2019 Roster As of 2/6/19

RH and staff are going hard after several transfers on both sides of the ball. I expect a few more to commit in the next few weeks. OL, TE, LB, QB all being courted at this time.

These guys appear to have the fight to try. Nice change from the hardwood.

Younger roundball bro at ‘Cuse and now WR Brissett a Cav.ACC family.Thought Dejon wanted to finish college ball close to home.

I64 plays Tribe,ODU,Liberty in 2019.Brissett should put up big numbers in those games.

Wasn’t there a rumor of Cincy before Illinois? Weird set of events. But whatever, hope he does well. Would have rather seen him at UR but wasn’t in the cards. Hoping a young guy can take advantage of the reps.

UVA may lose all 3 of those games.

We signed a couple of linemen. I think we are going to have at least 10 linemen this year. We need one big rb to get the 3rd and 2 4th and 1 carries.

Roster size as of today! Curious because I would say we need 85 to have any shot of a good season. Depending on how the season starts out with not having major injuries we could surprise some people.

And we need our primary RB's to stay healthy. It seems like we lose 1 or 2 RB's every year before the season even starts.

+1. I sent russ an email yesterday and asked him to consider using #13 ben maffe at fullback, even shifting out of the slot on short yardage. this is a talented kid that's not been used in the O to his potential

I don't think our fans realize that we have Title 9 limitations. We are limited to the numbers on our football team relative to the number of female athletes competing.
It would be nice to have more women athletes competing but their squads are usually not as large as the men's squads. Of course one solution would be to add another women's sport but that would be very expensive & probably not well received by the university just to add more football numbers. My guess is that we can go to the high 80-'s with the current division between men & women participants.

The only women’s sport that would probably make a difference in the numbers would be softball. I’m not sure how expensive that would be. But I have heard it mentioned several times as a possibility.

women's crew, the studies they did when considering saving men's soccer and track and field showed the costs were minimal, just a few upgrades to the existing facility. Women's track and field carries a number of women to even out the participants

Yes - and Ive heard that we have been cutting women’s sports budgets. Which has made it harder to carry full rosters.

This is an AD issue - or so I’ve heard

Where did you see this, or better yet, where did you get this information? I certainly haven’t heard it, or seen it.

Heard from a reasonably reliable alumnus that is actively involved. Comment was that dollars have been cut from assistant coaches & recruiting budgets in several women’s sports and that they were having hard time keeping numbers up (numbers are always hard). As to why funding is limited, purely speculation, but there’s certainly no shortage of comments on a different forum.

If that is true, and impacting numbers for football, I view that squarely as an AD issue. There are “ifs” in there so it could not be accurate, but it’s concerning from my perspective.

That’s very interesting and a far departure from past practice. I knew several players that took masters classes. Why does it seem our school seems hellbent on making things more difficult?

Back to numbers 85-90 sounds great

I'm hoping between 90 & 95

83 now unless I miscounted. Are there blind freshman walkons at camp who we just haven't listed on roster because school has not started? Not sure how else we'd get any higher.

Over half the roster are freshmen. Wow. That’s a young group.

RH has his work cut out for him. That being said, make the playoffs this year and the future is really bright.

I have never understood the argument that the lack of walk-ons makes it tougher for Richmond to compete. How many programs have walk-ons that make a huge impact? If walk ons are having to make an impact, then that means the 56 guys that you have missed on several of the scholarship players. If we do well with our scholarship kids then we will be fine.

Well at every least, walkons can be scout team players and maybe keep our backups from getting banged up.

Greg Lilly walked on, and wound up conference Offensive Player of the Year and in the Spider Hall of Fame.

Those examples are few and far between. But as Rick alluded to, having a hungry scout team has a huge impact on preparation, even if you can't "see" it on Saturdays.

I think the concern over roster numbers is being greatly overstated. The rule change to allow freshman to participate in four games without losing eligibility benefits us greatly. In years past, the freshman class could not be given game action or they would lose a year of eligibility which Rocco was famous for doing. Now all freshman can contribute in some way for up to four games and still redshirt. They are also receiving more time with individual drills, scout team reps and coaching instruction due to smaller numbers. Huesman gave almost the entire freshman class game action last year to expose them to FCS football which should benefit them this year and in the future. Walk-ons are beneficial but UR will never have a high number like large state schools simply due to the size of the student body and the lack of interest in athletics by most students which is evident based on their attendance.

The middle linebacker and left tackle of our national championship team were both walk-ons, no? Patrick Weldon and Michal Silva? I may be wrong on Silva but i'm sure that one of those lineman was a walk-on.

I don't think anyone is expecting us to match state schools given the tuition challenge but what about privates like Furman, Elon, Villanova? They all have a lot more than us. I think fair to ask why. Also from comments on here some made it seem like more numbers were expected per the coaches.

I'd think we could get 85 minimum. Because you can split 63 ships among 85. So I don't think we're talking just pure walk-ons either. Plenty of kids across FCS get small partial ship then get more as they prove themselves. Sure we have to give out a lot of full ships, but you can split some and use financial aid. Even if a kid is getting some form of ship that can sway a recruit. Clawson proved that.

The 4 game redshirt rule is great, but other schools use it the same way we do.

It is definitely harder at Richmond - and there are also title ix regs too unfortunately - but we're not out on an island with those challenges either. 82 just seems low. If you ask the coaches if they would prefer 10 more guys or 10 less guys who get more reps and attention in practice I'm confident they'll go with the 10 more.

We can get it done but margins are much slimmer with recruiting.

Check the roster number for that National Championship Team. It's not always how many players you have but more importantly do you have the right ones and they avoid injuries.

87

I’d list right ones (good recruiting) and injuries ahead of a little larger roster too but I don’t think latter is inconsequential.

I remembered this article from end of last year. I doubt Huesman concerns have changed yet here we are. Less concerned with the state schools JOC mentions but wondering how some of the peer privates do it in similar environment.

But if we win national championship again in next few years all is good!
