2019 Roster As of 2/6/19

At one time there was a strict rule in place concerning the percent of athletes compared to the entire student population. I wonder if adjustments were made when LAX was added. And if not, could that have reduced the number for football.

I think the concern over roster numbers is being greatly overstated. The rule change to allow freshman to participate in four games without losing eligibility benefits us greatly. In years past, the freshman class could not be given game action or they would lose a year of eligibility which Rocco was famous for doing. Now all freshman can contribute in some way for up to four games and still redshirt. They are also receiving more time with individual drills, scout team reps and coaching instruction due to smaller numbers. Huesman gave almost the entire freshman class game action last year to expose them to FCS football which should benefit them this year and in the future. Walk-ons are beneficial but UR will never have a high number like large state schools simply due to the size of the student body and the lack of interest in athletics by most students which is evident based on their attendance.
A major factor against walk-ons attending Richmond is the cost. They can walk-on at JMU or W & M, for example and pay in state tuition. Most families aren’t going to pay $50,000 for their son to walk-on and
“possibly” play football. It just doesn’t usually work that way.
