The competition thread

Yikes, now Sarr has fouled out with just 2 points. Three Wildcats have fouled out and still 4 minutes to go. UK just got its first field goal in about 9 minutes.

Has Cal simply tried calling a timeout? I’ve been told that is a guaranteed victory!

Did they call timeouts? You can't lose a big lead if you call timeouts, right?
Don't be silly. It's not the timeout that fixes anything. It's the adjustments that are made during the timeout that stems the tide, whether it's tactical, personnel or attitude adjustments. Mooney appears to do none of those. He likes to save them all so he can do his infamous offensive/defensive substitutions at end of game after we give up the big lead.

A-10 is 5–1 against the SEC so far this year...we beat UK and Vandy, Dayton beat Ole Miss and Miss St, and SLU beat LSU. Only loss is St. Joe's to Auburn.

Looks like two more shots at the SEC after accounting for the VCU/LSU cancelation...St. Joe's at Tennessee tomorrow (gonna go out on a limb and say the Hawks don't pull that one out) and Davidson hosts Vandy on Tuesday (good shot at another win there).

I still think Mooney gets a bonus at the end of the season for unused timeouts...

Fletcher was crying on the bench at the end of the UNC game, upset that he only played 2 minutes even as it seemed like half the Wildcats had fouled out.

Apparently there's no crying in basketball either!! Big Blue Nation is crying right along with him.

We are just wrecking teams' futures this year. Took down UK and they have gone to crap since then. Beat UNI and they cancelled the rest of their OOC schedule. Beat Vandy and Sarah Fuller transferred to North Texas. Look out, A10...

How deep do problems run at UK?
Tucker: Pretty damn deep. Off to the program's worst start in almost 100 years, the Wildcats are in full-blown meltdown mode. None of the players wanted to speak to the media after Saturday's loss to North Carolina, so injured sophomore Keion Brooks did it. Not a great sign. And sources close to the program indicate Calipari is currently in a power struggle with multiple other key players on this roster.

Can they turn it around?
Tucker: The hunch here is no. Lose Saturday at rival Louisville and the season is close to officially being a wash, and Calipari knows it. For the first time since the 2013 NIT season, and just the second time in his dozen years at Kentucky, he's losing the battle to stamp out ego and create a cohesive team out of a bunch of former five-star recruits. There might be more departures, and Calipari might welcome that at this point.

Mason trailed VMI for pretty much all of the first 25 minutes and then had to hang on at the very end to win it. VMI was down three with a chance to tie as the clock ran down, but missed and had to foul. Two shots for Mason to push the lead to 5 and the VMI got a three at the buzzer.

UMass is down 10 to Bryant with 11 minutes to play...the lead was as big as 17 a few minutes ago.

And St. Joe's is going to get slaughtered by Tennessee tonight.

The UMass hype machine was out of control. I hope they win, but they sort of deserve this.

GW does it again. Led for the first 25 minutes against Charlotte but ultimately lost by a point. Now 1–6 with their only win being over Coppin State.

VCU saw a 21-point lead against JMU evaporate, but held on to win by one. They had a four-point lead on the final possession and for whatever reason managed to foul Hodge on his three attempt as time expired. The bucket didn’t go, so he just got the three foul shots.

Wow, I have been pooh poohing Davidson all season, but the results are there, and they have battled some good teams close in losses.

I feel like we have owned them for a few years in a row now, hopefully this is not the outlier.

Davidson is a bit of a head-scratcher so far. Lost to Texas by two, fell to Providence by one, handled Rhody, blew out Vandy. And yet they lost by double digits to a bad Charlotte team.

Davidson has McKillop. Imagine what he would do with our starting 5.
Isn't part of being a good coach getting a good starting 5? Charlotte says hi. See, losses like that happen to other teams too.

yes & mckillop has them w much more regularity than we do here. Not this year but let’s see what Mckillop does w lesser team in a week. Don’t think u want to compare Mooney to McKillop at all. We controlled Davidson last year which makes that game even more worrisome. The odds that Mooney keeps it up over McKillop have to be low. Hope not that’s a huge game for us or could go south quickly.

Davidson isn't starting their best class ever that was picked to win the league. Mooney is.

mckillop has 2 NCAAs in A10 in 6 years. Mooney has 2 in 15. Mckillop has even finished 1st in A10 something mooney has never done. We won’t even get into his dominance in Southern league. And it’s done at school w less resources & more academic restrictions. Mckillop is nearing end of career but has been 1 of the best coaches in our game.

I agree w u B that McKillop would have this team running like a freight train.

Most coaches could do better with our talent than Mooney does. I gave Mooney a pass last year because it seemed that Hardt lit a fire under his ass and he learned the game of basketball, you know rebounding, toughness- shit like that.

I'm concerned that he has slipped back. Please don't lose emphasis on rebounding and toughness. Please don't coach players away from being tough. Is that happening to Cayo?

Too bad McKilliop can't figure out how to beat Mooney. We have beaten them 6 of the last 8 times. Kind of strange to wish we had a coach who we are having our way with lately.

We swept them 3 of the last 4 years.

Yep never said otherwise. And before that Mckillop won 3 out of 4. I only pointed out last year doing well bc it was a year that mattered. H2H means little at Richmond. If it did mooney wouldn’t be employed w his record vs. VCU.

I don’t think there is anyone associated with college basketball that would legitimately rank Mooney ahead of McKillop as a coach.

GooMoos maintained just enough separation to put away winless Towson, while SLU surprisingly struggled with UMKC for a half before figuring things out. They looked pretty disjointed in the first half.

McKillop's defense has looked worse than ours the last four years, at least against us. At some point I'm sure it will turn the other way again, but we never seen to have any trouble scoring at will against Davidson.
