2023 Richmond Spiders Football - Prologue - North Carolina A&T

the struggling Aggies look like a perfect opponent for a team that has to win a football game…they’re 0-3 in the CAA and have been outscored in their three losses by a combined score of 85-23!

they have extreme difficulty scoring and passing the ball against CAA opponents, averaging around 55 yards per game through the air and around 12 points per game…

Coach Vincent Brown has a young squad that is learning what it takes to win in A&T’s first season in the CAA…they have to win their first CAA game some time!…let's hope it doesn't come together against us!

what could possibly go wrong?...the Aggies look and sound a lot like Morgan State and Hampton on paper…we weren’t ready for the Bears, or the Pirates, and we paid the price…that’s why we’re in the jam we’re in now…

the Spiders have played much better the last two games and seem to be in an upward trajectory…what happened earlier in the season won’t matter if we’re ready to focus and execute

after Saturday I wish the Aggies a lot of luck getting that first CAA win…the game finishes the Spiders run through teams projected to finish 10th, 13th, 14th and 15th in the CAA preseason poll…

an impressive win would be the perfect warm up for what could be two giant and fun games at The Brick House!

Enjoy the Prologue

2022-23 G League

I've been putting a few things about Grant and Gilly in their summer league thread, but seems like we might need a central place to discuss all of our guys playing in the G League. In addition to those two, I see SDJ is once again on the training camp roster for the Motor City Cruise, while Blake is back with the Capital City Go-Go. If anybody knows what TJ is up to, give us an update!

Time to Shine, Noyes

JOC piece on Noyes and expectations of a bigger role this year. Some quotes from him.

“Tyler’s my guy. I didn’t want to see him go, but he’s got to do what’s best for him,” said Noyes. “In terms of my time being here, I feel like this is going to be a big year. I’ve been putting a ton of work into my game and my body. I really feel like I’m ready to make that next big jump here at Richmond.
“So I’m really excited and I’m ready to go.”

“I was very confident going into that game because I’m very confident in my ability and I’ve never really not had confidence in myself,” said Noyes, who converted four of his seven 3-point shots last season. “But going out there (at Saint Joseph’s) and doing pretty well showed me that I belong out there and I can be successful out there.” [...]

“It’s not exactly a simple system the way we run things here,” Noyes said. “So I think for me it took a little bit longer just to kind of get used to the flow of how we do things, specifically on offense.”

“I definitely would not say this is a rebuilding year,” said Noyes. “We’ve got a lot of guys that have played a lot of years of college basketball. I think in the weeks that we’ve played together, I feel like we’ve jelled really well together and I really like the pieces that we’ve added.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what this team can do.”

Jovan Milicevic - 2024 Offer

Verbal Commits calls him a 6'8" SF, but his Twitter profile says he's 6'10". Serbian kid from Toronto playing in Phoenix.

P6 offers from UCLA, Oregon, Arizona State, and Oklahoma State, plus a bunch of other schools. All of those big-time offers were from 2021 and 2022, more recent ones have been lower level.

Quality of A10 next year

There are a bunch of way too early top 25 preseason rankings out that also included honorable mentions. Most of these I don't believe completely factor in the transfer portal or NBA draft yet. Currently the top half of the A10 looks very strong. Dayton in predicted as a top 20 team in most polls and honorable mentions, which I assume are top 40/50, have included Saint Louis, Loyola Chicago, VCU and Davidson. If the A10 is actually that strong it could see 3 or 5 teams make the NCAA.

So what does this mean for U of R? It is difficult to predict because we have so many new players competing for minutes. I am very bullish on all three transfers and would not be surprised if at least 2 were starting by conference play. Transfer success is much easier to predict than high school recruits. The big unknown are last year's freshman, which was a strong recruiting year. Some of these guys could be surprising good and already know our system.

I feel pretty good about this team and give us a 75% chance of being in the top 100, 60% chance of making either the NIT or NCAA and a 25% of making the NCAA. If Burton can take it to another level, Quinn puts up numbers like last year, Roche shoots 40% from 3s, Bigelow shoots 3s like he did his freshman year and a couple of the rising sophomore or other members of the team step it up, we have a small chance at having a top 25 team.

Scrimmage

Quite a few schools are doing inter squad scrimmages for the viewing public. Would love to see Spiders do like a Red- Blue
scrimmage since we are pretty deep at positions and would have ability to mix and match combinations. Could be used as
some type of fund raiser. Would allow fans to see bench players ability that you may not see much once the season starts.

2023 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponent's Countdown - Rhode Island

in another incredible anomaly of the CAA scheduling software the Spiders and Rams have not met since 2015...I was a lot younger then, and Richmond was finishing up a dominant run of 16 wins in 18 games since 1991...the Rams were a struggling program and had been for years...

Rhode Island Coach Jim Fleming finally found the secret to success in Kingston and has built a program that many feel can battle for the CAA Championship...the Rams have finished 7-4 the last two seasons and some feel were the final team left out of last season's FCS Playoff at-large selections...

both teams have a lot of football to play before they meet on October 14 but it's very conceivable that both squads could come into the game 3-0 in the CAA...before the showdown each plays Stony Brook and Maine...the Rams have Villanova in their other game and the Spiders Hampton...

coaches, players and fans could have a much better idea of how far their team can go in the Championship battle after this one...whoever wins it has the very valuable road win over a probable Championship contending team...that's good for their confidence, second half momentum, Championship chances and At-large portfolio...

the Spiders need to be at their best for this one!

enjoy the Countdown!

Tracy Woodson Out as UR Baseball Coach - Mik Aoki Hired

WOW - the school announces they are not renewing Tracy Woodson’s contract and will begin a national search for a new head coach.

As I think many of us agreed, this program needed a major shakeup and hopefully we can get back on track to being nationally relevant. Really interested to see who we end up bringing in, and if there's any chance of retaining Jordan Jaffe coming off a breakout freshman season.

2023 Richmond Spiders Football - Prologue - Maine

I think it was Yogi who said when you get to the fork in the road take it...seems like the Spiders may be at that fork...sitting at 2-3 after five games will we take the path of the ill fated 2018 squad which finished 4-7, or the 2021 Spiders who finished 6-5?

so far we've shown no signs of turning the corner towards playing better football...last Saturday's game against Hampton was reminiscent of 2018's game five, a demoralizing 63-10 loss to JMU...2021's game five was in the midst of a skid which grew to five losses in a row before we won our last four...

it won't be easy against the Black Bears...Coach Huesman challenged the offense and defense this week...he called Maine the best 1-4 team in the country and repeated several times that our only chance to win was to rush the ball effectively on offense and stop the Bears rushing game on the defensive side...this will take a complete turnaround from our effort versus Hampton...

I read we are the favorite...if you've watched the same UR games I have this season, that's baffling!

I enjoy The Spider Gang's pregame fellowship and camaraderie as much as anybody, but it sure is better, if the team has a chance to win...maybe the turnaround starts this week, but I've been saying that for a while!

enjoy the relaxing Prologue...

the Black Bears have growled loudly at The Brick House several times since 2010...they've won three out of four played on our home turf...

they've clearly got good mojo but you have to believe this game represents the Spiders chance to finish their march through the predicted bottom three squads in the CAA this season with another solid win...I expect 3-0 is where we'll need to be at the end of this stretch to keep pace in the Championship battle...

in contrast to the Spiders schedule Maine opens with these four games before traveling south to Richmond...at FBS Florida International...at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State...Rhode Island...at William and Mary...brutal, murderous, pick your own adjective...

ha! by the time they get to The Brick House they'll be well seasoned and could be anything from searching for their first win, to a proven Championship contender...

the Bears have good mojo at The Brick House...I expect we'll need to be ready either way!

enjoy the Countdown...

2023 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponent's Countdown - Morgan State

the MEAC Bears serve as this year's opponent for the home opener...unless I overlooked it the Spiders have never lost to a MEAC squad...to top that I don't think we have lost a home opener since UMass in 2005...I guess we learned a home opener lesson against the Minutemen: don't play a Top 20 ranked FCS opponent in your home opener!

Morgan State seems to be rebuilding again, but can play with nothing to lose and plenty to prove. They could be dangerous, however, on paper the Spiders seem to have more of every tangible measure. This is what we expected when we scheduled the Bears. I'd expect UR to be a significant double digit favorite.

I'll be looking to see if the Spiders will show The Brick House that they'll be playing eleven games this season to prove that last season's near Championship and FCS Playoff appearance were not a fluke. If the Spiders play hard, and execute well, this one should go just as the schedulers expected, a big win to start the season.

Enjoy the Countdown. The dog days shall pass!
