desire, tenancity, timing, positioning, strong hands and "mostly pursuit of the pumpkin".
some comments voice disagreement, but I'm totally on board with this. boxing out is totally overrated. jumping ability helps. but it's more about quickness in reaction to the direction of the rebound.
Sman seen this too live and on the other side. LOL Clark saying this If any coach can't get players to play with desire and tenacity. Possibly they are in the wrong profession.
If a P6 coach probably looking/getting athletic jumpers is sufficient for rebounding. These coaches know wasting their time teaching them to box out. Smart mid-major guy wants to get as much athletic talent also but might have to settle for players hopefully with aptitude to learn fundamentals .... like maybe boxing out?
And forget what Princeton did to ARI and Missou getting surprisingly many 2ndCHPTs, it was limiting them to 2 each game. Desire and tenacity might have helped getting those O boards but boxing out had to be an aspect Mitch has taught from day one at Princeton in limiting 2ndCHPTs. Don't believe they have the leaper Mooney has in Burton or even Bigs.
Here's basic stats with no analytics. Going by Kenpom below is where Tigers ranked nationally for DEF rebounding under Mitch.
2022-23 7th
2021-22 27th
2019-20 31st
2018-19 28th
2017-18 33rd
2016-17 24th
2015-16 45th
2014-15 21st
2013-14 3rd
2012-13 56th
2011-12 116th
Look I can't get in Mitch's head but after his first two years as coach seeing progression in defensive rebounding numbers might have made a priority improving boxing out fundamental .
Bottom line for me how is Mooney not able to teach his SMART/less athletic players the concept of boxing out? He even has these SMART individuals for usually 4 years. Is he looking at too much analytics missing what a basic stat tells you?
Without looking up got to think Spiders being ranked 54th this year to be best ever under Mooney? Bigs being best A10 rebounder probably the reason helping Tyler do the heavy lifting. What happens if Tyler doesn't return next year?
Possibly we hired the wrong ex-Princeton player as coach?
Though I know a few here will counter with they only have gone Dancing 2 times in 11 years under Mitch.
Princeton
Princeton University has reportedly been on the low end of coach salaries among Division 1 schools, though the salary of Mitch Henderson has remained shrouded in mystery. Before this season's excitement, Henderson was already the third-winningest coach in program history as of last year.
The head coaches of men’s teams at the Ivy League university make a rough average of $161,500. However, Henderson’s salary has not been publicly available.
Appreciate if someone could confirm Mitch's salary? Thinking it's not close to 1.3M. Been to Jadwin Gym and no Robins Center. Though more for me than to be labeled a gym. Maybe a miniature Carrier Dome?
