The competition thread

He coaches at St Bonnie VT! Its a tougher job than Richmond. He's in Olean NY. Tougher to recruit, tougher to get to, smaller budget, just a harder job.
conceptually I'd agree ... because we all chose Richmond and wouldn't think of choosing Olean over it. but they've historically been very good and not just under Schmidt. maybe recruits like Olean more than you think. maybe it's the brown uni's.

In my time as a Spider, the most “important” game I’ve ever seen Mooney coach was the NIT quarterfinal against Miami where we blew a huge lead in truly embarrassing fashion.

Eveyrthing good Mooney did was before I got here, so I truly have no allegiance to him. This is a what have you done for me lately business. And ya haven’t done much the past 9 seasons

I hear you ply. Makes sense. I can think of 3 real important games the last few years. The losses to VCU in the quarters when a win likely gets us in the dance, and the OT loss to VCU in the semis. Also, I would include the final game last year against Duquesne since IMO, that got us in the dance.

Morehead’s going to get the win and likely cover...up nine with 14.6 seconds left.

Edit: 76–65, Eagles. Sixth straight win.

This just showed my point. The A-10 quarters shouldn’t be a huge game...winning that should be easy and expected. But Mooney has coached so poorly that it is now an important game. And that’s why the criticism of him is so loud.

Sure if UR had beaten vcu in the A10 tournament in 2015 they would have made the NCAA’s. However it shouldn’t have even came down to that game but it did because UR couldn’t beat jmu or a bad george mason team earlier in the season.

I remember this game. Totally blew this game.

Me too ply. I am not trying to argue. Just debating. I will say it again, I like Schmidt, but I do find it interesting that he gets a lot of praise on here by those that get on our coach. I'm not at all saying they should all support our coach because I expect differing opinions there, but it is all about the post season with many on here, and Schmidt has 2 NCAAs, 1 NIT, and only 1 post season win ( a play in win) in 13 years. So, why do we hear that he is a bargain and could coach circles around our coach, who has 2 NCAAS, 2 NITs, and 6 post season wins (2 NCAA, 4 NIT), including a sweet 16 appearance? And, this doesn't even include last year, when we were 14-4 and 24-7 and SBU was 11-7 and 19-12.

I don't expect to change anyone's mind. Just debating, that's all. But, when a post says Schmidt has done "a lot more" with less than Mooney, and 7 people like that post, it sure seems like it might be an agenda driven issue instead of a normal debate. But, no big deal. All good.
He coaches in Olean, NY. The armpit of NY State. Average snowfall of 100 inches a year. Population of 13K. 1800 undergrad enrollment. The fact that he has the second best record in the A-10 over the past 5 years in miraculous.

My favorite was the Epic Meltdown in the last 5 seconds against Charlotte in the A10 tournament, it may have been the quarters. We were ahead by 3 with 5 seconds left. There was a foul on Lindsay, a missed free throw. Derrick Williams was fouled, he retaliated, was called for a technical. Mooney went nuts and was given 2 technicals. Charlotte made 8 straight foul shots and won 68-63. Coach Mooney did a very good job with that team. They practiced hard and they provided a chance to overcome at the end. Character is not what happened in the past, but how the team responds. Great things are ahead.

In my time of watching Spider hoops I cant remember us winning ANY big A10 tourney games. Every one we had to win we lost.
Off topic... Obi Toppin is fu yo watch on Knicks. Dayton had a good chance of winning it all last year.

USU and CSU in a dogfight. USU went up 10 early, but Colorado State stormed back to take a couple 6-7 point leads. Got tied back up, and the Rams are up two at the half. USU are really struggling from three, but staying in it. Thomas for CSU went on a run off the bench...drained a bunch of threes and scored like 11 straight for them.

That was my freshman year. That was literally my first impression of Mooney...I don't understand how the hell I liked the guy for so long after that being the conclusion of my first year as a fan.

It was a 4/5 game. We lost to a VCU team that won 26 games. Not sure why that should be an automatic win, but whatever.

Bad losses, yes, but I doubt the A-10 gets 4 teams in even if we win those.

Year we won A10 tournament was huge as we had to knock off Xavier and went on to NCAAs.

I've got bad news for you, ply....every Spiders season of the modern (not just Mooney) era has ended with a crushing loss...

Except last year! So we've got that going for us, which is nice....

Chris Mooney is basically the Joe biden of college basketball. A nice guy who is bad at his job but gets to keep his job because he represents his school well despite the fact that he has never done anything and has a very large sample size of doing so.

I was there in Brooklyn. We were in control most of game and then withered. Was also at the semis game in Pitt. The one where we ran a terrible iso for Shawndre resulting in a fadeaway jumper with the game on line. The reason Moon's pants are on fire can be seen in those two games. He sucks vs VCU and in A10 tourney. Putting those 2 together is peak Mooney.

How many more games can we lose and still get an at large. 2?
Zero. The problem is that because we’ve lost to two garbage teams AT HOME, we now need to win every game against the good teams remaining. That means sweeping SLU and VCU and beating Bona if we play them again. Which means any other loss would come to a team that isn’t that good, and that would be another stain on our record. So the margin for error has evaporated completely.

Completely agree. Unfortunately, that's not just going to happen. So disappointing.
