Mooney pushing to expand NCAA tournament

Big debate going on right now with the NCAA saying most sports should have ~25% of their teams advance to the NCAA tournament. Mooney's clearly in the pro-expansion camp.

Don't sleep on Roche

From his Richmond bio

  • offered by Missouri, Pittsburgh, Kansas State, St. Bonaventure, and San Diego
  • Southern Conference Rookie of the Year
  • 110 three-pointers ranked ninth in Division I and first among freshmen
  • Ranked third in Southern Conference and 39th in Division I in three-point FG pct, at 39.7
To this, I also add that he shot 90.9% FT

Only one or two of our other players could get a similar offer list. If he can play defense well enough to be offered by SEC, ACC, and Big 12 schools, he can be fine in the A10.

While there is a legitimate argument for Bigelow or perhaps others, I think Roche fits perfectly in our starting lineup. He, Burton, and Quinn provide lots of offense. Gustavson will defend the other team's best player, and won't be counted on to take many shots in part due to Roche's presence in the lineup.

Indoor facility for field sports

We have a wonderful new indoor facility for our baseball team, A wonderful practice facility for our basketball teams,
It’s time that we have an indoor facility for football, both lacrosse teams, field hockey and soccer. A facility that is designed
to give all of these sports an Indoor place to practice. The uniqueness of the different sports will have to be addressed, but
every coach would love to bring their team inside for practice.

8-23

This is where the rubber meets the road. Kenpom predicts a one point loss. Road game against a mediocre Davidson team. Mooney has been very good against daddy Mckillop over the years. Time to continue against the son. Loyer is a bit like like Girard from Syracuse, little guy, not overly athletic (has some quicks and guile), and can hurt you if you don't play good D on him. Girard really gave it to Nelson. I am asking Nelson to step up this game and keep Loyer in check, and this is a game we can win, and need to win to break this home W, road L pattern. Lets get a 71-69 win.

At-large NCAA bid

I need some help from SFSpidur and others who can honestly analyze the situation. We are what we are at this point in the season. It sucks, and we should be much better. We all know where (or with whom) the problem lies whether we are willing to admit it or not. But for this thread, he who must not be named should not be mentioned here. Here there is no debating our 3-5 record. It happened, and it is a fact.

What I need to know is do we have a mathematical chance to make the NCAAs if we go undefeated the rest of the way. I'm not looking for whether we have a realistic shot. I think we know that answer. I want to know if it is possible if we don't lose another game all season until the A10 finals.

I would imagine it is still slimly possible, but given we have a very bad loss, no good wins, and not too many chances left to get good wins, I would imagine it is narrowing in on 0 even if we win out until the A10 finals. Please give me your analysis from a factual standpoint.

I support my Spiders with everything I know. And I will be there cheering them on if we are 0-11 IF we are still playing for a chance at a bid. So, please help me evaluate when/if we are eliminated. I would love to see an update on our chances after each game.

Pitt Field renovations

Hardt's email today mentions some upgrades coming to Pitt Field for next year. I know fundraising for this has been going on for many years, so it's great to see it at least partly come to fruition.

I'm a little confused on how much is going to be added though...it mentions indoor batting cages, so is this the full stadium rebuild planned as part of the Elevate campaign, or only a portion of it? I thought it was supposed to be all one building with press box, concessions, restrooms, batting cages, grandstands, etc. But the only thing they specifically mention besides the separate outfield seating area is the batting cages.

"We can’t wait to unveil...enhancements to Pitt Field, including indoor batting cages and additional outfield seating."

Richmond 75 Duquesne 73 - Roche Caps Unlikely Comeback!

one post game summary called this one a "stunner" and it sure was...usually these types of comebacks come against the Spiders and end badly...tonight Richmond made Duquesne the victim!

there were dozens of key plays in the 22 point comeback, but check out the amateur video (there was a lot of pandemonium in the stands) of the two plays that finally put away the Dukes...Jason Nelson recovers a loose ball on a busted play and gets it to Roche who had missed five threes in a row...this time nothing but net for the win...

Ha! I don't know about Roche, or you guys, but 60 years ago in my backyard I made that same shot numerous times...of course I was only being guarded by my shadow!

Then there was the dramatic defensive stop...enjoy the way Bigelow goes after and rips down the rebound...his emotion, energy and aggression along with Quinn and Burton in the second half really turned things around on both ends of the court...

not sure what this remarkable win means...you won't be successful coming back from 22 down but once every 18 years...just ask Coach Mooney, it's reportedly his biggest comeback win at UR...but right now I'm not going to worry about consistency...as they say, I'm going to enjoy the moment...we beat a competitive team for the second game in a row...that's a first for this season...

Go Spiders!

Richmond 82 Drake 52 - Spiders Dominate Bulldogs

when we left for the game today The Sheriff muttered that she thought we were in for a very long day...the struggling start to the season had hammered down lofty hopes and expectations to ground level...we entered the Robins Center just hoping for a little progress since W&M...the Spiders shocked us again...this time in a good way!

if you weren't able to see the game these amateur clips from the second half will give you an idea of what the Spiders did to keep the Bulldogs on the mat for the entire game on both ends of the court...energy, aggression and execution we hadn't seen so far this season enabled the Spiders to bury Drake at the beginning and you know what?...we never let up...

UR ended the game on a 22-10 run after the Bulldogs only run of the 2nd half...

and how about Neal Quinn?...whatever T.J. Cline helped him with it sure worked today...that was a performance that he can build on...Quinn set the tone inside for UR in the opening minutes and the Spiders went on to dominate the Bulldogs in the paint all afternoon...

now that we've seen what the Spiders can be, our expectations have been raised again...obviously the next challenge is sustaining and building on today as a team...the schedule would appear to give us a good chance to further strengthen our game before the A-10 season begins after Christmas...

Go Spiders!

Even easier to get into VCU

Remember a friend from my Spider days who flunked out of Richmond and drove over to then RPI. He applied and was accepted the next day. Now many who applied have been told they were accepted even though no final decision has been made.. Everyone makes mistakes but a "reasonable" person would think there would be some system of confirming the validity of an email about acceptance before the "send" button was hit.

Richmond 73 George Washington 63 - Enjoy the Zen of Tyler Burton

forget about all the frustrations of the season so far and take a free minute to enjoy this gift from Tyler Burton early in last night's 2nd half...smooth as silk comes to mind...

arguably the Spiders best win over a team not named Drake...the offense was consistent throughout the game...when the defense showed in the 2nd half they gradually wore down the Colonials...and we made 9/10 FTs in the final 3 minutes to finish strong...maybe a first step towards consistency?

I don't believe we have beaten two competitive teams in a row this season...Duquesne seems to be a team that could be in the battle for a top tier A-10 finish...another strong Spiders performance and win would be very encouraging...

Go Spiders!

Randolph

Its been mentioned by a few on here on other threads. Really liking what I am seeing so far. I did not have very high expectations this season, due to the numbers at guard/wing positions. Likely benefitting some minutes due to Crab being out. So far looks like a guy with high confidence to shoot the ball (and the more I watch hoops, the more I feel like that is a bigger factor in shooting than gets credit), scrap on defense, make things happen. Brings an energy to the game. Between Randolph, Dji and Roche, I have a really high confidence level in the guys coming off the bench. All three seem ready to go and make an impact as soon as they come in the game, and I feel like all three are going to make something good happen. Good problem to have.

Mason Thread - A-10 Opener

Below is some information for our A-10 opener against George Mason

Opponent: George Mason (8-5) --> Preseason 6th in A-10

The Patriots fizzled out after an 11–7 (4–1 A-10) start, going just 3–9 in February and March in Kim English’s first season as head coach. But Mason wasn’t far away from having quite the first year under English: That 3–9 finish featured 10 games decided by seven points or less and four overtime affairs. English’s team has the pieces to get over the hump this season and compete for a postseason bid, bringing back the outstanding duo of skilled big Josh Oduro and do-it-all forward Davonte “Ticket” Gaines and adding some top talent. Tennessee transfer Victor Bailey Jr. has scored everywhere he has been, touted freshman wing Justyn Fernandez has a game-ready body and Virginia Tech transfer Ginika Ojiako gives George Mason the interior enforcer it lacked a year ago. If Saquan Singleton can solidify the point guard spot, this team could compete for a top-four finish.

Key Player:

Victor Bailey

  • PPG: 13.0 (Leads team)
  • 3PT Percentage: 46.5% (Leads team)
  • FT Percentage: 81.5% (Leads starters)
Mason is going to be a tough team to beat in conference this year, though they don't have a true star. Bailey is strong, particularly from 3, but he struggles inside the arc. Particularly, this team is weak at the line, especially their big man, Oduro. I think restricting them to shooting inside the arc will do well for us, as they are going to be tough

Balance

Against Coppin State there were eight players who scored while six of them had 8 points or more.
Each game there seems to be a double digit scorer who did not score in double digits the previous
game. This means we have more scoring threats and this will make scouting us more difficult. All
starters have had double digit nights and two bench players have.
