Andre Wesson - 2016 Offer

Thanks for consistently producing such interesting and insightful posts. This was a huge contribution to the thread.
Thanks for producing such an interesting and insightful post  it was huge contribution to the thread.

If you roll your eyes, you show with your eyes that you don't believe someone or aren't interested in what they're saying. It's a little different from sarcasm which is the use of irony to mock or convey contempt.

People say I am sarcastic if they are being negative and I agree with them in a way that shows I don't agree with them. While I see that as facetious and doing the same thing to a positive comment as sarcastic.

By the way, what is this board about again? I forget...

By the way, what is this board about again? I forget...

Now it appears this board is about explaining the difference between "facetious" and "sarcastic" and explaining the intent of some of your posts.

If I understand what you are saying, I think your point is well-taken. I also think is supports my point in that on at least a few occasions others have expressed that they wished there were a "sarcastic" emoji or emoticon to help them better understand or explain their posts or the posts of others. I agree with them because I believe that effective communication is important even on a basketball message board.

My initial post which generated this progeny was a compliment to Fan2011 for being able to express sarcasm without the use of an emoji or emoticon, a task not easily achieved. Not-A-Homer thereafter responded using an emoticon suggesting that the emoticon "rolling one's eyes" expressed sarcasm. I responded distinguishing the two. This, perhaps along with other posts of mine, offended you, and for that I apologize. My intent was to make a comment about being able to effectively express oneself on this board and better convey one's intended message. I, for one, have often misread the intent and/or meaning of several posts on this board until they were later questioned and then explained. And I do not have Aphasia.

It is undeniable that my post was not directly related to basketball, but rather related to effective communication, as was my post complimenting Fan2011. I believe my point was appropriate for this board inasmuch as only here would it have been in context.

I was not offended but was saddened that this topic is the best thing we have to discuss on this board.
It seems that a good portion of our discussions have been off topic recently and that may be a statement on where we are at the moment.

As to my posts, they may be a good illustration of how trying to get two different points across at once isn't effective communication.
I was attempting to:
- show that a tangent topic was becoming a focal point
- genuinely contribute to that tangent topic
simultaneously...

So the thought process was...we are getting off topic...I am actually interested in something related to this "off topic" topic...We are often off topic recently...

If Andre is looking for an offer from Ohio State, then he may be disappointed. OSC

Kind of confirms what I would expect, all of those offers are to guys who are 4* or better points guards and shooting guards. There is one PF prospect on there, no small forwards.

I think OSU isn't the most likely fit for Andre, but he could easily end up somewhere else if a P5 offer comes in. I'm actually more worried about the Xavier offer.

Enjoy seeing him do well, but I think it benefits us if his team loses sooner rather than later.

Westerville South wins...regional champs and moving on to the state semifinals next Friday night. Andre with 13 and 5 boards. Had at least one three and apparently a ridiculous dunk.

Agree Tbone, whatever complaints we may have, I don't think you can fault our coaching staff on the effort expended on Andre's recruitment. Seems that we have executed a nice strategy on the entire 2016 class, and 2017 so far too. That does give me hope in the future. Is this different than the approach on 2014 and 2015 classes? Or is it just luck, and some top players in the area wanting to play in front of family? Would really like to have Wesson in the fold. Then go get that grad transfer banger inside, AND let them play next year. Force yourself to play Paul F five minutes into the game. Let Run DMB cut his teeth early in the year, same for Nick and Grant. And let's see those changes talked about. Remember "the posse" employed? He has it in him to try something new. Let's experiment and then employ the best strategy after a third of the season.

There is probably some luck in getting two Local guys and a third who has Richmond ties but it feels like we've just put forth a better effort. I suspect this was a response to two really poor recruiting years prior so someone learned something I hope.

I think Chris has been much more hands on with the recruiting lately. If we want to win on the recruiting trail, Chris needs to work as hard as guys like Archie, Wade and Hurley.

My opinion: Matta is trying to string this out as long as possible to get Butler out of the picture. He doesn't give a crap about us. Why would he? His beef with us happened a lifetime ago when Beilein was our coach anyway. But I think he wants to protect his turf and knows he can play this "Hey, we're really interested in you!" card and Wesson will not sign anywhere else because he wants to go to OSU.

So it's a game of chicken, but it's a game we can actually afford to play because we have several open scholarships, unlike OSU and Butler. I think we three are the only true players in this, unless for some reason he wants to be close to home and Akron ends up being the only Ohio offer he gets.

Doesn't both Butler & X have 2 spots and one outstanding offer? Hopefully they both move on soon...

I don't believe X is a factor here. Their offer was much earlier and it was a whoever-takes-it-gets-it deal. He didn't take it, so I think that was the end of it. Butler does have 2 open spots like we do, though I guess I'm expecting that we will end up with a third one one way or another, so I still think we have more wiggle room.

I wonder what Mooney's plan is for our last 2 spots. Is a single spot reserved for Ford or Wesson, and the last one for a center or a transfer? Or do we want both Ford and Wesson? I would think we want someone 6'8+ or taller for our last spot.

Yes. We want BOTH Ford and Wesson! OSC

As much as I think Matta is a colossal dbag, I doubt he's stringing this kid along as an fu to Butler or anyone. It doesn't endear him to future recruits to do so.

I am not sure I really get the end game though. The most plausible scenario is that OSU is keeping him warm on the off, off, off chance that one of their 7 other offers doesn't pan out. 6 of those offers are for positions of far greater need (PG/SG), and I would expect that they think one of them will come their way. But if all end up going elsewhere, they can reasonably presume that Andre would wait it out to see if a spot remains open. I also presume this means there is some relatively firm "reply by" date they've given to these other guys and it coincides somewhat closely with the "end of the season" after Westerville competes for the state championship.

It has become pretty clear that Wesson is keeping UR in his back pocket "in case of emergency." If he really wanted to be a Spider he would have already signed the deal.

With that said, I can't fault the coaches effort on this one. They have gone after him hard, don't know how much more they could have done.

Homer, based on the numerous tweets documenting visits by our coaching staff including Coach Mooney, they have done their best. Even observed Keith Gill visiting with Andre's parents during their visit to UR. Apparently we are all in on him, too bad he has not yet realized the great opportunity that UR represents. OSC

No, he said specifically he was not going to commit anywhere until his basketball season was over.

I wouldn't call us a back pocket offer for Andre. Like any kid, he's trying to get to the best offer/program he can. He could verbal to us, but he can't sign until April, so it's sort of irrelevant. It would of course be nice if he loved him some Spiders, but as 97 is fond of noting, we don't necessarily want guys who jump to us because we are far and away their best offer. We have to go hard after good players who hopefully see that we have a lot to offer them.

Obviously his first choice is Ohio State. He's not going to sign with anyone until he knows for sure that he doesn't have an offer from them.

Nothing wrong with that. He should be doing what he is doing and we should be going after him hard.

Not too much new in here.

“[Ohio State has] been to a few games and they said they’ve definitely liked what they’ve seen,” Wesson said. “They just want me to keep doing what I’m doing right now, focus on winning a state championship right now and we’ll get more into it and talk to me more after the season.” [...]

“A Big Ten offer, that’s big,” he said. “If it happens, that’d be nice.”

Also a little bit of color on OSU's roster crunch that's making them be very careful about extending an offer to Andre. Although with transfers and the possibility of a guy or two going pro early over the next couple of years, I imagine things will loosen up. But for now, they're tight on spots.
