Drake 11/20

I agree with starting Wilson over Sherod, I think that he will get better and better. But, once again, Wilson should not be on the floor during critical win/lose time. His bad decisions with the ball during crunch time were a significant factor in both losses. This is not a function of him being a bad player, but inexperience (poise) is biting him in the butt. The mistakes have been very costly. This on Mooney.

We’ve had much worse losses recently. Hofstra? La Salle?
Recovering right now in the airport bar in Des Moines. This hurt bad but convinced we were the better team today and wasn’t sure if that was going to be the case after the 1st two games ... seriously thought there was a chance we might get blown out. This afternoon the pain is worse given the last 5 min but no reason this team still can’t go 9-3 and non conference as we enter the league play against possibly the weakest overall a10 in a decade.

Both of these teams looked like bubble teams in the first half. Overall, I thought it was pretty good basketball.

But, as we have seen for 17-years, Mooney coached teams do not close well. Mooney tightens up, makes bad decisions (or no decisions at all), and his teams don't do what needs to be done when it counts the most. This has been the case consistently throughout his tenure.

As we have grown accustomed to, each year brings new hope that this season will be the breakthrough. Sure, there are plenty of games left in this season, and the team COULD go on a 23-3 tear before they win the A-10 tourney and the auto bid, but those of us who have seen Mooney coached teams for years know that it isn't going to happen.

After today, I see only 1 team likely to make the NCAA tournament. They have Drake on their jerseys.

It was a tricky tack technical but definitely a technical per the rulebook. I don’t think it’s why we lost.
There were other contributing factors but in person the arena was as quiet as is was all game before the technical and was loud as heck after it. And wasn’t it a 12-0 run after the technical too ?

Certainly momentum is a real thing, all I’m saying is that getting a technical didn’t suddenly make us a bad basketball team.

Taking out Grant was more impactful. Reality is they only walked away with 2 points after the T but we took out the best player of the second half.

Drake tried it's best to give this game to the Spiders in the final minute. They missed 3-4 free throws that should have sealed the win. It is very difficult to win close games (and call yourself a good team) if you can't find a way to turn gifts to your advantage.

Yes, I’d blame that on Mooney, not on the T. Coach isn’t obligated to pull the player.

There were a lot of bigger reasons why we couldn’t pull the W. Poor free throw shooting, lot of missed layups, bad rebounding at critical junctures. I just don’t lay it at the feet of the technical as the primary problem.

Yes. Guys (and ladies) that arrived on campus when Grant did have been paying into their 401k for a couple years now. Time to grow up.
This is a really bad take. That stare down / light trash talk happens on nearly every play; I can’t think of another time Grant got a T for taunting.
If anything, it’s frustrating how Grant always looks like he’s buddies with the opposing team.
His game looks as good as ever this year. Shooting a high percentage, making great passes and playing adequate defense.

Phenomenal. His efforts will yield zero NCAA bids and a several-year playing career in Europe like a couple handfuls of other Spider basketball players over the last decade.

Ha fair enough, but I think the comment about him needing to grow up is unjust and unfair.

Agree that A-10 looks exceptionally weak

Don't know what you've been watching through the years but he has whined and complained to the refs for years. Just not a good look for someone of his talent.
That’s true. But I haven’t seen him taunt a player / get called for a technical for it in the past.

Those losses were upsetting because they were upsets. Happens to every team. We shouldn’t have lost this game, and really could derail the season.
Pretty sure you mentioned in another post that the Spiders were going on a 9 game winning streak. Nice job! At least they covered.

Mooney can't make foul shots or layups for us.

I also wanted Grant in the game at the end. but we complain on here that there are no consequences for guys who do things like that, or play bad defense. this time Mooney enforces consequences and we complain.

I like Wilson and think he's good defensively. I'm still not sold on his scoring. Penn beat him badly a few times down the stretch but Penn is a nice player. Wilson needed some help there.

not sure how much a healthy Dji would have played, but I think we missed him today.

Cayo is hustling and I'm sure he's more upset with his season so far than any of us.

Burton was just phenomenal. Grant was very good. but this game reminded me way too much right from the start of the Utah State game. the difference between us looking amazing and not is simply making shots. in both losses we're missing a stupid number of 2 points shots ... and foul shots. we're supposed to be this awesome offensive machine. our defense was serviceable. we have to score at a higher clip.

I checked the score on my phone as the game progressed. I checked the box score. So Matt Grace only took one shot? I wonder was it tough D on him, or something else?

His one bucket was a pump fake from 3 that the defender bit on. Then Grace drove to the bucket and scored.

I have to say I lost my mind. I thought it was the best and most impressive move I’ve ever seen him make. Grant liked it because he did it on the same defender a few minutes later

Agree to disagree.
I thought he played well, his poor timing on the emotional outburst was not good but the fire is. So a guy gets a technical and he needs to ‘grow up’?…....come on.
