BEAT IOWA!

I’m pretty sure the last one was Michigan State in 2000, but I may be wrong on that.
"I figured Big might legitmately ask when the A10's last champhionship was - in Lunardi's dumb virtual fake tourney, didn't Dayton and Obi pull it off in 2020?"

He can do that but the point is that the A10 is a mid major which might get 2 or 3 teams in tops each year, and none are seeded higher than 10, the exception being Dayton... poor Dayton!! The Big10 gets 8-9 teams in every year, many seeded 1 or 2, and they havent won since 2000. that is pretty pathetic and it makes you wonder how the NCAA and the rankings fall for it year after year.

We really need to get better smack talk

“Your conference hasn’t won a title since 2000” is about as lame as it gets.

We’re a bit rusty, Mooney hasn’t given us a reason to talk smack in 11 years. We’ll get there

A lot of the outcome is going to be, do the officials allow a lot of contact or call touch fouls. Basketball needs to require some consistency in how fouls are called between conferences

Hard to predict this one for me. Over the course of the season, Iowa has hands down been better. But Us with a full Goose have been a different team.

If we play with the intensity and desperation we did in the A10 Tourney, we can play with anyone. Hope we bring it and shock the world!

spiders by 3.

Not good. Although their candy a**es are still talking smoke about beating Penn State when they knocked QB1 out at home and we had to play this kid, who quite literally would be 3rd on our depth chart at UR.
Are we? Where? Or are you just still bitter about a loss 6 months ago? ;-)

FWIW Iowa gave up early points every game this year and clamped down in the 2nd half. That’s just how our defense is built. So it’s really difficult to say how that game ends with or without the injury.

Regardless, we are here for basketball. Best of luck on Thursday to the Spiders. Hawks are playing exceptional ball right now, and for once in my life I can say I am confident in this team whenever I watch them. Never been able to say that about an Iowa team in the past, including last year’s 2-seed Garza squad.

Lots of talk about Joe Toussiant on here, however it’s fairly pointless considering he really only plays 10 minutes / game. He’s a big contributor, but he is far from your biggest problem. Your issue will be that we have 3 6-8 slasher wings that can rain 3’s, and 4 proven guards that all have different qualities. Keegan, Kris, PMac, and Perkins are matchup problems for anyone in the country - let alone a smaller sized A10 school. That doesn’t include Bohannon, Joe T, Connor, or Sandfordt who all can fill it up and/or play solid D (except JBo).

Anything can happen in March, but hoping for a 15-20 pt win.

ChiaPet21, we are all hoping for 15-20 pt win. Neither of these two teams plays much defense. First one to 80 wins.

As # 45 once said, don't believe what you here or see. Iowa lost the best player in college basketball last year to graduation and their 2nd best player early to the NBA draft. Both of these players now have full NBA contracts. Iowa also lost a starting player with 2 years left to the portal and ended up at the University of Kentucky. You don't get a scholarship to Kentucky if your not exceptional. The 4th player Iowa lost was a 7 footer to the portal and Xavier University and he played a major roll for Xavier as the first off the bench and part time starter.
You don't lose that kind of fire power and not suffer some effect of those losses.
Even though the Big Ten got 9 teams in the tournament the highest seeded teams are a 3 seed in Wisconsin and Purdue. The league is not as strong as it has been in the past as a 5 seed Iowa team with a majority of their players sophomores & freshmen won the Big Ten Tournament over a preseason powerhouse Purdue that had supposedly the best guard and the 2 best centers in the league. Your team has all those grad seniors.
I'm sure you already have your own opinions on Thursday's upcoming game, good luck.

Ok I could say expecting but I’ve watched enough March madness in my life.

I think you’ll be sadly surprised to see our defense if you go in thinking we don’t play D. Our team in the past 6 weeks has been top 3 in the Big Ten in defensive efficiency. So best of luck, but you shouldn’t be looking at our “season-long” stats to get a good idea for the type of team we are right now. Far and away different team since February, and feel free to look back at the ISU or Rutgers games on how to beat us, but those scouting reports won’t help you much. Those games were 3-4 months ago.

Maybe look at the Illini loss from last week, but we shot 40% from the line, and they have a 7-1 monster named Kofi that you don’t.

Hawks 92-69

What you don’t know is that the University of Richmond has played the best team that ever played the game every time we step on to the court. We are use to it.

Sorry but your schedule says otherwise. You lost to Maryland, Drake and Ms St.

You too CupcakeK.
ChiaPet, I would normally agree with you. But our boys are on a mission if I ever saw one. They have unfinished business. They are climaxing their full potential like I’ve never seen, and at the right time. Feels like they are just getting started. All I know is that Richmond will not go down without a herculean fight.

So your argument is “don’t look at our early games to judge us” but “your early games define you”. Interesting logic.

You guys are rightly favored, but you shouldn’t take us so lightly. We’ve for sure been an inconsistent team, but can play with anyone, especially when teams aren’t use to our style of play.

I imagine we’ll try to slow it down a bit. Less possessions is in our favor. Should be a classic 12-5 matchup.

No not really. If the only standard you have is national championships then all you are really saying is the conference with the most dominant team is the best. The Big Ten is at the top every year because more often than not it beats most competition outside it's conference. It has the biggest tv footprint as well which means it brings the most revenue to the table. Many of the teams that get beat from the Big Ten every year are the lower seed. They are supposed to lose if seeding is to be believed. The Big Ten by the way has won the Big Ten Acc challenge the last three years and is 6-2-3 over the last ten years. We have had multiple teams in the final four not just Michigan State. I don't think we ever have someone outside of Michigan State or Michigan that people think could make a serious run at a national championship but then again no one would be surprised if it happened from someone else like the team everyone hates Wisconsin.

Curious what type of school you all are? Is it mostly local kids going to a solid regional school or are you more of a private that pulls kids from all over? Where do kids land after they graduate? Assume most of your fanbase went to college there? How old is the school? Pretty part of the country but personally haven't spent any time in Richmond
I really don't agree with this. Yes, if a conference produces the same national champion regularly and no other team even contends then I can understand, but that really isn't the case for any of the other power conferences. Before the Big East break up 4 different teams have won the NC. ACC has had many different teams. Big 12, Pac 12, SEC have all had a few different champions.
When you have 8 or 9 teams
We really need to get better smack talk

The smack talk is that there is a lot of history where Big10 teams, especially those not named Wisconsin or have Michigan in their name, who have been major disappointments in the Dance. Iowa being one of them last year.

Not taking any game in March lightly. But someone earlier said that your team is loaded with experienced seniors. We lost 4 of our 5 best players from last season, 2 to the NBA, so it would be expected that this team would need some time to figure it out. Given your experience, I would imagine that your team in December/January would actually have advantage over younger teams who are still gelling.

Most here agree with you (feel free to look back at all our threads being frustrated throughout the season).

The transitive property of basketball is always a foolish game to play. We’re super experienced, but didn’t have that killer instinct all year. We seem to have found it this past weekend. That makes us dangerous.

All of those amazing players from last year and how far did your coach take Iowa in the dance as a 2 seed? With that history it is surprising their is so much confidence on your side. Just saying.

Fair point, but like you all feel good about the way your team is playing the last weekend, many Iowa fans have felt that way about this Hawk team the past 6 weeks. There’s not a team in the country I legitimately don’t think we can beat. Will we? Only time will tell.

And you are right, history is not on our side. We also said that going into the Big Ten Tourney last week. This team just feels different, and they are playing for each other. Much different than any Iowa team I’ve ever watched.

Now your trash talk is “haha you lost in the tournament early last year” after the season we had last year? I mean come on this is just 5 year old level banter here. Come up with something good or sit this one out

This will surely piss off some iowa fans but the big ten is massively overrated. I’m sorry but they didn’t deserve to get 9 teams in the tournament. Big ten every year gets an absurd amount of teams in the NCAA’s but most fold up early and are out before the sweet 16. That will play out again this year. I bet there will at best be 3 big ten teams left by the sweet 16 and that there will also be an ACC team not named Duke that will go further in the tournament than the farthest big ten team.
Also to iowa fans; not saying this so much about you guys but more so about the rest of the big ten; the style of play in that league is brutal to watch. All it is is throw the ball to the big man inside and hack each other for 40 minutes. It also seems to me that it’s a league rule in the big ten to have as many reviews and timeouts in the final minute of the game as possible, even when one team is up by like 8 or so. Big ten is an absolute joke and gets all the attention it gets because they got a good tv deal. You can’t deny the facts.
This year 6 of 9 B1G teams are seeded to fold up early and be out before the sweet 16. Not a hot take.

Gilly is a steal's artist, he is gonna make your guards look silly probably several times again. With that said, his small stature and sometimes over eagerness to go for the steal work against him. Despite being our steals leader, he is not our best defender. That is our other guard Gustavson (Goose). He has the ability to really lock down whomever he is guarding.

The rest of our defense is lackluster. Burton is an NBA prospect, super athletic, fluid player. He does not move his feet well though on defense and can be beaten from guys with a big first step. Our help defense is very slow to react at times and good ball movement will get you an open shot. Golden, our center, is so foul adverse on the defensive end, he can sometimes be a turnstile.

I will say that was most of the season. Last few games of the regular season and in the A-10 tournament our defense really tightened up. I attribute that a lot to Goose, who was injured first half of the season and then had to work himself back into playing shape. I think he is locked in and that has made everyone a bit better.

Wondering who ends of guarding Murray, I think that will fall on Burton, but would love to see Goose get that assignment
Great post but you are forgetting the increased minutes for Grace who is a much better all around defender and down low defender than Golden. We have been playing them more together, which Im not sure works well against a good 3 point shooting team but should help with defensive rebounding.

All I know about Iowa is that they have “real fans”. The kind that show up no matter if the team sucks and they never complain. They are meat & potatoes people. They hate billboards because words scare them. They don’t care about misspellings or bad grammar…and they love a good regatta.

I think that’s everything Hardt has taught me, but I’m sure I’m blatantly ignoring some meaningful factual information (coincidence???)
