Charlotte Game (and travel) thread - Wed 11/13 7pm ESPN+

What is the fewest number of games won in a season under Mooney? We could be looking up at that.

Right now we are not good. We are missing wide open 3's, missing ft's, and playing like a team that has not played much together. I think we will get to 13 or 14 wins, but it is going to be a long season if someone does not emerge.

What are we doing with our corner/baseline defense? They're either getting a wide-open 3 or a backdoor cut every possesion. It's almost like we're switching at the first sign of any movement.
We are. I noticed it too. When a guys cuts from top of key down the lane, the cutter's defender is now apparently leaving his man to run to guard the corner shooter because the corner shooter's man is now hedging into the lane and is responsible for the cutter. Which has so far left every defender out of position to guard their new guy. Instinct when your man cuts is to stay with him, so the cutter's defenders are late to the corners, leading to 3s, and the Charlotte coach also then had those corner men cut backdoor, leaving the cutter's defender way in the dust.

We gave up a bucket to the FT shooter bc we didn't block out.

Tyne got absolutely bullied bc of his size at about the 4:30 mark and UR down 10. Backdown by a 6'3" guard.

We can't score, we can't shoot, we can't defend in space, we have no shot blockers or rim protectors and the substitution patterns and lineup decisions by Moon have been absolutely atrocious.

Good thing UR handed out that snap extension!! Great returns so far! Getting close to holiday bonus time too!!

Reversion to the mean.

That was my worst game experience since at Toledo or at Bill and the ...

Hmm since it’s hard to talk about tonight.

But road games in person I’d have to think about it. First comes to mind is Manhattan at MSG in 2003. Frustrating bad Jerry wainwright game. Tho game experience great bc we got to play at MSG. Surreal bc pretty empty too. It was oddly played AFTER the Duke-Texas game. & we actually had the home court advantage.

Also Radford at the Anacostia arena in DC. 2019. Pretty empty too. But a disheartening basically blowout loss given our start & importance. But sat courtside so fun experience in that regard.

Ugly games but ironically two very good teams. 1 ncaa and 1 ncaa Covid likely killed.

That was my worst game experience since at Toledo or at Bill and the ... but more importantly got some better news to share. Talked to Will Gipe's Dad before the game and Will and his wife have just adopted a baby / congrats to them
How will this help us win more basketball games?

The worst games ever were Mooney's first year. Some horrific game against Western Michigan, I think, that was like 42-41 in overtime. l I don't feel like looking up the specifics or trying to remember anything about it. Another game or two were close to that bad. Just painful stuff.

We have about 10 good players who could be 2nd teamers on some A10 teams. Hunt is the exception
I know what you meant with this statement, think you just butchered the sentence structure.

The player with the most talent in both games so far has been on the opponent's team. Against Marist and a poor Charlotte team. Damning.

So what happened to the 91 point games and the 3 point shooting from the secret scrimmages?

couldn't even muster 50 points against a middle of the pack AAC, Presbyterian College scored nearly double the amount of points on Charlotte than we did so they are that much more talented on the offensive side than we are? The defending A10 regular season champs? fools gold, like everything else Moonie has done in the past decade.

Buckle up boys, the A10 is going to DEVOUR us alive.

if we haven't figured things out by now, we're doing it wrong.
I am going to say it again. Looks like the same plan as last year. Difference is that King is the best one year transfer ever for Mooney and he had three guys with 2-3 years of in game system experience.
The rest are just running the offense with no particular thought on really being assertive in that offense.

In past we could sometimes get by with unathletic groups, but that was when the unathletic guys were in their 2nd and thirds years in the system and not their 2nd or 3rd month.
Another point I keep making, but few seem to agree. Mooney’s system takes time. The problem is that these guys are thinking vs playing. They haven’t done enough reps to have the needed muscle memory to “flow” like Mooney likes to see and to execute. At best it takes 2 years to produce what he knows. More often it takes 3 years. This year is a base building year for next year.

Mooney has been the coach for 20 years. I have only been watching the Spiders for 2/3 of the time he has been here and it is always the SAME. Everyone knows what they are going to get.

The only difference so far is that the Forum glass half full crowd seems to be MIA.

we can’t take 2-3 years to teach guys “the system”, not in this day and age of transfers. Is it really that complicated? Asking the basketball pros out there…

This. A million times this. I didn't notice it as much against Marist, so it seems like an adjustment made in the last 2/3 days. It's a terrible adjustment.

Where are all of the Mooney shaft polishers today. You know the guys telling us about how good the players looked in the offseason, how awesome our NIL is, and how all of the NIL guys love Moondog. Damn, if I were writing big checks to pay players, I might want some better outcomes than this. And thank god, Hardt wrapped Mooney up with an extension last year to fend off of the other big time programs coming after him.

They are in the emergency bunker waiting for the all clear alert to sound if we are able to sneak past Bucknell on Saturday.

It is always amazing how they go into hiding whenever their savior does his 56% percent act. Yet, those of us are here through thick and thin are not "real" fans.

Bucknell is gonna be a lot tougher than anyone thought when the season started and that is not some reflection on Bucknell either; just us.
