The competition thread

It's nice to track how our opponents are doing, but I wouldn't fret too much over their results the first week of the year. We just need to take care of our business.

The A-10 is not a one-bid league, especially with the extra at-large this season.

Certainly not in panic mode yet, but the OOC schedule is where your conference strength is determined, and it's a short one this year so opportunities are limited.

SF 61 UVA 60. SF 13-28 from 3, UVA 3 -13. No reason for UVA to only shoot 13 3s. You will run into teams that get hot and make 3s, and you better be able to at least come close to countering that. Hard to do when you only shoot 13 of them.

This is in the competition thread because we are competing with all these mid majors for bids. Hopefully, SF loses a lot and won't be on the bubble because this is a great win for them.

Yes, the Mitchell kid from MD is a force inside, but Hack a shaq is a good strategy against him, he is not even close on FT's.

Wednesday he had a free throw that hit the bottom of the backboard, so far right that it wasn’t even close to hitting the rim. He was shook after that and clanged the second free throw

You can get open threes against UVA’s defense but you have to make them. Giving up the three is the one weakness of the pack line defense. Because of this I’m always surprised the Hokies don’t fare better than they do against uva because they have been a very good three point shooting team the last several years.

WCC showing how it's done. Gonzaga of course, but St. Mary's taking out UNI, USF taking down UVA. Conference is 9-2 so far. A-10 is 3-6.

Western Kentucky looks to be the best mid major team this year. Watching their game right now and they would absolutely work Richmond. WKU is gonna make a deep run in the NCAA’s this year, calling it right now.

Seeing Virginia lose today was awesome...

GooMoos lose to Belmont, La Salle loses to St. Peter's (yuck), and of course Kansas pounded St. Joe's. I'm finding myself really having to root for VCU tonight.

And who was it, PhillySpider? touting the LaSalle coach 2 years ago- Villanova tree, going to turn things around, blah blah, gets his ass handed to him by Saint Peters, LOL. Hate to be calling out all the pretenders tonight, but low hanging fruit. Let's go UR and SDSU!!!

RPI is completely meaningless now.
Certainly not completely meaningless. In the absence of any NET ratings so far, RPI is one of the closest proxies we have.

Last year, the A-10 finished the season 8th in conference NET. Guess where they finished in conference RPI? Yep, 8th.

Again, it's early, so we're by no means locked in, but the data so far is not good.

Nice win for SLU, and doubly so with it being against Wade and LSU. GooMoos handled Howard minus Maker. Now let's see URI get a win against South Florida.

A-10 jumps to 7th in conference RPI. :D

Solid start for A10, I feel like this could be one of strongest seasons in the last 10.
Couple of nice wins, but I'm going to need to see a lot more before I believe this is going to be a great year for the conference as a whole. Small data set so far, but SLU looks solid as expected, VCU looks improved, and then what? I expect we'll be good but need to show it against good competition, while URI has disappointed so far.

The middle/lower tiers need to be better if the conference is going to be viewed as strong. La Salle can't be losing to St. Peter's, GW has to take care of Navy, Davidson shouldn't be struggling with High Point, GMU shouldn't need a 6-0 run to nip a D-II school by a single point, etc.

VCU looked pretty decent but I am not sure what to make of the teams in that tourney. Utah State got killed even worse by South Dakota State than by VCU, then turned around and beat UNI by 11. Seemed like everyone had a head-scratcher and at least one good game there.

I think they were all just evenly matched...look at KenPom ratings:

67. W. Kentucky
69. VCU
73. St. Mary's
83. S. Dakota St.
85. Northern Iowa
86. Utah State

Whole bunch of solid mid-majors at that event, plus WVU (and Memphis will argue they're not mid-major). Was just too bad for us that UNI came out on the short end of the stick.

You want to see a real hard nosed basketball team that is trending in the right direction and extremely well coached? Look no further than Virginia Tech. What you think about that win tonight 4700?

This probably will be the case, but I'm not sure we can really measure them by KenPom yet -- they've only played each other. Anyway, just was odd three wide back and forth from one game to the next there. VCU looked better than I expected them to, but I think they caught a couple teams unprepared for their defense.

KenPom is currently very heavily weighted toward preseason ratings, so it will definitely be interesting to see how things shake out for this group over the course of the season.

I watched the first half, and Tech looked really good - especially on defense. The feed I had was very interesting - I think ESPN3? - it was an overhead camera angle and you could see most of the half court, and no announcers. I really enjoyed it. But you could see Tech's team and individual defense was just superb, and matched up athletically very well with Nova.

while URI has disappointed so far.
I wouldn't really say this. They played no. 18 ASU right down to the wire. This with almost total roster turnover. They did bring in some high profile transfers - and with no scrimmages, etc was expected to take them a bit to gel. I do think they showed a lot more dynamic offensive ability than last year. WIth that said, I don't have full confidence in Cox to reel in Fatts and form a cohesive unit with the rest of the guys. THought VCU looks better.

Yep, good couple days for us. A-10 was 5-0, and Morehead State and Furman picked up wins. Hofstra did lose to Rutgers today, but no surprise there.

One thing that just occurred to me about our schedule that I had to double-check on was whether we can actually schedule another game to replace Detroit Mercy, due to the way MTE participation expands the max number of allowed games. Fortunately, it looks like we're okay. Here are the formulas for max number of games:

- 24 regular-season games and up to three games in one MTE
- 25 regular-season games and up to two games in one MTE
- 25 regular-season games without playing in a MTE

(A subsequent waiver by the NCAA is now allowing teams to participate in two MTEs as long as they still max at 27 games.)

We had a Scenario #1 schedule of 24 games plus a three-game MTE, but with the Detroit cancelation, we're now at 24 plus a two-game MTE, so we're free to schedule a new game against anybody and still qualify for the 27-game max under Scenario #2.

I noticed Fatts didn’t start for URI and came off the bench today. Wonder what that’s about

I wasn't able to watch the game, but the box score shows he started.

That’s odd, espn app shows he came off the bench. But it also shows two “starters” played 8 and 7 minutes without foul trouble. So it may be putting the ending lineup in there instead

Yeah, that's an ESPN error. The play-by-play shows he scored the first points of the game 40 seconds in.
