The Official Retain Coach Mooney Thread

Character is vital. This team must learn from its mistakes. They must never give up, no matter how long the odds, no matter who says they can`t. Character leads to strength, which leads to success.
Its been 14 years, where is that character building success? OMG you guys are hilarious.

Have you been roasting marshmallows again?
To quote that wise sage of the forums, UR Mite
“What a day, What a day! For an Auto Da Fe!”
You obviously have been roasting the cheeba for a very long time. CM must have some really good stuff.

Really? Ced? Brothers? Kendall? TJ? ShawnDre? Scared? Jacob? Grant? Come on. Was Nick scared when he stepped up as a freshman and hit a go ahead 3 in the final minute of the semifinal tourney game against VCU? Stop criticizing our players.
Nothing is criticizing the players... the original post was about the "personality of the coach" but yea your post shows how much talent Mooney has had and underachieved with. Name me one game when UR blew out a decent team in the first half of a home game... ONE TIME in the last 5 years. Never. And how many times did we blow big leads at home. The coaches personality has always been tentative and scared and that's how his teams have played.

I was at that game. Were you? Good wide open shot by Nick. Then Lewis from vcu comes right back and not afraid to take very difficult 3 on us to tie. Then we actually do play scared last possession with what Mooney calls, running no O, everyone including vcu knows what’s coming and we get a fadeaway contested shot by Shawndre. Then vcu does their thing in OT. Terrible crushing memory there, thanks.

That game was peak Mooney. Lost a lead, got killed inside, ran a terrible last possession where the player of the year didn’t touch the ball, got a T in overtime for calling a time out we didn’t have, have a player on the active roster participate in a halftime game, lose to VCU when it really counted.

Buck was also our best player in that game, but we’d be better this year without him.

Rhode Island won 24 games and won an NCAA tourney game 2 seasons ago, and we were up 31-18 at halftime and won by 11. How about Northen Iowa 3 seasons ago? They won 23 games and also won an NCAA tourney game. We were up 11 on them at the half and won by 15. Or, Davidson 4 seasons ago? They won 24 games and made the tourney. We were up 15 at the half and won by 26.

Sure, we have blown some leads down the stretch in some games, but guess what else we have done? We have routed some good teams and we have also come back against some good teams. Funny how some of you never mention that.

Father spider, thank you for your honest and unbiased evaluations of the state of UR basketball and Mooney. The only ones continuing to support Moon are the access craver nation, or otherwise attached. We saw a few more of these types get a pulse when the billboard went up, then quickly retracted to their crevices. With Tarrant and JB, you always felt the team had great opportunity to achieve and play to or above their potential. Just the opposite with mooney.

The end result is still the same.

Its sad to see a fan base be so complacent. As a sports fan all of my life I was never apart of such complacency until i started following UR sports 8 years ago when my daughter went there. The billboard is a great thing IMo because it shows that this fan base actually has a pulse, where there were many times I didn't think it did. Maybe Spider basketball will be relevant someday or maybe it will continue to be meaningless.

I'm a little worried some of our posters may give themselves an ulcer trying to convince 4700 to abandon his defense of Mooney.
No ulcers here. Coach Mooney is a very good coach. Keep up the good work. The future is bright. The players are getting better every day. They are making a run. If UR beats GMU, I fear for VCU.

Fatherspider, welcome back. You were roasted on here for years for very forcefully pointing out the flaws in Mooney's coaching abilities. You were dead on. Please keep commenting. We need more fans like you, a lot more.

If he beats GMU and VCU, you guys are stuck with him.

He can lose both, and still be the coach. He has convinced Hardt to let him ride out the next two years. He has convinced him of the current talent which he recruited. I quote, "give me until Gilyard graduates, I will show you what I can do." Mark my words.... 20 game winner next 2 years. Mooney gets new contract.

My predictions: Mooney is right to say we have a young team... (we will continue to be cyclical, lets get real it's U of R basketball). Next year we will win 20+ games, go to the NIT and all will be right with the world (not with this board). In two years we make the dance. So either sell your tickets to some new fans or get on board and turn that frown upside down.....Heard it here first!

Your prediction from last year. You suck at predictions.

True, but so does most of this board. So, I'm off by a year or so. At least you took the time to search!!! Buck gone, Sherod injured all part of the conversation. Mark my words again....20 games next year, deep down inside you know it!
The number of wins does not matter, only the day to day improvement. At the end of every practice and game, the players should ask themselves whether they are better today than yesterday? The answer is yes. All must agree that they have improved, individually, and as a team. They are hungry. They want to win. That is what counts.

In all honesty, with the group coming back next year in terms of players, do you think a new coach would also win 20 games next year?

Personally, I can see us winning 20 games. I’m pumped about our squad next year! However, I’ve seen the deficiencies in Mooney’s coaching over the years to also believe a new coach will get more out of next year’s squad than Mooney can.

If he makes the dance in 2 years (and I can't believe I'm saying he'll still be here...it's unfathomable) then let some sucker school take him off our hands.

If we don’t win 20 next year (which should be a given with 5 returning starters and virtually all your scoring from the prior year) can you agree that we need a new plan?

Don’t you mean “ 20 game winner total over next 2 years. Mooney gets new contract.”

All must agree that they have improved, individually, and as a team. They are hungry. They want to win. That is what counts.
A) Asssumes facts not in evidence. 6-7 ooc, 6-8 IC. So roughly the same. But better over last 7 games.
B) We don’t all have to agree in spite of your assertion. This isn’t Russia.
C) Not sure “what counts” you mean, being hungry? Wanting to win? Actually winning is what counts, at least quantitatively.

BTW, 57% chance you agree with all of this, you still have me guessing day to day.

Coach Mooney will have this team ready to defeat VCU. The effort and the preparation is there. Believe in yourselves, overcome the odds. Be strong in the knowledge that your coach is behind you.
