Mens: Marist Game Thread @ RC: Sat 11/9 6pm ESPN+

My comments are:

1. The lineups were frickin nonsense. Taking out Tanner (our best 3-pt shooter) to put in Tyne, who was awful. Not having Roche in. If we are doing offense/defense, let's maybe do it right.

2. D-Lo driving to the basket and forcing up shots also doesn't work once the deficit is 5/6 and there's less than 30 seconds to go.

3. My worst play of the game (aside from the tech) was the possession where Marist was up 2 with about 1:30 left, and they were at the very end of the shot clock and in jail, and for some ungodly reason Tyne sloughed off of Pascarelli on the wing because the guy with the ball was driving his direction, and sure enough, kick to Pascarelli and bang. Dagger. Just terrible awareness, or if that is mandated by coaching (affect the drive and then try and recover), then terrible situational coaching. Peak Julius Johnson defense there. Over-help on the drive for no reason, then scramble too late to the dead-eye shooter having a monster game.

4. It was stated somewhere on here before, and I agree: we seem to be back to "can't stay in front, now we overhelp, and now we are doing the mad scramble recover defense with two guys running late at a shooter and now we are rebounding 3v5" defense. I flippin hate it.

I'm already at agitation level 8.9 and the season has barely started.
Pascarelli was on fire in the second half. Why didn't the Spiders put a taller guard on him-man to man-no switch?

??? We pulled within 73-70 with 33 seconds left, which would have been 71-70 without the tech. Then, even if Marist hits both FTs, we can still tie with a 3. Or, only down 1 with 33 seconds left we could have waited longer to foul and maybe gotten another steal. Or, if we get a stop with 50 seconds left, Hunt's layup with 43 seconds left pulls us within 3, not 5, and then we don't even have to foul. To say our fate was sealed regardless? No way, especially considering there have been games where we have comeback from 5 or more down with 50 seconds or less left.
Ok true, our fate was not sealed. But I was there people were already getting up to leave. Yeah, of course some miracle could have happened but it certainly didn't feel that way. We were trading baskets with them, they were making their free throws. Also, they still had the ball with a couple seconds on the clock if the T isn't called so they certainly could have made a bucket themselves anyway.

This made me laugh. Julius Johnson perfected the Flying Dutchman. It is my lasting memory of his time with us.

Who? We don’t have a taller guard. That’s 1 of the issues. I guess GW is a little bigger but he’s not really in rotation right now. Tanner not a guard defensively & analytics said he was our worst defender that game if u put much stock into those things. We don’t have guys like Goose and Dji on roster who gave us flexibility to defend both guards and bigger wings.

Dumb non winning play but yes we were real long shot regardless. Anyone acting like that was a defining play in result is just a cover for Mooney & how we played. We were probably upper 80% to lose b4 the T and our chances declined another 5% roughly. Only an estimation. But places like espn (tho I have zero belief in espn stats) do track those things real time. So technically it hurt of course but minimally.

You can track these things on ESPN's gamecast.

Marist was 66% to win with a minute and change, but then 81% after the Pascarelli 3 pointer.
That presumably went up after UR did not score on their ensuing possession, so figure probably 85-90% Marist at that point.
After the 2 technical FTs they were 97% to win.

So figure the lack of a stop and the points added by a technical added between 5-10 percent win probability to Marist, but they were already in the range of winning 85% or more. So it was more of a nail in the coffin to the previous possessions that really were the big plays that had more emphasis on the likely outcome of the game - the Pascarelli 3 and the UR empty possession (Tyne missed on a drive.)

maybe I'm missing the point. I don't think we were winning that game without the T. I guess it's possible, but unlikely.
I just see it as something I don't want any of our players to do even in a 20 point win. it's putting "me" infront of "we".
don't hurt the team. don't ruin a good play with a bad one. it wasn't even borderline. that's getting a T every single time.

It all depends on how you look at it. If that T didn't happen, and we ended up coming back and winning - are the majority of mesages on the board saying - what a gritty, tough win the Spiders pulled off; way to come from behind; way to not give up, etc.

Or are they saying - lucky to get away with a win, lot to work on. Didn't look good, stole a victory there. etc.

my thoughts exactly, I don't know who on our roster is going to fulfill that role this season? Somebody needs to grow into it quickly though because contrary to what we were assured in the offseason it looks like other teams have guards with size that can shoot.

Your probably right. All they have is Roche at 6 ft 5 and Tanner and 6 ft 6.

we could try that. but if either of those guys were on Pascarelli he would have been up top with ball as iso or P&R. Then he's the one driving to rim or kicking to the other 3 ball shooter. It's early but looks like a roster flaw. we may need to mix up defenses more.

This is transitive, I know. But we all know Marist lost to Harvard by 13 before they played us. Well, fortunately, Harvard usually has a solid squad so maybe Harvard is good this year, you may tell yourself.

Except, after beating Marist by 13, Harvard went out and lost to Navy (5) and American (12) their next 2 games. THarvard was American only win of the season those far, American lost to Siena and LaSalle. Harvard was also Navy's only win having lost to St. Joes and Rider.

So, if you are looking at this list of teams and saying so what, the only thing you can draw is that they are all a put of shit team from low major conferences and all this tells me is that our 7 point loss to Marist looks even worse now.

Hopefully, we beat Charlotte and right the ship tonight.

doesn't have to be a taller guard. just somone who stays near a guy like Pascarielli. my biggest long time criticism of our defense is that we overhelp off of the wrong guys.
Yep, Pascarelli is maybe 6'3. Maybe. He made 5 3s and only 2 2s. If our small guards can't guard a 6'3 (maybe) 3 point guy, it's gonna be a terrible year. Hopefully, we correct some of the mistakes we made and get a lot better. Guard size had nothing to do with the Marist game.

I remember like it was yesterday, it took a while to get over it!
I drove past Rock Hill on my way from Charleston to Charlotte today - if you are going to be at the game, give me a way - will be in Section 103 / Seat G which I think is fairly closely behind Spiders bench
