The Official Retain Coach Mooney Thread

Amazing. The team has come together and is playing its best basketball of the season. It made 2/3 of its shots today, as it beat Lasalle. The Spiders are in 8th place and are surging. Today, the Spiders broke a barrier. They did not wilt at the end and will fight for themselves and their coach.
There was a time when 8th place would be an embarrassment and unacceptable, but the way you framed your post you made it sound like it's a positive.

Candide, is that you? Does Cunégonde still share your view?
Ah reality must set in at some point. Several pages back, I really thought there was no way Coach Mooney retains his position. Now, I am not so certain. I am sure that this billboard thing has inspired this team-his team- to break through its barriers. Until the LaSalle game, this team constantly wilted late in the game, every time. Now they broke through that wall. The group dynamic will be interesting, especially if they beat Mason. This is after all, March Madness. Anything can happen.

Oh great! Thanks a lot!:(

Now “What a day, What a day! For an Auto Da Fe!” Is stuck in my head.

Coach Mooney has a way of getting his teams to peak at the end of the season. He will be telling this team to believe in themselves. That no one else believes in them. He will tell them to fight like heck, like they did in the LaSalle game. If they beat Mason, watch out VCU.

Tie for 8th, gents. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Great things, indeed!
Broc, serious question. You seem very rational, though the idea that you are boycotting going to Richmond games is seen by a certain contingent on the board as anti player and program. I just see it as anti Mooney.

My question is: If we were to win the A10 tournament this year, I know it doesn't seem likely - but you could get a strange brew of things occuring (Grady re-injures his knee, VCU shoots 10% and bows out, etc.- combined with a super soft A10), would you come back to games? How about next year if we are somehow able to get by with a porous defense but best class ever can score enough to win the A10 tourney? Would that be enough to convince you to come back, or have you seen enough - and this is just fools gold in a longer recurring pattern?

It's a shame that we have to play powerhouses like Longwood, Oral Roberts, & Hampton so early in the season. Maybe if we played them towards the end we might be able to beat teams that used to be considered a given. Thank goodness for Coppin State.

Are u kidding me???? Peak at the end of the season???? We havent even made an A10 final in many years. You Mooney lovers are such blowhards.

Father, you are not an alum correct? You have/had a child that went to Richmond, If I recall. I would call you a fairly neutral observer. I know I have started to follow the team where my son attends, and I am very even keeled on evaluating the situation.

That team I follow has underachieved this year, but I will say the coach in his second year is really good at attacking the roster and has some really good re-inforcements coming in next year that should address some weaknesses and plug in graduating players.

That is one thing that really has been bad over the years with Mooney. The entire board knows we need X position next year, and Looney never lands the guy we need in form or transfer or grad transfer. Finally, finally got one in TJ, and likely in Francis. But two impact transfers in 14 years. COME ON. And don't go to the admissions excuse. Tarrant and JB played this game well. This is not something new, transfers, yet Mooney had no interest in participating as it became a huge trend in college basketball.

Thanks. A couple of clarifications before I answer your questions. I'm not boycotting going to games. If someone were to offer me a ticket I would go. I would cheer loudly and positively, and would not participate in any derogatory chants. I hate that I'm wasting my kids' clubs. I haven't gone this year but I was at a handful last year. I watch or listen to almost every game. I'm definitely not anti-player or program - I love our team. The players certainly don't notice I'm missing. I don't even consider myself "anti-Mooney." My stance is simple. I'm not going to spend any money, or advertise through IMG on anything basketball-related.

I believe the AD is telling us one thing: "Our goal is to compete for championships and go to the tourney" while doing another: Continuing to employ a coach who just doesn't. The facts I laid out in my expectations post are just that - facts, not opinions. He is simply the least successful coach in his 14th+ season in the nation in a multi-bid league (and most of the coaches from the one-bid leagues have been to the tourney more recently and/or more often). We are in our longest drought since before we ever made the tourney. I'm not going to give them my money while they're saying one thing and doing another. I am too small-potatoes for it to make a difference, I know - and I don't know how many fans would have to do likewise to have an impact. I believe our AD has the attitude towards our fans espoused in my signature.

If we were to win the tourney next month, I would probably come back. And you can bet I'll be cheering like crazy when we're playing in the first four in Dayton. (Man, just imagine the scrambling by the committee if a team with a losing record steals the A10 AQ.) The odds of this happening is obviously close to zero. If it does, Mooney will be back through the end of his contract, and it will likely be extended. This was the best thing Keith Oddo said in his interview, "If we win, all of this goes away." And I suppose a lot of it does.

But here's the thing - it is fool's gold. Hoping to steal the A10 championship from a low seed isn't a sustainable strategy. And more importantly, it doesn't rise to the level of "competing for championships." I'd much rather have a team that's frequently in the mix for a double bye. Playing marquee OOC opponents. Basically all 14 teams are "competing" for the tourney championship. Be one of the teams competing for the regular season championship year in, year out. You can be snake-bit in the playoffs, but you'd actually have a chance at an at-large bid. If Mooney built something sustainable like that, yeah I'd be back. The only thing he's been able to sustain is his own career.

Since you say we are peaking at the right time, what is your prediction for the final four regular season games? Not the games just the results, anywhere from 4-0 to 0-4. How well do you actually know this team?

Results are not as important as effort. The effort in practice, the effort in games and the effort of the coaches are most important. Free Mooney to coach.

Who's holding him back?

"Mooney to coach (for) Free" - now that I could get behind.

so you're okay if we go 0-4 as long as we play with good effort?

The sign on I95 suggested he be freed to coach and it caused an uproar.

This team has come through the fire. They are melding together. The chemistry on this team is excellent. This team will take on the personality of its Coach. Character will shine through in the Mason game.

This guy is comical. Joined board in 2017. No wonder he has not idea just how inept CM has been. “Will take on the personality of their coach”... hahahaha they have been doing that everytime they come out scared shitless or choke down the stretch of a game. Thats the personality of nearly every mooney coached team the past eight years.

Really? Ced? Brothers? Kendall? TJ? ShawnDre? Scared? Jacob? Grant? Come on. Was Nick scared when he stepped up as a freshman and hit a go ahead 3 in the final minute of the semifinal tourney game against VCU? Stop criticizing our players.

I was at that game. Were you? Good wide open shot by Nick. Then Lewis from vcu comes right back and not afraid to take very difficult 3 on us to tie. Then we actually do play scared last possession with what Mooney calls, running no O, everyone including vcu knows what’s coming and we get a fadeaway contested shot by Shawndre. Then vcu does their thing in OT. Terrible crushing memory there, thanks.

Character is vital. This team must learn from its mistakes. They must never give up, no matter how long the odds, no matter who says they can`t. Character leads to strength, which leads to success.

I’m getting G onto my payroll. The Motivational Poster Production Team needs an infusion of new talent.
