Georgia State 11/16

Through three games...our three-point shooting for guys who've taken at least five shots:

Burton 64.3%
Grace 60.0%
Golden 54.5%
Sherod 36.8%
Gilyard 28.6%
Crabtree 20.0%
Wilson 20.0%

Grace and Golden have as many made threes as Gilyard does.

And, what is also impressive is we have guys who have made 9, 7, 6, 6, and 6 threes so far. It is important to have multiple guys be able to knock down the 3 so you can spread the floor a little. The more guys you have knocking these down, the more open looks everyone gets.

Continuing on the Cayo conversation, weird to be typing this, but I cannot figure out his role with how this offense or team composition is coming together through 3 games. His defense is generally fine but not spectacular whereby he has to be on the floor. He has looked out of sync with offensive flow so far, mostly because he is a one dimensional offensive player. His other teammates are finding a lot more open shots through ball movement rather than relying on back to the basket posting up from NC on the blocks. He doesn't stretch the floor and guys like Burton (6'7"), Crabtree (6'6") and Bailey (6'5") are very athletic, can shoot the ball but also slash like Cayo (also 6'7") can without sacrificing a lot of height or strength.

All this to say - maybe a whole lot of nothing and Cayo has a completely different type of game coming up. Opinion may be clouded because everything looked good last night as the guys shot the ball so well, but I preferred the offensive spacing and general game flow with Cayo resting last night (shrug).
I think there will be plenty of games this year where we need Nate to take his guy down low, and get some buckets for us. We won't shoot 16-29 from 3 every game. Certain teams and defenses will defend our 3s better and take things away. Nate will be just fine, but we don't need to find 25+ minutes for him if we are shooting well and the bench is performing like they did last night.

Five double figure scorers is a winning hand. Plenty of kudos to dish out. Mentioning two of those - glad to see Sherod nail some threes. Admire him for the tenacity of coming back from two ACL tears. Good to see we could do well without Gilyard having to be a primary scorer. He does many things well. His shots tonight 0-4 were not falling but that was okay because of others scoring and not forcing him to throw up lots of shots. Also he played 29 instead of 40 minutes which is good for him to have some rest and less pressure. Enjoyable romp over Georgia State.

does anybody know when the last time we had 3 player make four 3’s in a game was?

I don't know the last time it happened, but it happened in March 2002 against Duquesne when we set our team record of 18 threes in a game...Reggie Brown had 5, while Ungerer and Myers had four each. (Skrocki had three.)

Edit: Yeah, that's the last time it happened. Don't know how many times (if any) it happened before that.

Too lazy to look it up but we made a ton of threes against Mason in the CAA tournament play-in game one year. Maybe '97? I think Baker had eight and we had at least 16 as a team, possibly more.

The Spiders tied a record for 3s in a game against St Mary College in 2021. https://richmondspiders.com/news/20...oint-record-in-win-over-st-marys-college.aspx
Just to keep from confusing myself...
That tied a home record...
Duquesne in March 2002 was away...
And 1997 CAA Tourney was Neutral...
We scored 85 in 1997 & 93 in 1996 in consecutive GMU play-in games, so could have been either year?

My stats get a little fuzzy before Nov 2012, and even more so before Nov 2001...

Looks like it was the '96 game that Baker was 8 for 11 from three. But our media guide shows the Duquesne game as our only one with 18 threes.

Definitely did not expect to see a lead of 32 points in the game. Was a little disappointed in the last 4 minutes when things really started to break down, but obviously it didn’t really matter. Seems to be that the garbage time substitutions could be better managed to me, but obviously that is a minor gripe.

The best news is that Mooney is making adjustments that haven’t been seen in quite awhile like a “typical starter” coming off the bench and Gilly coming out of the game multiple times and getting less than 30 minutes of playing time. Watching the post game show, Nick responded just like I thought he would with “I will do whatever is best for the team” and so I hope we see more of him as either a 6th man or as a post player. Sure he “could” play the 2, but that is not the best option.

Other positives were Wilson scoring the ball and getting to double digits and watching Dji show what he can do. It was also fun to watch SpiderDad and SpiderMom giving the phone cameras a workout

Hopefully some of the hot shooting carries over to Saturday and the D continues to improve. It was fun to watch Coach Joseph get animated trying to get more improvement out of the D.

Looking forward to Saturday.

Go Spiders!

Impressive by Burton early on. I personally don't like his new 3 point stroke. It has way too high of an arc. Yeah, if you are Steph Curry, you can do that arc, because Steph is Steph. I don't see that as sustainable.

Grace and Golden are obviously not going to shoot that great either but they both have good strokes, Grace in particular. Golden is doing really well at picking his spots as he did last year.

Gilly is continuing his shooting slump from last year, again his stroke looks too good for that to continue to be that low forever.

Georgia State had like 6 guys out with COVID issues. One positive and the rest unvaccinated, and they weren’t allowed to travel.
