1) Mooney - Poor messaging and lack of urgency. This seems to be a carry over from the last win last season to secure the A10 co-regular season. Sideline demeanor seems lax compared to when he has a good team that he thinks should win. Last year he was prowling sideline and on the ref ALL game every game.
2) Portal misses, I was too dumb to look up the old portal threads, but we seemed to land shooters/offensive guys as opposed to all around players this time. We had that one guy tartgetted as Dji replacement, plus Matt Knowling who were were in the final group for, but NIL money won the day I guess - who knows. Beagle looks solid, but not real steady with the ball. But Neako and Glou look very one dimensional as forwards so far.
3) Defense - just looks poor so far, can't keep guys in front of us. Wide open shooters. Shutter to see what good comp does to us.
4) Offense - still holding out hope here - but guys have to do it in games. I mean we have not been playing a very high comp level, so hard to see how it picks up against A10 competition. Hoping the lights goes on and something clicks, but just not great so far.

Worst "portal era" Mooney fears coming to light so far - inability to adapt to talent and adapt.

thinking 80s fan and PQ are holding out payments the way guys are playing.

To be fair, Moon has gone offense first via the portal pretty heavily the other years as well.

Roche - offense
Quinn - offense. Yes he was 7' but came with known limits to athleticism and quickness on defense, we wanted his scoring and passing.
Bigs - 2 way player.
King - offense
Harris - defense, but not expected to have much of a role, really carved out a corner 3 game and became a valuable reserve. But by no means was expected to have much of an impact for his 1 year.

This year
AP - offense
Nescovic - offense
GWIII - unknown
Beagle - offense
B. Artis - thought he'd be 2 ways, but has not shown any offense to date and as a smaller guard (which we already have) is not a huge improvement on defense over Hunt/Tyne, if at all.

Am I allowed to bring up big swinging D Bobby Durkin again? I was all over signing that guy. I think we felt Tanner was better which is a huge miss. Durkin great year for frosh & now 16/5/2/1 line early this year. I know an O guy too but really good O.

Also feels like Buchanan at GW & Maddox w the Goo Moos we couldn’t close. There will be hits & misses with hs and the portal but those 3 seemed more obvious to me.

Tyne scares me at point guard. He has a bad tendency of dribbling into traffic
and forcing things. Now 1v1 he usually is faster than the opponent. His overall decision
making on both ends of the court are questionable at times.

Hunt is struggling outside but has innate ability to drive and draw foul. Excellent defender who
keys in on passing lanes off the ball.

Beagle and Walz are too lazy on their passes and force too much. In fact accurate passing is a weakness of this
team.. Roche had two inbound passes either stolen or thrown out bounds. If he was our best option to get ball in,
we are in trouble.

AP, Tanner and Nescovic have not stood out enough to seal the 3 or 4 spot. AP is out of control at times and rather
shoot a 3 instead of attacking the lane. Nescovic is inconsistent with his shooting but smoothest of the 3. Tanner rebounds well for his height, has a good touch but needs to be more aggressive and attack lane at times.

Mooney needs to practice more against the zone since it gave us trouble last night. We need White back to give us more quickness at the guard position. Guys showed glimpses last night of what they can do but we need to quickly develop a more cohesive chemistry if we are going to do better than a .500 record.

Missed on Austin Ball, who didn't do much at GooMoos last year and for whom I don't see any stats so far this year (maybe he's out hurt?)

Matt Reed averaging 5 and 3 at Tulsa on poor shooting splits in 17m per game so far this year after averaging 4.5 and 4.2 last year as a freshmen.

Bigs - 2 way player.
I noted this in another thread, when I looked at some tape at Wofford, he was mostly a perimeter shooter. Actually will give some credit that he really developed into a great rebounder, good defender, and just a real tough minded player. But he actually seemed more one dimensional at Wofford but think he had an ACL tear earlier.

Yes, we seem to miss on the athletic front court players. We have one, with a bright red shirt sitting on the bench.
BURN THE SHIRT.

Watching Drake v UMiami in CofC Classic.

Drake would punish us by 25.They’re beating Canes by 10 with 4 min

How can Drake be so very good and we not so much?

Yes it's crazy what you can do when you go out and get an up and coming coach. Guess what, if he does really really well you lose him, but now your program has buzz and you get another up and comer. I actually suggested this as our strategy after seeing what JB did here following JW. But instead we went with slow decay with a few bumps in performance. Oh well, someone wake Hardt and tell him time to go home.

Nice review. I have a little difference of opinion with your number 2 above. I think this might be the best group of transfers we ever got BUT it's hard to say cuz CMs offense can't get anyone open...which he has pretty consistently done over the years. Beagle is fine but still doesn't require double teaming. To be honest (fair or unfair) CM was hoping Walz would get some offense and use Beagle as a backup. But Walz is so useless out there it's painful because he seems like a heckava good kid. Mooney has played smaller men than Neskovich at that spot ...at Air Force at least. Please get someone in there so the offense can run, THEN we'll see how good the shooters are. I said before that Neskovich and Beagle need to share that job. But it's tough to keep Walz on the bench because CMs not wanting to hurt someone's ego...he seems more apt to hurt the team as a whole than a single player.

During the offseason and knowing Walz would be starting center, I stated we probably could get 10 points a game out of him at center position. I don’t think that’s unrealistic. I also said he needed to look to shoot more as opposed to being primarily a distributor. I thought starting this year would make a difference. However, so far this year looks a lot like last year. He plays a lot with back to goal and there are shots, but he’s not looking. Unless things change, I’m seeing more productivity out of Beagle. I like his aggressiveness and desire to score.

Beagle has a move - back guys down and do pivot fakes, which mostly leads to little jump hooks, but occasionally can catch a guy napping and go left hand. His 8 dribbles to back a guy down remind me of Cayo a bit.

Walz doesn't have any go to post move. Seems like if he's flat footed with back to basket he wants to shoot a classic turnaround jumper, which needless to say, has fallen out of analytics favor. But he just doesn't look like Grant, TJ, Quinn etc did when they were looking to score and I think it's because he hasn't developed a single go-to shot down low..
