The competition thread

This whole thing is so strange. My deacs have cancelled all games for a month. Why are the rules different for some?

Play in the day just in case someone might test positive in the evening? Also, could fit into both teams schedules better since it would give them extra time before their next games?

Someone help me understand all these daytime games, because I'm not getting it.
I would think daytime games are occurring for a couple of reasons.

1. No fans are allowed, so you don't have to worry about attendance
2. Daytime games allow for teams to travel back same day without spending the night. Believe this was one of the stated reasons for the Wofford game being at 2.
3. TV, we were able to work out a deal with the CBS local for the Wofford game to be on TV. Probably much easier to do in the daytime vs. evening time slots. Particularly for quickly scheduled games that don't already have a TV commitment.

Thanks, I can buy some of those. Just seemed odd to me that when you can’t get people in the arena you’d wouldn’t at least want to show games on tv at night to monetize things a little better somehow. It’s not just us doing this, so I guess some of these reasons must apply everywhere.

The game was on channel 6.3, which is available OTA digital, and is probably in most cable packages but not in the "normal" listings. When I had FiOS the alternate local channels were buried in the 400s and I hardly ever looked below 500 since that's where the HD channels started.

Anyway, I doubt they'd make much of a stink about pre-empting reruns of "I Dream of Jeannie" or whatever is usually on those alternate channels in the evening.

Your probably right. I think my first two reasons are probably larger factors than the TV angle. They are just doing it whenever it is most convenient for the both teams, I suspect, which is apparently in the afternoon.

I think you're onto something with the travel. Teams probably want to avoid hotel stays if they can.
I doubt the Panthers are returning to Cedar Falls tonight, but it's certainly possible.

Why wouldn't they? Our guys always fly home right after games, don't they? Game wraps at 8, heading to the airport around 9, and landing in Iowa around 11 Eastern, which is 10 Central.

Harder for teams making long bus trips obviously.

Yeah, I was thinking the earlier tip helps - but if they fly charter, I guess it doesn't really matter.

This is bringing back nightmares about bus rides to UNH. :)

URI not taking advantage of the opportunity against Wisconsin...down 20. Fatts is 3-for-11, but the whole team can't find the bottom of the net. Team is 0-for-8 from three.

Furman was down 14 to Cinci early in the second half and fought almost all the way back but couldn't quite get there in the final minute.

I don't know anyone who had Furman +4. Nope.

My grandfather always swore that bourbon was a cure all for anything that ails you. I've been trying but somehow my immunity has not yet responded. Oh well, back to testing out that theory.
It’s called a BLT.......brown liquor treatment

UNI was airborne at 9:30 last night and landed in Iowa at 10:47 Central.

SDSU dominated Bobby Hurley, and made him quit like he was coach K.

Hurley's team was out played. out cultured, out defended, and just plain beat - despite there four future NBA players.

Watching a lot of hoops and this crazy covid year, I would not be shocked to see a UR vs SDSU championship game.
Like SDSU and Dayton last year, I could very well see UR and SDSU being fixtures in the top 10 this year. Dutcher and SDSU have a culture of playing defense and sharing the ball. Lost a great 2 guard, and an NBA first rounder PG in the back court. Was totally expecting a step back this year, and not as good but already two top 25 wins. 60 year old Dutcher does not settle for down years apparently. We lose a dominant back court next year, hope we can replicate.
I think we win at Wva, wide open field this year. Hopefully we can complete the season and finish strong.

SDSU +4 was my most confident play of the season so far. I think it was down to 2 by tipoff.

They are really fun to watch. You picked a good 2nd-favorite team. They lost what...3 starters from last season, including a first rounder? And still so good.

Yes, Broc - they lost Malachi Flynn - first rounder, KJ Feagin - good guard playing overseas now, and Yanni Wetzell - playing overseas. Yanni was a 6'9 version of Terry Connelly. But they did bring back a starter that was out much of the year, big man Nathan Mensah who had a double double in the first half. He has the same condition that knocked Chris Bosh out of the NBA, so hoping he can stay healthy and have a career. You are welcome I didn't bet the game and jinx you :).

If we can knock out WVA this weekend, my new Spider23 Top 25:

1. Gonzaga
2. Baylor
3. RIchmond
4. SDSU
5. Who cares
6................

VCU has canceled their game against Louisiana scheduled for next Friday because they had too many games on their schedule thanks to the last-minute trip to Sioux Falls to start the season.

Too many as in more than allowed? I assume not, in which case it's probably dumb to bed cancelling games before you know how many might be cancelled by covid. If they lose out on odu this weekend for some reason they might regret it.

They had more than the allotment..had to cancel 1.

Yes, they were one over. I'm sure they waited in case there were other cancelations, but they certainly have to give Louisiana some notice of cancelation to give them a chance to find another game.

I assume Cajuns not Tigers...
Yes.

GW craps the bed again, losing to Delaware...the game was there for the taking, but both teams really struggled to score for the last 15 minutes of the game.

At least UMass rolled by Northeastern behind 31 and 11 from Mitchell and Davidson destroyed Georgia Southern.

1-2 ND goes on a 19-0 run and was up 33-9 at UK. UK will be lucky to win 10 games this year. Our win means nothing other than it getting us ranked at this point.

Scary situation in the Florida-Florida State game as Gator Kevyntae Johnson collapsed and is now in critical but stable condition at a hospital. They say he had COVID earlier. Myocarditis is an occasional after-effect. Hoping he makes a full recovery. This also could have impacts on the season for everyone moving forward.
