Coaching incompetence

maybe JOC should run Mooney's interviews through Chat and just print that.
Is Mooney chat GTP? It has to be frustrating for JOC (and others) to interview him because he pretty much just recycles the same 10-15 talking points that he has used for the past 20 years. Much like his coaching, his talking about his coaching remains stale, boring, and completely predictable.

There's got to be an enterprising coder somewhere in our midst who could dump the audio from Mooney's last 5-10 years of postgame and weekly pressers into AI and create a predictive rundown of future press conference jargon. Like you said, it's so predictable. Maybe the AI-bot isn't even necessary at all!

Welcome to Richmond MENS basketball
CM realized from the start that this was going to be a weak team, even with Hunt.
So, he and Hardt, maybe Quealy and others, sat down and proceeded to make plans on how we
can make the most of the NIL moving forward.
They knew the haters would do their belly aching, which a lot of you have done.

This hypothesis is based on what? Would love to know.

Sorry to see you go, but I get why. Those who try to save a drowning man often get hurt in the process.

Why isn’t this on CM? Why doesn’t he play to the players strengths instead of continuing to jam the square pegs into round holes? He must have seen some strength in each player to have recruited them. When does CM accept accountability?

Don’t go away Annap. We want as much input on this board as we can get.

If he punted intentionally on the season, as Annap seems to indicate, really crappy thing to do to Hunt and Roche, Walz, whole team. As have stated many times, and it does not take Annap to figure this out - Mooney has spoken to his genius approach of playing the long game and focusing on HS recruits. Genius in that it seemingly just buys him more time. Not so genius in that he has not had a lot of success with HS recruiting lately, and if he did happen to hit some home runs - likely to be scooped in the portal. Just saw an article with Pitino talking exact opposite - says you can't win big focusing on HS recruits. I know, he has a billionaire NIL guy, but we do too.

The stupid extension allowed him to redshirt. U think if he had 2 years left on contract after this year that he was going to give the 2 frosh the option to redshirt? Nope. Because there would have been some mild pressure. We allow unprecedented patience & Moon more than willing to take it.

Moon wanted them to redshirt. Helps with even more job security. Made up excuse on why this season tough but moreso do a reset, yet another, market #nextbestclass, catch lightning in a bottle w a large class maybe 3 years from now (where all the media will slobber over his great coaching ignoring the rest) & Mooney is very confident will stick together 4-5 years now because it’s all of a sudden going to go back to that.

Maybe the 20 year coach should be able to field a better team than one that he knows is horrible from the start then?

As usual fall back to the old faithful, "it's the fans that are the problem for expecting to win!!"

And I don't know why you are tucking tail and running off to find the bunker, the only thing you care about is that Chris Mooney is the coach so you are getting exactly what you want. No need for tantrums little guy.

I have not seen a forum that is totally positive re Mooney and Richmond basketball. Please enlighten me, I would like to see what I'm missing.

Article in RTD today on CM - subtitle is “Mooney considered adjusting Richmond’s approach; he didn’t”. The article goes on to show Mooney reinforcing that.

Of course he didn’t change. I’ve used the term “quicksand” once before to describe Mooney and his willingness to adapt or change. And here we are again. 20 years of pretty much the same. As the quoted post above mentions, we play the system always regardless of skills or lack of to play his system. Defense and rebounding choice that burn us repeatedly also come to mind. And there are system failures. But bet your ass that the system will be intact next year regardless of players on roster and regardless of winning or losing.

I'm not buying this "long-game" theory at all.

if anything, I think Money misjudged our talent and thought we'd be much better than we are. the other A10 coaches knew better with their preseason ranking though.

if he punted on the season, he'd have moved on from the seniors like B Artis, Roche and Dusan a long time ago. he'd have played GW3 before he got hurt. more Tanner, Soulis and Beagle. but he didn't. he's trying to win now, not develop for next year.

and I don't have a problem with that. I'd always play who I think gives us the best chance to win. I'd never throw in the towel.

saying he redshirted guys to play the long game while riding seniors is some conspiracy theory that just doesn't make any sense.

Utah just fired their coach at 15 and 12. In 4 seasons 65-62. Had defeated Kansas and Kansas State this year. The AD said they have higher aspirations and a change is needed to get there. Compare that to Queally and Hardt who perpetuate our situation.

I'm certain he meant the the other non-basketball forums just on this board. Don't worry URfan1 nobody is cheating on you! But if there r other sites, please share those details immediately, even tho I'll never go to them of course.

what do u mean here? We were picked 7th. Nothing to be very excited about but it's not super low either. Not sure they knew any better.

&...once again...Mooney will underperform relative to preseason expectations. Very common.

my mistake. thought we were picked lower. just checked and Blue Ribbon had us 8th too.

for a change, preseason polls were very accurate.
A10 preason poll was:
1) VCU
2) Dayton
3) SJU
4) SLU
5) LUC
6) GMU

current standings has the same 6 teams.

then got it terribly wrong starting with drumroll...your Richmond Spiders!

But my preseason poll was the most accurate....VCU...and then everyone else.

Also last night Mooney said Shulga said was best player in the league. Idk if he wins A10 POY but fwiw. There were ppl this spring & summer on here saying why would Shulga put them over the top? lol.

Shula being great isn't a surprise. he was 1st team all-conference last year, and preseason 1st all conference this year.
despite all they brought back, I was hoping the polls were wrong and they wouldn't be ahead of SLU or Dayton. didn't think they had enough frontcourt ... but not sure that matters when you have enough backcourt.

I think VCU does finally lose a lot this coming offseason: Shulga, Bamisile, Jackson, ets ...
but I'm sure they'll fill the holes and somehow be good again.

Agreed, their frontcourt is still very suspect but their backcourt putting up huge numbers. We'll see how they do against bigger teams in the tourney, but it's clearly enough to have them in the driver's seat in this league.

Shulga is a quality player. Does a lot of good things and is clutch.

VCU will reload on players. If Mike R moves on, they’ll find yet another quality coach who will continue to own CM.
