2023 March Madness

While I have no reason to really dislike UVA, I just can't root for them. And yes, they were very average this year, playing in an average ACC. They shouldn't have been a 4 seed and that just got validated. Brutal way to lose.

I am 1-1 already. Had Furman and West Va.

UVA has a great coach and mediocre talent.
Doesn't ever get the one-n-done athletic types. They all want/think they will be going to the NBA and probably feel that style won't showcase themselves. Plus Bennett's hair probably get gray quicker having to teach those guys his style of play.

Looks like my Aztecs are getting ready too follow the rest of the MWC down the March sadness drain again this season.
So my pick for the final may be happening in 2 days? Charleston over Furman...

Wasn’t just the ending. They sucked most of second half offensively and gave up way to many three pointers. Sounds familiar.

Hell of a game, it’s a shame the focus will be on the poor officiating in the final minute

I say this in jest...should we start running the Princeton offense again? It seems to be more successful than the Richmond "shoot a crazy three early in the shot clock/pass the ball around so much you have a shot clock violation or turnover" offense.

Princeton runs more of a George Mason/analytics offense these days... Shoot threes and short shots near the basket. They do still run some backdoor stuff too though.

Forgot all about our one time portal target Andrew Funk. Looking pretty damn good for Penn State. Looks like Roche but with better form and arc :):):). I guess the grass is always greener when playing for a different coach.
"Funk looking like JJ Redick out here!"

8-10 from 3. 27 points.

for some reason PSU coach played his best player all 40 minutes in a blowout win. Only subbed out 4 starters at the 2m mark up 21. Does he know there is another game in 48 hours?

Which half is Mooney good at?
nothing to do with Mooney. I just thought your "UVA has a great coach and mediocre talent" was odd.

I don't know UVA at all. why would they have mediocre talent with that coach, that school, in that conference?

Good question.

UVA has enough talent, and Bennett is great coach, but he is a little stubborn and gets too proud of his offense and defense. He makes very few adjustments, and his style of play kind of is what it is, regardless of opponent. Most of their games are close because of few possessions. Well, that might be great in the regular season many more times than not because they do win a lot of their close games, but in the dance, lesser teams can get hot and beat you. Furman didn't even need to be way hot from 3 yesterday, but they took enough 3s and made enough, going 10-28, while Bennett and UVA worried about being perfect on offense and getting the best shot possible while going only 2-12 from 3. Not sure how they expect to win only taking 12 3s, and only making 2. He needs to make some changes to his style. Play a little faster, shoot earlier in the clock sometimes, and shoot more 3s.

The way UVA played yesterday reminded me of exactly how we often play. When you by design don't try to step on the opponent's throat, and instead look for a perfect shot instead of a good one, this is what happens. You keep worse teams in the game.

There's nothing wrong with the style if you are able to be precise and you shoot a high percentage, and/or if your defense is SO good that the other team just can't score. But more often than not, those things aren't going to happen, and then what.

UVA has the athletes to dominate lesser opponents, but they give up that advantage in many ways because of their style. I feel like we also neutralize our advantages against lesser teams in the same way.

All that said, Furman is a very good team and that wasn't much of an upset. I would like to see Richey on our sidelines.

Man, Kennesaw was up 13 on Xavier with 10 minutes to go, but the Musketeers are now on a 15–0 run to take the lead.

Heard a pundit on TV mentioned two Kenpom stats in regards to past NCAA champs. Below numbers before Thursday's games so probably slightly different today and after tonight's games. The stats being Adjusted Offensive and Defensive team Efficiency%. The last 5 years champs at SEASON END have ranked #22 or below in both categories.

These teams have that going for them this year ....
Bama
Houston
Texas
UConn

Second one last 21 out of 22 champs total for both categories have ranked last than #49 (ex. 3 + 45, 22 +26) These teams have those totals ....
Bama 22 (19+3)
Houston 15 (11+4)
Texas 29 (18+11)
UCLA 25 (24+1)
UConn 25 (6+19)
Purdue 32 (9+23)
Kansas 36 (29+7)
Arizona 46 (42+4)
Creighton 42 (27+15)
St Mary's 48 (39+9)
Tenneessee 49 (47+2)

Bama and Houston numbers show the most balanced teams combined stats. Bama tougher schedule though. From what I saw this year plus two play-in games previous nights much more physical play is being allowed. Maybe favors muck-it-up solid defenses over higher ranked offensives?

Of course you can randomly add other numbers than 22 and 49 to get different results but was interested what those two showed.

Just did a quick review and UCLA fits the first category being now (22+1) and Purdue might too after tonight.
UConn now (4+17)

Great game for FDU….How did they even get in the tournament? 21-15, didn’t win conference or conference tournament

Yep, Merrimack is still ineligible as they transition from D-II. They won the NEC regular season championship in their first year of the transition but weren't allowed to play in the conference tournament (and then everything shut down for COVID anyway).

Won it again this year and were allowed to play in the tournament but couldn't get the bid even though they did win that as well. They'll be eligible to dance next year.

That choke collar around Painter's neck should be getting pretty tight. Iowa and Purdue battling it out for consistent early loser in the NCAA. You can bet on both of them like clockwork.
Did I hear Purdue has been a 1 seed 4 times, B10 regular season champ 10 times in the last 43 years but never to the final four in that time?

You could add Arizona with the "Reverse Spider", having loss to a 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15...
