Nice little piece on him, apologies if already posted.

Rebounding. Toughness. Defense. Energy. Offense.

He is bringing a little bit of everything now. He talks about practicing all summer the shots he knows he will get in the games. His intensity and rebounding have really set the tone in a bunch of games. Really playing at a high level. I think a key is just keeping this intensity up. It seems like Bigs and Dji have taken a physical beating in a lot of games, and look a little gimpy at times - but power through.

Richmond 77 George Mason 70 - King Puts Down Pats!

selected highlights from last night's big win over the Patriots...wow! did Jordan King go off...Coach Mooney said in his postgame remarks that King may have played the best game by a Spider that he'd seen...Mooney also said he believed King was the best Portal player he'd seen so far in the A-10...the King's first half flurry of threes was pretty incredible and some of it is featured in the highlights...it was a memorable moment when Skinn finally waved the white flag and called the TO!

the 2nd half was different and the big run by the Patriots wasn't unexpected...as some have already mentioned, in the past we've seen the Spiders often go into "playing not to lose mode" instead of continuing to play with the aggression that produced the lead...this team kept taking the ball to the hoop and ultimately it protected and sealed the win with an outstanding 19/21 from the FT line...

I'm not too superstitious, but starting with Charlotte this is the 4th consecutive game in which we have had the lead and held on to win in the final minutes...four games doesn't make a season, but it certainly suggests a positive trend that's one of the reasons fans like this team so much...so far they're a group that makes the plays necessary to win in the final minutes...

enjoy the highlights...I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen on Tuesday in Pittsburgh...

Walz - noticeable improvement

Much like I didn't see Harris's role this year - I was wrong, I love his current role as a switchable piece on defense, who can give selective points on offense - the same is true for Walz. I didn't see much last year, little offense, too many turnovers, but he has really surprised me in a positive way this season. One of the things I like the most is that he does not shy away from physical play, and seems to relish the 1 v 1 matchups in the paint. I thought his post defense was light years better than Quinn's last night, Walz refused to get backed down like they were doing to Quinn. And when they dunked on a switch, Walz came down and made a very nice shot in the post to answer.

I am on record as thinking redshirts from season start are a waste in the era of the portal, but with Soulis's injury issues and the way the team's rotation is going, I don't see a role for Soulis this year, so I hope he does take the medical redshirt if available. Would space he and Walz out nicely in the classes too and allow him additional development time, especially to get stronger.

Great job by Walz to work on his game and improve and great job by the staff to instill that mentality as part of his development, as well as giving him a clearly defined role this year. He doesn't (much) have the Moon quick hook this season, and is empowered to try post moves and look for open 3s at the top of the key. That was something I had not seen at all last year, as well as his TO issues last year, still a work in progress, but better there too.

how would you seed JMU hoops in March if they go undefeated???

yes, they really could go undefeated! the best NET team in their next 3 games is 334(!). the combined record of the teams in their remaining schedule is 49-122 (28.7%). they only play one team (Appy St ... twice) with a winning record for the rest of the season.

absolutely horrible schedule, but if they're like 32-0 they're getting a home game in the tournament, right?

Team identity

Mentioned this in SBU game thread but this was first time I felt like I could see this team’s potential identity - one which could carry forwad to a possible top 4 spot. Previously, it seemed like Moon was still mixing and matching lineups hoping for both sides of the ball to click but I really liked the high-intensity defensive mindset, mixed with timely scoring, even if it sacrifices time for better shooters, namely Noyes and Roche. I think this team is - and should - forge an identity hanging their hat on defense and basically saying if we score 70, we will win bc the goal is always to hold other team to 65 and below.

I think this can be the team’s identity - just getting after it on defense on the perimeter and being a very switchable team, other than Quinn. Schmidt mentioned in postgame comments that SBU had trouble as out small guards got into them and they had difficulty getting past them and then didn’t make good decisions when they did (partly bc our guys gave great help.) It seemed like our guys were everywhere in passing lanes. And I think when more depth returns to health we can utilize a full court press some as well and not worry about guard fouls at all.

I was not high on what Harris could give us this year but I was mistaken - he is a key cog in this rotation and identity, and Dji and Bigelow just need to keep doing what they are doing. They’ve been outstanding. Quinn just needs to get his arms up and contest without fouling when guarding straight up and just use his height to challenge attempts on switches. He’s not a monster shot blocker so shouldn’t try for that every time.

One thing - if this is a developing identity, UR must be better at the FT line. There will always be close games in defensive struggles, and missed FTs can have a huge impact on momentum and results - those are free points UR will need. And UR has not been very good at the line this year.

Richmond 65 St. Bonaventure 54 - Were You Expecting That?

I certainly wasn't...after two lethargic performances against outmanned opponents I didn't know what to expect against the red hot Bonnies who had just demolished the Rams down on Broad Street...after all, St. Bonaventure's tough, physical style of play had given the Spiders fits for years...

but the team apparently hit the reset and refresh button during their bye week...the energy, toughness and execution yesterday was more than the Bonnies could handle as the Spiders played chest to chest defense and made the hustle plays necessary to win on both ends of the court...

what can you say about Isaiah Bigelow except wow!...long time Spiders fans surely noticed how badly he wanted every missed shot on both ends of the court...technique is important, but quite often rebounds are decided by who wants it the most...Bigelow wanted it yesterday from the opening tap...

still struggling from three point range, it was impressive to see the Spiders take the ball to the basket to win this one inside....Dji Bailey took a physical pounding, but never stopped attacking the rim along with Bigelow, Quinn, Walz and King...when the game was still on the line in the final minutes the Spiders showed their mental toughness too...after struggling at the FT line earlier in the game King, Bailey and Bigelow made 11/12 FTs in the final minutes to seal the win....well done!

now, was this a one off afternoon, or can the Spiders take it to Chicago and break through on the road?...

2023 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponent's Countdown - North Carolina A&T

the Aggies aren't like the other CAA newcomers...they have a long storied history of football success...they've appeared in the FCS playoffs five times...during the Rod Broadway era they won four Celebration Bowls in five seasons (2015-2019)...and more importantly they brought in a new coach who knows what it takes to win in the CAA, Vincent Brown...

Brown worked at Richmond for former UR Coach Mike London and with current Head Coach Russ Huesman during the 2008 National Championship season and the following 2009 season...the last four seasons Brown has helped London build W&M into a CAA Champion...

on CAA Media Day Coach Brown sounded like a confident and optimistic man when he spoke of his team as knowing how to win...A&T finished 2nd in the Big South last year at 7-4...Brown says his staff will focus on identifying his player's strengths and figuring out how to leverage those...the CAA Media poll predicts a 10th place finish for the Aggies

NC A&T lost a lot from the 2022 squad through graduation and the Transfer Portal...Brown likes his incoming freshman and the players he picked up from the Portal...he's looking for a QB and RB to rebuild his offense and is returning only three starters on the defensive side...

I expect Truist Stadium in Greensboro to provide NC A&T a significant home field advantage...and the Brown led Aggies to over achieve, especially at home...anything can happen for both teams between now and October 21, but the Spiders better be ready for a battle...

enjoy the Countdown...

OT: FSU suing ACC

FSU continuing its temper-tantrum mode by suing the ACC claiming the $130M exit fee that IT AGREED to is illegal. First it was upset at the NCAA, now the ACC. A clear case of "I didn't get my way, so now I'm pissed off at everyone and am going to act like a child."

Hey FSU: Your QB got hurt. It sucks for you, but that's life. Suing the ACC isn't changing that. If he didn't get hurt, you would be in the playoff and this lawsuit wouldn't be happening.
