Marist (5 and 24) were hot from 3- I give them credit. Those 2 guys were the best shooters in the game. But our offense- from late first half and all second half- looked unorganized, unfocused- no one wanted to take a shot. We had two big men who were never posted low. It's early, and I hope Mooney finds a solid starting 5 and sticks with them at some point with reasonable subs.

I agree there are always lots of plays you can look at that decide wins and losses. But, there is a big difference in missed shots, giving up a rebound, a turnover, or other things that happen a lot and a stupid, lose your emotions technical foul that was such an obvious taunting call that every ref would always make that call. This wasn't even a tech where you say "And 1" or "come on, I didn't foul him". This was a stupid, what the F are you doing taunting tech that should never never happen.

Guys the tech saved UR from giving up a lob dunk on the inbounds or fouling a desperation 3 point attempt. Next level thinking by Moon to mind-control AP this way and prevent heat coming his way.

We were down 5 with 50 seconds left when he was hit with the Technical and Marist had the ball. The win probability before that play was over 90% for Marist. And the reality was much higher than that because we were not hot and Marist was hitting their FT's. Our fate was sealed regardless of the technical. Now, I do agree you can't have a technical in that point of the game but that play really didn't impact the L we were about to receive.

your talking probablity? it hurt our chances. it was a selfish action.
you commended him for showing emotion on that play. most of us are saying "no". it was a very poor choice.
but it's been taken care of and was a teaching moment. AP will be very good for us.

I was countering the notion that the technical somehow cost us the game.

It was a bad foul at a bad time. I wouldn't call it "selfish" it was an emotive reaction after he made a big play. If he would have done this in the first half against VCU at the Robins Center, the fans would love it, I suspect. Players taunt each other all of the time, it is part of the game, but you have to be a bit more discreet about it and obviously taunting in the last minute of the game when you are down is absolutely not the time to do it.

would anyone like to comment on the fact the UR - while down 7 or 5 points on multiple possessions - didn't take any 3s in the final minute until the last play of the game when it was already decided? Not sure how a team that supposedly has great shooters throughout planned to come back from 5 or 7 points down by taking the layups and fouling once Marist demonstrated that they could make FTs and that no progress was being made.

Three times UR took a 2 point attempt when down 5 or 7, including with 8 seconds left down 5 which is the most glaringly obvious spot where you cannot ever take anything but a 3. (The only exception to shooting 2s was the Tyne layup attempt after the steal when he was fouled - but even on that he had a chance for a 3 point play. The others were basically worthless wastes of time.)

I don't understand how this is ever a strategy once the other team hits FTs (Marist was 8-8 in final minute.)

Press, yes.
Go for steals, yes.
Foul, yes.
Shoot 2s after 2 FT makes with decreasing time on the clock - no.

I agree - upon seeing it live, I thought the opposing player said something or pushed him the way he reacted and basically made a point to get in his face.

Lets be honest as well - not the best place to be taunting an opposing player. Marist is up 5 at that point, you block their shot out of bounds and want to brag. If I am the Marist player - I just simply put to the scoreboard and ask Apostolos if he can read.

Now - you want to get emotional, get some high fives going, clapping, and get the crowd into it - thats a different story, but he basically went out of his way to get in the guys face. I also thought it was telling - after that technical - he did not go back into the game. Not that it might have helped much - but we needed 3's in that last minute, and Mooney would not put him back in.

It will be interesting to see if this play effects his playing time going forward.

pushed him? from his back on the floor?
AP blocked a 6'1" guy's shot. as he should. no, the guy didn't push AP or have time to say much.
1:09:00 here if you want to see it again. Richmond vs Marist

props for finding this and posting it. I had been wanting to see a replay since things that happen so quickly and unexpectedly like this can be hard to digest in real time. It was as bad and obvious as I remembered 🤦‍♂️

Hat tip to Walz for being on top of the situation and trying to get him under control but it was too late.

Not the guy on the floor, one of the other marist guys as they came to pick up their player.

But its clear from the video - he simply blocked his shot and walked over top of him to yell at him. As we have all stated - the dumbest play you could make by far at that point.

Lets see how much he plays against Charlotte.

Ok, yeah I was at the game I didn't see the play because I was on the opposite side of the court. But yeah, way too much. It is one thing to chirp at a guy after you make a big play. But jeez, he went in for seconds and then thirds after it. Discreet, AP, you need to be discreet if you are going to taunt. Whatever the opposite of discreet was is what he did.

hadn't really thought of that, but I hope it has no effect. it's in the past. it was a mistake but I think Mooney moves on.
I don't think this has any effect all. We need AP and for as much as he went back for seconds on his taunting, it's not like he threw punch or something similar that would impact his playing time moving forward. I'm sure the coaches chatted with him and probably more impactful were some of his teammates talking to him after the seeing that film.

Coach I reckon has a few meltdown minutes in the context of Charlotte himself
Lol. That meltdown was completely warranted. That call cost us the game, an A-10 tourney game. It is rare when you can say the official cost you the game, but that is the only UR game I can recall in my memory where you could legit say that.

My comments are:

1. The lineups were frickin nonsense. Taking out Tanner (our best 3-pt shooter) to put in Tyne, who was awful. Not having Roche in. If we are doing offense/defense, let's maybe do it right.

2. D-Lo driving to the basket and forcing up shots also doesn't work once the deficit is 5/6 and there's less than 30 seconds to go.

3. My worst play of the game (aside from the tech) was the possession where Marist was up 2 with about 1:30 left, and they were at the very end of the shot clock and in jail, and for some ungodly reason Tyne sloughed off of Pascarelli on the wing because the guy with the ball was driving his direction, and sure enough, kick to Pascarelli and bang. Dagger. Just terrible awareness, or if that is mandated by coaching (affect the drive and then try and recover), then terrible situational coaching. Peak Julius Johnson defense there. Over-help on the drive for no reason, then scramble too late to the dead-eye shooter having a monster game.

4. It was stated somewhere on here before, and I agree: we seem to be back to "can't stay in front, now we overhelp, and now we are doing the mad scramble recover defense with two guys running late at a shooter and now we are rebounding 3v5" defense. I flippin hate it.

I'm already at agitation level 8.9 and the season has barely started.

#1 Charlotte

#2 Hodges was fouled! 1994 caa semis. non call made by "you can't see Dick" Paparo. It can't really be compared to Charlotte, bc I expect odds would say Odu was still a small live favorite to win that game & were pretty good with Odell Hodge. The Hodges vs. Hodge battle. But it basically took our chance to win away and came at a crucial moment.

??? We pulled within 73-70 with 33 seconds left, which would have been 71-70 without the tech. Then, even if Marist hits both FTs, we can still tie with a 3. Or, only down 1 with 33 seconds left we could have waited longer to foul and maybe gotten another steal. Or, if we get a stop with 50 seconds left, Hunt's layup with 43 seconds left pulls us within 3, not 5, and then we don't even have to foul. To say our fate was sealed regardless? No way, especially considering there have been games where we have comeback from 5 or more down with 50 seconds or less left.

funny you mention that dagger 3 pointer - in real time, I was wondering how tf the guy just held the ball up top until 9s on the shot clock and a guy 1 pass away on the wing - with no other screening action or anything to free him up - was wiiiiide open. I honestly don't even remember the ball handler driving, I thought he just saw a guy open because we were hedging early and had sloughed off that guy, and that guy caught the ball and drilled the 3. Maybe Pascarelli was dribbling but I don't recall a drive and kick. Agree, was horrible defense.

If sman has acceess to the clip as well, would like to review this one as well.

That call was talked about in a lot of national sports media the next day, it was bad enough to make national news

This link should take you right to the start of that play, and you were correct there was no drive required 😳:

It shouldn't, and he has played well for us so far. BUT - we have seen guys get in the doghouse with Mooney before, so we will see. I agree it shouldn't - and don't think it will. But if he plays 10 or less minutes tonight vs. Charlotte - then we know something is happening.

thank you. Tyne's positioning is not terrible but it's Pascarelli, their best player so we should not be hedging off him regardless. Reminds me of when the guy from Davidson got hot 2-3 years ago at the RC and we weren't picking him up 40 feet from the hoop.

Another note on this play that speaks to a larger item often discussed here: when you have sub 6 foot guards, they don't cause much of an issue on close-outs on shooters. Shooters still have their eye line intact and no danger of their shot getting blocked.
