VCU game thread: PT 0-0 and CM and team won the one that mattered last year

Hats off to ur for the win last night. We were at St. Joe's last night and toward the end of our game nobody in the VCU group (there were about 150 there) was watching the game. EVERYBODY was watching their phones and the ur score. Everyone was cheering on the spiders to beat SLU. Good job.

See you Friday....oh wait....never mind.

I thought Costco closed at 8:00pm or is it BJ’s now?

While this still feels like a Pete Gaudet game I’ll take 0-0 going in over 8-23.
I feel like we all know what would have gone down with Mooney leading the charge, cause we've seen that script over and over again, particularly at Costco. I suspect a similar script occurs with PT regardless but I am at least willing to entertain that we probably have a slightly better chance of a positive outcome with PT right now.

One observation I had at the SLU game was the how the other assistant coaches turned around to the crowd when we made our run and were encouraging the crowd to get up and get more involved. Also is it coincidental the Jaynel had a breakthrough game? Good or bad, when a leader is missing, the air in the room is going to change and what I saw was guys (coaches and staff) feeling a bit more loose against SLU.

I think the defense was dreadful throughout, at least the lack of pressure on the dribbler. And the inability to stop guys off the dribble. In particular Yuri on several occasions just dribbled and dribbled with no pressure before whipping a pass or taking his man off the dribble. That needs to change.
yeah, never leave your guy to help on Yuri. he'll find that guy every time. make Yuri have to score from inside the arc.

We usually have challenges at VCU. We played from behind most of the game earlier this season at RC and it only got worse in the second half. I believe it’s critical we don’t repeat that scenario tomorrow. We need to come out of the blocks strong and hang with them or lead for most of duration. It’s hard to fathom a second come from behind in one week like we did vs St L.

Everything is out the window for this game with Peter Thomas in charge.

Prediction.

Mooney zoom calls team in locker room and gives a win one for the gipper speech.

Burton plays like an NBA player and goes for 20 on 40% shooting from 3.

Nelson comes off bench and plays like the PG we all think he can be. 12 points. 4 assists. 1 turnover.

Grace. Plays like MFG. knocking down 3s and backing guys down in post. Scores 16.

Bigelow. Rebounds. He gets 14 rebounds and hits two 3s.

Roche and Quinn continue to struggle. But doesn’t matter. Peter Thomas magic continues.

UR - 74
VCU- 67

Very conservative scenario 😜, but it might just work out that way.

This was particularly shocking. There was no resistance at all. "Stop the dribble" is something you scream at 8-year-olds who are just learning how to play defense. I was yelling it all night at this game, which is ridiculous.

Well Section 9 just took the Stub Hub plunge and will be in Section 4 tomorrow night which if their lovely seating chart diagrams are correct is behind the Spider bench. PT headed for 1-0 and me headed for 2-1 for games live in attendance at the STU.

See u tomorrow night …

This might be the least interest we've ever had on the boards for a VCU game. Guess we need VT4700 on here to stir up the activity.

Good to see a few of u going at least. Don't know about Trap's prediction since he thinks we always play VCU close but hey why not. Spread seems fair.

Viewed PT pregame presser and I thought JOC was about to ask him why they do so poorly vs. VCU. Alas it was a question about struggles on the road in general. Oh well good try John maybe when we hit 30 losses in the Moon man era. It would have been a lot to ask PT that going into 1st game and never Mooney tho. Feels like Big swinging Pete just falling on the sword and taking the L for Mooney here, but hopefully we surprise coming off the emotional W and having some pride from getting punked at home by the Rams.

I'll be at costco tomorrow night, looking for Pete Thomas' first win against our crosstown rival and some free samples. Go Spiders.
Smart move by you, buying season tickets to vcu games and then selling all the ones to other games but keeping these. I’m surprised no vcu fans have ever figured out a way to do this in the Robins Center.

Game day! Funny to think that a win by the Spiders likely assures that the A10 is a one bid league. Spiders can play better than they did the first time around and hoping to see some more good fortune. But Spiders will have to be ready for pressure when bringing the ball up court (which oddly they did not seem prepared for in game 1) and will have to play much better D than last game. Looking forward to it. Go Spiders!

According their board, some have.

yeah - a couple guys sit in section 10 across the aisle from me in section 9 .. one of them comes a fair amount of UR games and roots for the Spiders except when VCU is the opposition - nice guy.

A win against VCU would be extraordinary but even more important winning our last two vs St Joe and GMU is vital to stay in the top 9.

Everyone knows I've done it for years. I've made money on them every year, except one COVID year.

This year I'm up a bit, even after giving my tickets to one game to the ur fan who has the seats next to mine. Nice guy. We got to talking at the VCU game and he said he would be interested in buying them some games. He texted us later, saying he needed them for a game. I gave him the tickets for free. I'm in Section 7, in a low row. That is right behind the visitor's bench. At VCU those seats would cost you a $10K/yr donation on top of the ticket price ($450). It is strange to figure which games are going to sell. I usually set my prices high, and drop them a bit as the games get closer. For some games, the tickets just sell fast at the higher price.

Most of the time I think mine are being bought by someone from the visitor's team. Before electronic transfer, I could see who bought them because I had to ship them via UPS. Now, there is no way of telling. I just click the Sell on StubHub link. All I have to do is set the price and collect the money. I do the same for my extras at VCU. But, I make a nice profit on those every year, if you don't include my donation, which I have to make anyway to keep my regular seats.

As for the game tonight, who knows? I really think that it comes down to which teams show up. Both have good games and bad. VCU has been playing some really tough defense in the past couple weeks. However, we lost to two conference teams when the defense did not show up and we shot poorly on offense.

Where I disagree with those here and on RamNation is that it will be a close game. I think it will be a blowout, one way or the other. One team shows up and the other caves. If I was a betting man, I'd take VCU and give the points. Of course I would...

A win at BJ’s would be nice. Hopefully we don’t wear red.

Hi All, I'm back from my hiatus. Partially due to Richmond performance, but mainly due to work and personal things I had to take care of. Here are my thoughts on VCU and how we could come out with a shocker tonight.

Where VCU is Strong

A Balanced Squad Offensively:
VCU doesn't have a "star" putting up 15+ a game, but they don't really need it. They have key contributors in their starters and off the bench that put teams in a difficult position. Ace Baldwin of course stands out as their top scorer and relative vet, but his shooting has been pretty poor, particularly in A-10 play (29.5% from 3 shooting 3 per game). But this is made up for by Shriver shooting just as many 3's off the bench and hitting 47.5% of them in A-10 play and Johns and Deloach having their way inside. When we played them last month, we felt that balance, HARD, with 5 double digit scorers. Last game, Jamir Watkins got hot off the bench, but he's gone cold in A-10 play. If it stays that way, we defend well against the 3 and stay close enough on the boards, we have a shot. Those are big ifs.

Defensive Stalwarts: VCU ranks 25th in the country in PA/G at 62.8, while also holding the 8th best DRtg in the country. They've held this form in A-10 play for PA/G, but some of their defensive numbers have regressed a bit, though they're still strong. They have extremely active hands and collect almost 9 steals a game (2nd in A-10), but their turnover numbers are more middle of the road in A-10 play. Rhoades' squads are always built from their defense and it's shown this season. They give up very few shots in a game both inside and outside the arc so we have to make the most of them. Last time that did not happen, particularly for Burton and Bigelow. I think with better shooting performances we can keep it closer

Where VCU is Weak

Rebounding and Free Throw Shooting:
It's really hard to knock this team. Are they the most prolific scorers in the A-10? No, but they're in the upper half. The rebounding stat being near bottom in the A-10 is a bit misleading. They still on average outrebound teams, but that's not every game. If we are able to flip the script or get close, that's huge for us. They make their shots despite not taking a ton of them, and that means, not a lot of offensive rebounding to be had, plus they steal the ball and cause turnovers so not a lot of defensive rebounds either. However, their one achilles heal is their Free Throw shooting, at just 70%. Baldwin is one of the best Free throw shooters in the country, but Johns and Deloach are both at 65% and 50% respectively. I'm not saying hack them if they get the ball, but consider making it tough for them down low, even if that means putting them at the line. That could give us an advantage.
