The Official Retain Coach Mooney Thread

I keep reading the A10 is a one bid league. If we're going to play in a one bid league, why don't we at least play in a league we might have a chance of winning. We moved up what 15 years ago because we wanted to have a shot of at-large bids. We've had exactly ONE at large bid during that time. I'm thinking that if we had stayed in the CAA, we probably could have had half a dozen NCAA tournament appearances during that time.

The A10 has basically been a 3-5 bid conference every year since we joined. It's our fault that we haven't been good enough to get one of those bids often enough, not the A10's fault.

Right now the A10 is trending toward a two bid league. It would most likely be a one bid league if VCU wins the A10 tournament or falters in the next two weeks. Jeff Goodman talked about it at halftime of the Bonas/Mason game on Sunday. It will be a two bid league if VCU keeps winning and another team wins the A10 tournament. Davidson could keep winning and it might even be a three bid league. The team would not have a shot at an at-large even if it was a seven bid league.

My guess is that somehow we end up being a 2-3 bid league, even if it's not entirely deserved. Most likely 2. Much like the other leagues, I suspect that the A-10 has enough cache that the league won't be totally snubbed come tournament time.

We need VCU to win from now until the final.

I could live with that, unlikely to happen as we have already seen teams from the bottom half of the standings knock off those near the top. Obviously, when UR and VCU play it is always a rival game and the adoration to that already occurred. Yes, VCU needs to keep winning as does Davidson for the league to get two bids this year. It was an issue a year ago but more so this as to OOC performance. So many young teams this year in our league and they learned during OOC and now are all better.

This is our 18th season in the A10. We've had two at-large bids since joining the A10. Wainwright's team in got one in 2004.

I guess I was thinking mooney era. Regardless how many bids the A10 gets, I can't help but think we could have won the CAA more than twice during his time. Certainly his recruiting has been more on a CAA level anyway. Just my opinion though.

I thought our president at the time of joining the A-10 said it was to compete with institutions that had the same geographic student body demographics as us, not to get at-large bids. :D
Not that he would have known what an at-large bid was...

We could have won the CAA a few times while recruiting CAA talent to the A10. But had we actually been in the CAA, we would have been recruiting Big South-caliber talent, so the problem would have remained the same.

I think you guys are aiming too low if you go to the Patriot league. I really think the Big South is a better fit. Not sure if you would be able to compete in the CAA.
OK. I said I wouldn't ever post again here, but I am. Please get rid of this Tickman. Enjoy life my friends and be well.

Not to mention the better chance at an NIT bid.

I cannot understate how important the Fordham game is to Coach Mooney. If Richmond wins this game, it will help cement Coach Mooney's position at the end of the season. Unfortunately, the opposite may be true as well.

I like your Gallows Humor Gallipoli. I do fear that in the name of the might Paul Queally, Hardt is forced to think like this. Well look how Mooney bounced back against Fordham after the VCU debacle. And shoot, Fordham just beat URI. If Mooney can beat Fordham without Fore, Buck, Sherod, and Godwin that will really say something. I think with the new practice facility he can really pick it up next year. Agree Paul? Paul: Certainly.

Check Mate.

I think we get two in this year. If Davidson and VCU win out, it would be a lock. More likely is that VCU is a solid bubble team and Davidson has work to do.

But next year will be different. The A-10 will be back to 3-4 bids. I read an article yesterday that mentioned that two or three A-10 teams could be getting votes in the early polls next year. This conference is going to be stacked. There are not a lot of seniors out there. If everyone plays a tough OOC schedule and wins a few, the conference will be back to where it was a couple years ago. It should be interesting.

Quick drink more kool-aid. You are coming around. The future is bright. #M4L
However, if we lose the Fordham game, I will be concerned about the rush to judgment.

This is exactly why Mooney needs to go. The “we’re just young” argument doesn’t work when the rest of the league is young and they’re already better than you...

Tonight is the night this team can seize the moment and make their own destiny. Tonight Coach Mooney once again proves that he is a very good coach and that he should be back next season. This will be one of Coach Mooney's best coaching efforts.

After watching tonight's Division 3 basketball game, this whole thread has lost all it's humor .

Feel sorry for Neubauer, Mooney not so much.

This was his typical down the stretch job. He was inspiring confidence in the guys by having the "I'm about to crap in my pants look"
Nonsense. This was Coach Mooney's finest hour. The last 8 minutes of games are his time to shine.
He is very good at math. And practicing. Practicing math.
He understands that with a 13 point lead and 6 minutes remaining, you can allow a 17-3 run, as long as you score on your last possession.
It's the knowledge that no lead is safe that keeps us from changing the channel. Predictable chaos. Always compelling.
We have in our midst a master craftsman at his peak. Please don't underestimate how fortunate we are.

I heard a recent discussion about the statistical analysis that Coach Mooney undertakes. It is called the 5 minute rule. If this team does not have a sufficiently large lead with 5 minutes left, there is a high probability this team will lose the game at the end. Tonight's game was a classic example. Coach Mooney understands that this team will hit a wall at the 5 minute mark. He is using the concept of Big Data to improve his team's outcomes . This is cutting edge stuff.

Coach Mooney understands his team so well, he can use the parts of the puzzle to maximum effect. That is good coaching. I thought the team's response to the triangle and 2 and the box and 1 defenses was outstanding. This team showed us what they could accomplish. They definitely need more conditioning. Did anyone notice the mass substitutuions? It reminded me of "the Posse" when he would bring in a whole new team. Very impressive.

If you are speaking about Cooper, he's a toad! He put the brakes on the university admitting Virginians and we are now suffering the results! A quickly aging elderly local alumni fanbase. A fact that our state rivals love to make fun about us!

Amazing. The team has come together and is playing its best basketball of the season. It made 2/3 of its shots today, as it beat Lasalle. The Spiders are in 8th place and are surging. Today, the Spiders broke a barrier. They did not wilt at the end and will fight for themselves and their coach.

Wow! 8th place! How many teams are in the conf? Oh, 14.

If they keep surging maybe he'll get that elusive 1st or 2nd place finish. Haven't seen that in 14 yrs
