Hmmm. St. Mary's coach really talked about the defense a lot. You know who else emphasizes defense. SDSU. Who else? VCU. Who are three mid majors that are good and in contention for the NCAA's about 80% of the seasons. VCU, ST Mary's and SDSU.
And who loses 1st round games about 80% of the time? vcu

Does Mooney have a better NCAA record than VCU in the A10? 3-3 vs 2-8? 7-9 if you include their final four run.

VCU's toughest opponent for the year and couldn't match them. STM defense handled VCU's inconsistent offense. STM couldn't hit the 3s but scored plenty inside the arc. PoffT ad of +4 and 2ndChP 15-4 over VCU. They were hot of late but result shows the end product of the weak A10.

Is the A10 still pursuing the OOC scheduling strategy they put out maybe 6-8 years ago? It was designed in part to challenge the top teams to schedule stronger SOS while encouraging weaker teams to plan a lighter more winnable schedule.

Feel like I haven’t heard if that’s still an active policy. I know they are doing more of that IC based on home and homes with like-positioned programs.

Great to see VCU get beat by the give and go and back door cuts all game. Fun to watch St. Mary's out smart and dismantle the Ram defense. Also so nice to see a well coached team.

VCU radio guys all but begging people to contribute to the Rams' NIL fund. "It WILL make a difference," they say.

Sounds like they are worried about losing Ace or whoever else. Too bad, so sad. Baldwin can't risk any more injuries. He should get paid while he has the chance.
I say we cancel the sex festival this weekend at UR and use that money for our NIL fund.

I am curious how the current 15 members of done over the last 10 Tournaments (11 seasons including not in the A10).

Actually I meant by team cumulative of years. March 2013 to March 2023…

Most know that the A-10 is weak and getting worse. However, considering the conference performance of the Spiders, we can't say too much about it. 😦

I don’t think Keatts is that good. Shrewsbury looks legit on the other hand.

I’d put my $ on Shrewsbury to Gtown if I had to. Rhoades isn’t going anywhere imo. 1 reason is he’s got a great team returning. He’d be in same position next year if not better & could have a Georgetown type job again or better.

Agree. Going nowhere if was in his shoes. Doesn't seem to have the ego of Wade. He's got it good making I believe 1.7M and under contract for about 4-5 more years. With weak A10 not appearing to change next year, brings back plenty and maybe bump in salary if team makes it again. Read somewhere Miller gets 2M and Martin 1.7M. Even Grant getting around that number.

Read this somewhere ....
If Georgetown were to fire Ewing, here is the buyout total that would be owed him to during each year.
21-22: $18.455 million
22-23: $14.9 million
23-24: $11.25 million
24-25: $7.5 million
25-26: $3.75 million

With that owed think they will try to get someone at 3M max of if more shorter term contract? Unless their not as fragile as UR higher-ups. Rhoades be taking a big risk going to a much stronger conference for IMO not that much more money. One that Mooney correctly didn't do going too Cal if he really was their man?

Rhoades don't go this route .....
From having it great at Gonzaga to failure at Minny at least the AD/above believed so though 5 in 7 seasons above .500 in Big Ten. Guess he only won 53% of his games lol and then this from LBST site ....

Dan Monson has rebuilt the Long Beach State basketball program in his 15 seasons with the Beach. The winningest coach in LBSU history, Monson has piled up over 200 wins at LBSU and led Long Beach State to four Big West Championships, seven top three finishes, four NIT appearances as well as a trip to the 2011-12 NCAA Tournament.

253-258 record ..... not mentioned losingest coach also. Don't think he even makes 400K a year?

I don’t think he is going anywhere unless VCU terminates him and if he keeps winning I don’t see the VCU cutting him loose. He likes VCU and the Greater Richmond area and earns more than the comfortable UR coach. Rhodes isn’t chasing a P5 job unlike the other coaches that processed him.

Have also heard Rhodes said he will never coach at a school with strong academic requirements again.

While I know Georgetown is an academically rigorous university. They’ve never let academics restrict their recruiting.

My guess is that one would be a reasonable transition.

And I don't see vcu firing him unless he pulls a 'Mooney' which won't happen

I don't see the upside for Cooley to leave Providence for Georgetown. can G'town really pay that much more? especially with that awful looking Ewing extension buyout?

Yes, have not understood that move for Cooley at all. He is from Providence, seems to be loved by the fanbase, and had done very well. I don't see the big benefit either. Could just be him and his agent are thinking may as well get another raise out of this.

Penn State is going to roll up the Brink's truck to keep Shrewsbury, will be interesting to see if they can keep him though. His kid is also a Penn State recruit for next year, so this makes the decision much more of a family one.

The offense Shrewsbury developed at Penn State was pretty unique, it really fit his personnel. It will be interesting to see if that is his offense or if he is really that adaptable to personnel, because his 5 guard system this year was a product of having a bunch of really good shooter, a similar lack of quality big men, and a player like Pickett, who was really a unicorn for a guard these days and teams just could not stop his game.

Yeah, Rhoades knows he has at good at VCU, I don't see him succeeding at a place like Georgetown.

And St. Mary's easy dismantling of VCU really confirmed what we all knew. The A-10 this year was nothing more than a middling mid major. We have all seen the downgrade since Xavier and Temple left (Butler was here for 1 year, I don't even really count them) and it is disturbing.

Questions for me:

Can our top tier schools, VCU, Dayton, and St. Louis return to Top 25 caliber status, at least one them has to be ranked every year.

Will UMass and Rhode Island splash hires last year result in those program returning to a more prominent status in the league, first year result are not encourgaing.

Can Davidson overachieve consistently with McKillop Jr at the helm?

Is Loyola Chicago an actual good addition to the league or did we just grab them at their peak value?

I don't even have a question about us being a prominent player, Hardt and Queally already answered that.

I was very skeptical of the Jeff Goodman type's hype (I think he specifically called out that umass and URI would excel with these hires) of the umass and uri hires. Martin was on the down trend at South Carolina, and seemed like a soft landing spot with big bucks. We already see as soon as they hit a bump this season he was fighting with the fans on twitter. Like his spunk but not convinced he is good fit in Amherst. I see VCU being pretty good every year, but nothing screams to me that Rhodes will have Shaka type success. Grant seems to be in a down spiral at Dayton, they are the most set up for success in the A10 - they have best fan base and everything in place - if they can get a good coach. Ford - not sold on either. He seems to underacheive way more than overacheive. Which is the same complaint as Mooney.

Cooley put his house on the market this morning. Take from that what you may.

He probably feels the ceiling at Providence is Sweet Sixteen or Elite Eight but at Georgetown it is a national title. Whether that's still the case, who knows.
