Charlotte Game (and travel) thread - Wed 11/13 7pm ESPN+

I think that was the worst half of Richmond basketball I've watched since we were down 40-14 vs. Cincinnati back in 2017. We look inept offensively.
Memories of Longwood & Delaware.

Makes one appreciate the first game take down of Mount Olive. We certainly showed them we could run a really good team out of the gym.

Needs to be a 60 minutes lead story about why McGlothin and Robinson are redshirted ... makes even less sense now

I think this game will tell us if the Marist game was more of a brand new teams first time together and things didn't jell OR we have serious roster issues and our preseason rankings from most of the A-10 experts are valid.

I still like our roster, I think we have talent and depth. What I question after Marist is whether or not our genius 56% percenter coach can effectively manage the roster and deploy the talent in rotations that actually work. In Game 1, I didn't see any semblance of a rotation, it was just lets throw guys out there and see what happens type of approach.
Don't think we are going to like the answer to this question.

We look very bad on offense. We have no one who is really looking to create any kind of offense on their own. We talked earlier about not having an alpha and that's true but way worse than that. We really don't have anyone who even attacks once the offense creates advantages that it is designed to. Hunt is a little, but even he is doing it only later in possessions etc. Glou seems willing, but lost. The rest are just running the offense with no particular thought on really being assertive in that offense. Our 3 point shooting is bad, but the opportunities are really bad.

Big problem is really how unathletic we are collectively. King, DJii, Bigs, Harris all well more athletic than anything we have this year, plus quinn was much more athletic and more skilled than our bigs this year. In past we could sometimes get by with unathletic groups, but that was when the unathletic guys were in their 2nd and thirds years in the system and not their 2nd or 3rd month.

I continue to be flummoxed by our complete disinterest in tracking down rebounds and boxing out.

Let me add that I have no idea what we are doing on defense and why we end up chasing all over the court. And if you are chasing all over like we are, its no surprise we are giving up a ton of free throws!

At this point, why not try GW3 and Soulis? Couldn’t be any worse

Is GW that guy who takes his warm up off but hasn’t entered the game? Find a bit strange. Usually a sign that someone is pissed off about not playing. Btw that’s purely anecdotal nothing more.

Why isn’t Beagle starting? He’s not perfect but he’s played better than Walz in all 3 games
Not saying he isnt the better choice, but he has 4 turnovers in about 15 minutes so far. He isnt really a high post center like we run through. And his defense isnt great. He's also missed a bunch of open cutters. Against Marist, he took zero shots!

Again, its not like Walz doesn't have his issues too, but I am not so sure how obvious it is just cuse Beagle made a few buckets tonight!

From down 2 to down 11 and no timeout from Moon! But we get a bucket and he takes the patented Moon TO after a bucket!

Whatever it is he wants to tell his guys, why is it only ever the right time to do it after we score and not in the middle of the run?

What are we doing with our corner/baseline defense? They're either getting a wide-open 3 or a backdoor cut every possesion. It's almost like we're switching at the first sign of any movement.

Buckle up everyone, this is going to be a long season.

I think what these last 2 games have shown us is that this team does better when there is an alpha (particularly a PG) on the team who is the go-to scorer. We think of our best teams who had King, Gilly, Kendall Anthony, Kevin Anderson, all were dynamic scoring PGs. We were touting balanced scoring as a positive, but it can be a detractor if no one is willing to be “the guy” and will this team to a win, and instead our offense plan is to pass the ball aimlessly hoping something will happen.

Also, didn’t realize Kevin Smith is an assistant coach for Charlotte. I’m sure it hurts him a bit watching us play like this, even though he was on the other side tonight.

Yeah agreed. His ball handling leaves a lot to be desired right now and there was at least 1 or 2 obvious cutters he missed and another he tried that he shouldn’t. That said we may need him because looking to score.

Agreed. Beagle is not all A10 by any means (as I said not perfect). But I do think it’s clear he is better than Walz to most who have watched the games.

Side note, hope Walz is ok. Concussions are scary

Idk, he’s pretty poor on defense. But yes he’s at least looking to shoot. Walz is like 6’11” and putting up a hook and a fadeaway. I mean come on, bang around bruv.

We have about 10 good players who could be 2nd teamers on some A10 teams. Hunt is the exception
