Andre Wesson - 2016 Offer

I want JJ to do two things next year:

1) Take the ball to the rack some, he only tried twice all season that I can recall, and I felt like his handle was good and his body is big enough to stand the banging.
2) Please, please, please, use all of the 3 point arc. Stop shooting from 1-2 feet behind it.

He will be markedly more efficient on offense if he just does those two things.

Now that Andre's season is done, had he given any indication how long after it was completed that he would be making his decision?

Good question. I know he had previously indicated that he would not be making his decision until the Spring signing period began. I think that begins in April. Someone can correct that date though if they know more positively.

We hoped that Trey and Deion's offense would come around as well. How did that turn out? I'm not giving up on JJ but I watched him all year and yeah his minutes increased but I don't see anything more than a 6th or 7th man off the bench type of player.

Josh Jones was a player that you could see potential to be a great player, Khwan has potential to be a really great player. As 9 legs pointed out above, there are some holes in JJ games (average speed, problems with his shooting mechanics, can't really create his own shot) that will inhibit his offensive upside. Defensively, he reminds me a lot of Trey Davis, in that he doesn't do anything really poorly to say he is a bad defender, but doesn't do anything really well that would indicate that he will be an above average defender.

He's a freshman and he can certainly get better though.

I can't argue about his shooting form since I don't know much about it, but I don't think JJ has just average quickness. JJ seemed like the second best on-ball defender on our team, he and Khwan were the best at actually staying in front of their man. Of course there is no stat for 'staying in front of your man', so it is hard to quantify. Over the last 6 games of the season he took time away from Trey, Deion and Wood and averaged 16 minutes a game. Mooney even had him in at the end of games, using him as a defensive sub during offense-defense substitutions. He is a good defender, and just a freshmen. As for creating his own shot, I could go on a long rant about that but I will hold off.

JJ can already play defense at an A10 level. Or at least he can play better defense than most of our team did last year. His shooting has not been great, he has taken 33 3FG attempts and has only made 6 of them (he did show he can finish around the rim and make free throws though). Keep in mind there was a stretch this year where TJ was 5-33 from 3pt range (worse than JJ!!!!!!), and we know that TJ is actually a very good 3pt shooter. Low statistics. It remains to be seen how good JJ will be on offense.

I do not know about his decision but 4/13/2016-5/18/2016 is the period that the signature needs to be dated.

2011, good reply, I could go on a long rant about how a wet paper bag could take defensive minutes away from Trey, Deion, and Marshall, but I too will hold off. But, I will agree he was not any worse than those 3 and he is only a freshman, so all things being equal he has potential to develop into a good defender. After our team defensive performance this year, I have a tough time calling anyone a good defender on our team (except for Khwan, who I can at least point to specific defensive plays each game).

Ulla, No offense intended, but if JJ was our # 1 target in last year's class, it highlights and amplifies our recruiting shortcomings. He has average speed, not particularly quick and has a 'hitch" in his shot. If he was a 3 star recruit and destined for stardom why did Mooney go after Buckingham and Sherrod. It is mighty crowded in the backcourt now and we have more coming in the next class.

I'm thinking that Julius was the highest priority that actually signed with the Spiders--that's my guess.

Fan, was told that Julius was our #1 priority. He was getting looks from Florida, Kansas and others. He was under the radar as he did not play AAU. Someone on this board compared him to Deion who averaged 13 points/game in high school. Julius averaged 28 his junior year and something like 23 his senior year as defenses focussed on him. You heard it here first: Julius will be a contributor to UR hoops. Moreover, the preponderance of 6'3" - 6'6" shooters is due to the changing emphasis in both college and pro hoops, not to any deficiences seen in Jesse or Julius. One can/will see us and others playing with 3 or 4 big guards who can shoot, rebound and play defense. UR is going to be one of the leaders based on our recruits last year and the next two years. Roll Spide! OSC

At the risk of igniting your rant, I am going to disagree with one point.

Last season Trey Davis did seem to defend similar to his father. By denying passes to his assigned player. However since he was on the perimeter, the opponent would simply attempt a different pass and the pass not made could be easily missed by observers. Since his father defended the post before the 3 point shot, opponent's still attempt the pass and got it stolen. Now his defense of a player who already had the ball is a different debate.

But I agree that this season everyone outside of Khwan in the last month or so played far below average defense.

It will be great if you are correct. However, I suspect that he will end up mostly banished to the bench by Buckingham, Sherod, & Godwin (the following year). If JJ is good enough to beat those 3 for playing time, it will be a good problem to have.

I think both Nick and Marquis project as small forwards for us whereas Julius and RunDMB are SGs. Next year is a bit crowded at the 2 with KF playing there alongside SDJ, but when SDJ is out or after he graduates, there's room at 2 for JJ/DB.

De'monte will handle some ball handling chores too. He's basically a bigger version of Ced.

I always thought if Ced were a couple inches taller he would be in the NBA. By his senior year he was top 3 in the A10 in points, assists, and steals. Very good player on both offense and defense, we absolutely collapsed when he got hurt.

Anthony was our last impact freshman to come in and show he was going to be someone special. What happened to the "I want to be A10 rookie of the year" battle between JJ and JP? I just didn't see it. I hope to be proven wrong with their talent. Would love to have some frosh come in and play with confidence right away and make an impact. Sounds like Buck is already thinking that way I like that. We need some toughness and brashness too much passiveness and timidity the last few years.

Most underrated Spider of our generation. Too bad he didnt have KAs supporting cast while he was here. Shame to have his career end the way it did.

Not sure who that guy is, but he also tweeted that the tournament sucks without LSU/Ben Simmons. Hard to take him seriously.
Not to mention that Providence and Maryland haven't been mentioned as serious players for him anyway.

At this point I take him to be a talking head wanting his few minutes of fame -- throw up enough garbage and you'll be right some of the time

While I hope Andre becomes a Spider, some of the other bigger guys we are recruiting look really good. OSC

I don't think this guy even qualifies as a talking head. he's an OSU hoops fan. I believe he's saying if this kid is playing somewhere else like Butler, Providence or Maryland (anywhere but OSU), he's going to feel sick because he thinks the kid is the next David Lighty.
no big deal.

Interesting reading brother's tweet (OSU offered) and mother's tweet, Richmond wants you, go where you are wanted, not where you are on the back burner

I hope I'm wrong, but there is no way I see Andre committing anywhere else but Ohio State. Hopefully we use this scholarship to find a quality big man

While this stinks for the Spiders, it was certainly not unexpected. Believe Aleem Ford may be coming for a visit. OSC

Well, I guess we don't have much of a shot now. The class is still very strong, hopefully we can find a good final player or two to make it really special.

I have some reason to believe we may not be out of the picture yet. Stay tuned...

I can only take so much, don't get my hopes up! Is Thad retiring, and now both Andre and Kaleb want to come here!

Can't explain, and I'm not saying he's coming here. I don't know. But I do know that we are still in the running.

Someone should tell him about the time Thad Matta got his ass kicked in the bowels of the Robins Center - who wants to play for that guy

Stay at home and play in the Big Ten with you brother or fly across the country to play in the A10 without him. Hmmm.
