Time to uncork a bottle of Red and read that post about 50 times tonight.

And that’s not a shot at any of our players individual “toughness” before a poster tells me how dare I challenge the heart of any of our current or former players…it’s a just a fact that we’ve never rebounded under Mooney and frankly never recruited guys who are great rebounders. Instead of aggressiveness we typically tighten up down the stretch under Moon. Rant over…back to enjoying the tournament…wild results so far but fun to watch.

Princeton out rebounding Missouri including on the offensive glass. Great ball movement as you would expect but this Princeton team is tougher and way more aggressive than any of Mooney’s teams.
Indeed Captain they are and stats show been great at defensive rebounding throughout Henderson's time at Princeton but went crazy tonight with 16 O boards. Seeing a 19-2 2nd CHPT ad tonight. Never would that accomplishment happen under Mooney. And Arkansas big comeback to upset Kansas. Why? Good defense and 16 O boards producing 15-2 2nd CHPT ad.

Watching Houston Auburn it’s not basketball its a street fight. Constant slapping and bumping defense is ruining basketball. The officials can’t call all the fouls, too many, but when they do make calls it very erratic and inconsistent.

The game had 45 made baskets and 47 fouls called. Crazy!

Hasn’t Grant Golden shown himself to be a pretty good rebounder in G league?

Obviously Burton has been a strong rebounder from day 1. The point is well taken, we basically have a culture of softness and finesse. If you watch St. Mary's those guys are physically/mentally tough, and I think they recruit to that and the coach instill that. Our system can be pretty and looks good when working, but it seems like we need to have the better talent and a really really player led team to make it work. And that is a talking point Dutcher uses at SDSU: Player lead teams are better than coach lead teams. BUT, coaches need to provide that push when you don't have that. So Nelson did not turn out to be KA or Gilly for this season. Adapt, provide the changes, motivation and strategy.

I think it will be interesting to see what Dayton does this offseason. I think I saw a Dayton insider float the possibility that Grant will transition to a different AD function. He has done wonderful job recruiting, but he has been stinking it up. They get a good coach and they should be going to NCAA's - they should have a program like St. Mary's, SDSU, VCU. We can too, but we need to sweep the board with lazy Jabba, settling PQ, and Mooney. So we will muddle along. I will be excited for our off season pick ups, and hopeful for next year, but the culture of comfort and building for the not so near future will remain.

Exactly and Burton would have been a good designated player going for O boards. Just like hopefully Bigs is that guy next season if Mooney can make an adjustment. Maybe a billboard suggesting Mooney do that might do the trick? :)

Good post 23. And about STM. Like you said they recruit height but averaged defensive rebounding rank 7.6 last 7 years nationally. And when you don't even attempt to get an O board the coach ain't instilling crap. We prioritize recruiting big men to hang around the foul line.

Unless transfers come in this team going to be 6'5" and under heavy. Of course it wouldn't be bad if we had more than one proven 3PT shooter. :(

Maybe we have had a bunch of fierce rebounders for 18 years but Coach’s philosophy/scheme has effectively hidden that. In Grant’s case I know we asked him to stretch the defense and not always crash the boards. But for example, in our entire post season run last year (A-10 and Ncaa) Grant had over 5 rebounds just once (Dayton) and I know Burton did have some good rebounding games during that stretch. Watching these tournament games you see defensive intensity ramped up and not many of these normally potent offensive teams is having a lot of success from 3 in particular. Seems crazy not to instill and recruit to a system that gives you at least an option when shots aren’t falling but we’ve all known this for almost 2 decades and I know folks are tired of hearing the same laments with no hope of change.

Sounds like VCU’s philosophy under Shaka and Slick Willy.

Did I hear Purdue has been a 1 seed 4 times, B10 regular season champ 10 times in the last 43 years but never to the final four in that time?

You could add Arizona with the "Reverse Spider", having loss to a 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15...
Both are crazy stats. B10 is always overrated except MS. AZ has a couple Champs in that mix though too.

Guess this thread as good as any…I’d buy these shorts in a sec…what’s the story w guy who tweeted…and where can I get?…jealous…

He had one of the biggest college basketball podcasts (Titus & Tate) with a guy named Mark Titus (walkon at Ohio State from 2006-2010). Podcast just came to an end and they went separate ways (one went to Barstool, other did not). Fun guy to follow on Twitter. Knows ball and is funny, just my two cents

When I was in school, they would sell the old uniforms for $5. I remember grabbing Stapletons old jersey and some others. Where they are now I don't know.
My senior year (2016) the bookstore was selling Tim Hightower tshirts. They were $7 and were only sold in size small. They may still be there

Here ya go...$70.

Who got the last rebound against Syracuse?

Here ya go...$70.

not sure that XXXL short-shorts is a good look for me while working on my out-of-style midrange game in the driveway.

to me, Burton and Bigelow show that fierce rebounding is recruited. the philosophy/scheme doesn't limit those two. hopefully Mooney sees the benefit and keeps targeting guys like them.

problem is that those fierce rebounding guys are rarely great shooters. if they are, they're going HM.

side note ... how fun is it to watch a guy like Oscar Tshiebwe?! one can dream.

Jimmy Shields?
I was trying to figure out this line from the ad.
"Mike Hopkins secured the rebound and Blair clinched the victory with a free throw."

I was like was Michael Hodges in the game?
No, so Syracuse missed a 3 pointer, Mike Hopkins offensive rebound and then Blair gets free throws?

desire, tenancity, timing, positioning, strong hands and "mostly pursuit of the pumpkin".

some comments voice disagreement, but I'm totally on board with this. boxing out is totally overrated. jumping ability helps. but it's more about quickness in reaction to the direction of the rebound.

A man can dream. But I think we all know Lia wears the pants in the Mooney household and she likes to live in Richmond.

Not disagreeing with anything said, but boxing out is a fundamental and it certainly cant hurt.
