2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - Wofford

Agree we have good receivers, but they had a bad game also. I only had the benefit of TV, but from what I could see, they were not exactly wide open all day.
They were open, wick just doesn't have the skill to get it to them....need to burn cams redshirt and switch it up or we won't win 4 games....

Talk of redshirt Coleman or not. If he saves a year, we still have the issue next year of him possibly playing behind Wick. So he saves a year and might be number 2 QB next year. I think we have to play now and play to win now. Who is best option right now? If yesterday is any indication, it seems obvious unless yesterday against Wofford is an anomaly. Play to win NOW with best QB. We still can get playoff bid, but 0-2 is a bad start with one of those to a preseason basement pick in Socon.

I’m not sure why someone as talented as Cam hasn’t left yet, probably could have been FBS by now. If I were him I’d get the hell out of here.

For the life of me I don't understand why they don't play at the same time. Go to a two back system that Clawson employed and make Wickersham the fullback. What a weapon he could be. Opposition wouldn't know what was coming at them with two guys that could throw and run. Our coaching staff is just too old school to go old school.

My concern is cam with RS then transfer....cam gives us the best chance to win...wick should be #2

Advocated this preseason. Opens so many options, but totally dependent upon a dominate O line. Time needed for the extra pass option. Not sure we are there yet. Very good, but not dominant O line so far.

Winston surprised me yesterday. O calls were so bland. Seemed uncharacteristic. Almost always throw in some wrinkles, but not yesterday. Total vanilla. Paid the price.

Edit: Game is played on the field. Do not mean to imply coaching was responsible for the loss, but definitely a contributing factor.

The Wofford coach knew he’d win when the score was 5-0 at the 12 min mark of the 2Q and his offense had -4 yards. We should’ve scored at least an additional 2TDs at that point were it not for our offensive ineptitude.Coach October is not responsible for throwing the ball with accuracy, zip and assuredness. He is not responsible for seeing the totality of the field and reacting with a modicom of mental acuity. He is not responsible for throwing outside the pocket while on the move which provides for a better view of open receivers.

The manner in which our offense played was demoralizing for the fan, casual observer, and most probably the players on both sides of the ball.An embarrassment. Its not that we lost but rather why and how we lost.

I have been to an immeasurable number of UR games since the age of 10(for 64 years).

The game yesterday was unequivocally the most painful to watch at any venue, home or away which I have ever witnessed over those 64 years.

The absence of Coleman is a Huseman decision.Plain and simple. His postgame comments bordered on illiteracy. To put Coleman in the game with 6mins remaining and down 2TDs is being blatantly oblivious to the obvious. It wasn’t fair to the kid either.

“…We knew we had to obviously have a couple scores, and we thought Cam could come in and give us a spark and kind of sling it around a little bit,” UR coach Russ Huesman said of changing QBs. “We had talked about it maybe just a touch earlier and made the decision to stay with Kyle…”

“…When Wofford went ahead 26-12 with 6:03 left, “we needed to move the ball quickly, and through the air,” said Huesman. Coleman entered...”

It almost seems like the decision to play him yesterday was made out of spite for Coleman.

You have a good batch of RBs, so why not put a gun slinger in also? Cam's ball has much more
zip and he has a quick release where Kyle as said earlier, is more of short dink and rarely does
he go vertical. I hope Huesman does not let his ego get to him, and hold Cam out.

There is no explanation for Huesman not having a 2QB system. Both are excellent in their situations where they are strongest! Don’t understand why UR coaches refuse to adapt to situations that are not their usual preferences. It would be a no brainer to make these changes rather than losing 🕸️🕷️🏈

Surprise surprise another slow start out of the gate by a RH coached team in front of a snooze fest crowd. Not at all surprising the guy who couldn't win with an NFL QB and 17 returning starters from 3 straight playoff teams 8 years ago, still has no clue how to run an offense or excite a fan base. Best case scenario is the Spiders will essentially will have to go 8-1 to make the playoffs again where we will get smoked on the road by a school that actually emphasizes football and didn't get off to a sluggish start. I'm sure well pat ourselves on the back for that one also.

The fact that a Division 50 women's soccer team (Richmond Ivy) draws better crowds than us at a 80 year old stadium we left tells you all you need to know about how much this schools cares about promoting our football program. Frankly its embarrassing and pathetic to see how little they care. Sure, rally around the team, go ahead and call me negative but this program has major problems that haven't and aren't being addressed to appease a bunch of wine and cheese admins who only care about giving off the illusion they care about winning.

All of this. MBB always has been and always will be my primary rooting interest. I used to be much more into Football, but the entire program now plays like the little engine that could mindset. 15 years ago this program won a Natty, we played and won a College Day, we have a great stadium, yet interest in the program continues to plummet. Maybe someone should ask why.

Apathy has hit me for sure. Some of it is that life has dictated other responsibilities ahead of watching UR football every Saturday, but as everyone else has said, the program just feels high-schoolesque and has not really registered on my list of potential things to carve out time for. It could be much more, but I think we've seen that Huesman caught lightning in a bottle with Cosh and the Cosh offensive guys for one season, and now we're regressing back to his norm.

Saturday was ugly. My QB take is this... during spring and camp, each QB's familiarity with the defense and the lack of hitting / game time pressure made their respective passing games close enough that Wickersham's running game, his upperclassmen status, and Coleman's option to redshirt, gave the edge to Wickersham. By most accounts, both played well and Colemen didn't different enough to unseat an incumbent given these circumstances.

Saturday, the offense was flat and unproductive, and it wasn't all Wickersham's fault. That said, Wickersham struggled with accuracy and reads (albeit some missed plays, including one pick, were the receiver's mistakes). Coleman provided a spark and an energy that rallied everyone. You could see it on the sideline and in the stands.

My guess is next week Coleman starts and if he goes 3-0 over the next 3 games, he's a lock to burn the shirt and he's our guy this year and the next 2. Anything less than 3-0 is a crapshoot, and I think preserving his shirt (for his sake) is most likely despite the transfer risk it might create.

There are likely discussions among Coleman,Winston and Huesman Jr. today.

Coleman practiced with the 2’s on Sunday.

I’m sure that Coleman is emphatic that he should be the starter given what he accomplished in 6 mins and what could he do in 60 mins.

He’s also likely to be emphatic that if he doesn’t get the nod he will definitvely red shirt, which he should.Huesman Sr may have trouble with this given his closeness to the LSU Wickersham.

I feel lucky to have been a student during our hayday years, playing P5 schools, beating Tech in the rain, Barry Redden, Walker Gillette, Barty Smith, Tangerine Bowl win....and later, being there in Chattanooga in 2008 in the middle of a 17 game win streak.
I'll go ahead and say it...The good ole days. Sorry that you young guys missed out on all that because Richmond football will never see that again.
Starts with our milk toast administration. It's all their fault for not giving a damn about sports.

Think inserting Coleman was 2 series too late. Wickersham 3 picks and a couple more batted down. Maybe most important QB stat is yards per attempt. So far in two games, 4.4 yds per attempt for KW = not good. Wofford definitely underestimated, they may turn out to be pretty good. Positive spin is that we only have one bad loss. Let’s go 8-2 the rest of the way

The Richmond Ivy are new and different. New and different can be pretty exciting.

Everything about our program is dull.
  • Dull administration.
  • Dull level of football where traditional rivals have left for greener pastures.
  • Dull gameday experience.
  • Dull scheme with running the quarterback as the primary option.
  • Dull, meandering interviews
  • Same ole' voices calling the action.
Administration keeps handing out contract extensions like candy so they seem to endorse all of the above. There's little point in fighting any of it because nothing will change. And there are too many other fun things to do on fall weekends in RVA.

I don't see how the tide is stemmed unless Huesman retires and we hire a really compelling replacement. That may be another decade from now.

Outside the box thought here. Fontel Mines. RVA ties, man can recruit. Hasnt been a coordinator, but sure he has connections to make a good hire. Recruited so many of Roccos top players.

My good old days don't go as far back as you, but I hear you...Our tailgate crew has been to almost every home game and quite a few road games over the past 25 or so years. We were just joking about being admonished by Aaron Corp's dad on the hotel shuttle to Duke about the hard "P." I was like sorry sir, I thought it was pronounced like the Marine Corp...he was upset, but probably less so from his son losing the starting QB job to the butt fumble guy. Those were the exciting days where "any given Saturday" we might come out with a win regardless of who we're playing.

As a counterpoint, through the aughts and early teens there were a lot of my classmates and underclassmen of mine going to the games. They're all gone now and there's no one in their 20's and 30's at the games...I'm not sure they're even aware what they're missing out on.

The good news, even though our football program (and athletic department) has become a retirement destination, is that Huesman is eligible for Medicare in January, so maybe he'll head on down to Florida and we can get someone to come in that's hungry for bigger and better things.

The irony is that UR is in a great position to hire the next Chip Kelly or Dave Clawson. So many young, innovative coaches come thru the FCS ranks. Problem is that if the coach was successful our AD would have to actually work and hire a new coach (Amazing how that seems to have worked out for JMU football and VCU basketball). Instead of being ambitious and taking a chance at something great we settle for easy, predictable, and safe. Same approach applies to the marketing of our program. I'm beyond apathetic at this point because we are much more likely to go down to D III or eliminate football completely than to institute any real ambitious changes. The game days have basically become a minor league baseball game with slim attendance, no students, the occasional parents using the afternoon for child entertainment, and nobody seeming to care about the final score as long as we participated/competed in an event.

Agree with all of this. I look at what the Flying Squirrels have done to draw fans. No one gives a rat's a** who wins a Flying Squirrels game but they turn out the fans because they make it a great experience for fans to want to be at and they promote themselves extremely well. Same with the Richmond Kickers, who coincidentally play at our old stadium.

We actually have an advantage over both of them as we have fans who actually care who wins our games and we have a beautiful venue versus the run down venues that they both play in. But for all of the reasons Mo mentioned, we are what we are. It is a conscious choice and to me it all starts with our athletic leadership setting a tone that does not demand excellence in the entire operation from coaching to marketing to tickets to gameday experience.

It is like Chick Fil-A vs. the customer experience you get a Burger King or McDonalds. Chick Fil A demands great customer service so that is what you get. Burger King/McDonalds don't so you get served by a bunch of people punching a clock and getting paid. That to me sums up our entire operation at the Robin's Center.

Hear you guys. Largely, but not completely, agree.

Spiders have 10 games, minimum, left this season. We are 0-0 in conference. Clinging to the ledge, but not jumping yet. Spiders have a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. Believe better days are ahead.

I respect that folks will point back to last year’s start and finish but you can’t keep flirting with disaster and relying on winning 8-9 straight games. Last year’s run makes this year’s start even more frustrating because it seems like this year’s team didn’t show up with a sense of urgency to start the season. We have yet to show up in two games and didn’t seem to
learn anything or make adjustments from last year’s early issues. The game day atmosphere (or lack of) was just the cherry on top.

Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week

Wofford (26-19 win at then-No. 14 Richmond)

The Terriers, picked eighth out of nine teams in the Southern Conference’s preseason poll, have opened the 2024 campaign with back-to-back road wins over 2023 playoff qualifiers (also Gardner-Webb on Aug. 31). Redshirt freshman Amari Odom passed for 219 yards and two touchdowns, while the defense had four interceptions, including cornerback Amir Annoor with a pair. Coach Shawn Watson’s squad has responded to an 0-9 start last season with four straight wins since last November.
