The competition thread

Drake came back from their pause and swept MO State - both straight up and against the spread. Undefeated.

Epic showdown with Loyola coming mid-February.

Loyola got that little bump up to #25, giving us a Q1a win. Rhode Island also bounced back up to a Q2.

Michigan State came back tonight after two weeks of Covid and lost to Rutgers...by 30... And only scored 37 points. I'm beginning to think we may actually have a shot despite those two losses.

Yes, SLU should still be out of synch, would be great to catch them first game back, but this is next best thing. Extra motivation from the wallowing they gave us last year. My prediction, we win by 8. You heard it here first.

My Aztecs are on a roll. Another steam rolling last night. It was funny, I saw an article by a local SD newspaper - basically saying you hate to run up the score, but NET gives you extra credit for winning big against bad to mediocre teams - so as a mid major you have to for your ncaa chances. Again, the thing that really sets them up for year after year success is the defensive mindset. Announcers talked about this at length, doesn't matter who you are - if you are not guarding with full effort, technique and energy you are not on the floor. Wyoming (10-5) coming in was intimidated I believe. Wyoming coach was quoted as saying - we cannot replicate there defense in practice, our guys will just have to get used to it.

Of course Wyoming will probably win by 1 in the rematch Saturday. REally dislike these back to backs - I think A10 has clear advantage in top trying to separate by not having two play same team twice in 3 days.

I think A10 and MW will be in competition for a few bids.

Only thing I got is MSU winning 68-45 at home, then losing 67-37 away is quite a swing...

Rutgers was favored by 3 (I may know someone who laid the points) and was a Quad 1 game for Michigan State. I guess I'm not seeing the connection to our two Quad 4 losses.
huh? I'm not connecting anything to our losses. I'm just saying that score shocked me. any Rutgers team beating any MSU team by 30 would shock me. it's Rutgers. and it's MSU.

No, not you - EL did in the post you replied to.

MSU is way down this year - not even near the bubble. But yes, based on history, that's a shocking score.

The connection is obvious – Michigan State losing to another team by 30 immediately puts us into the at-large conversation.

Lunardi had us and Michigan State as neck-and-neck for the final spot over the past few days. Colorado State has since moved in front of both of us, but at least some bracketology folks consider us and the Spartans very close...at least until Rutgers blew them out.

Man, they are trying to put an end to the Drake train. 19 point spread!

If you had bet $1 on Drake in their first game, and let it ride every game all season...

....you'd almost have enough to buy a share of GameStop.

Hofstra's trying to hold off UNCW, while Loyola and Missouri State will be tipping off a big game in just a few minutes.

Hoftstra got the sweep over UNCW. They’re quickly moving up...were already a Q3 for us before today’s win.

Loyola is absolutely destroying a decent Missouri State team. They were up 41–16 at the half and just cruising through the second half.

Loyola rolls, 72–46...that's 7 wins in a row, 9–1 in MVC, 14–3 overall. They and Missouri State will run it back again tomorrow.

Kentucky has also quietly snuck up to a Q1, so we're 3–1 against Q1 teams at the moment.

Drake survives at home against a bad Illinois State team in OT to remain undefeated. Illinois State had a layup at the OT buzzer to try force another one, but couldn't get it to fall. Needless to say, Drake didn't cover.

Loyola-Drake series in Des Moines in a couple of weeks is looming large.

Unless they go on a Covid pause. It's been known to happen.

First non-cover for Drake all season. Incredible streak.

A two-point win over them is starting to feel like the 20-point win we all thought we should have had.
