This is a super point, I have watched coaches at other programs I follow - and like Bennett they take responsibility and speak to the disappointment and what needs to improve or change. Mooney hides are regurgitates the same lines. Or when one time JOC asks a tough question reacts like a baby. I get this year sucks for the players with Covid and the injuries have hurt us. Just a screwed up year in college hoops, but the bigger malaise for longterm with Richmond basketball is Mooney. I think we will have some pretty decent talent next year, especially if we can just land one big man transfer or Cayo or Golden return - but not going to be super optimistic for anything more than a Mooney 2-3 year rebuild.Yep. I'm not going to go full on saying he was lying but he certainly was being generous with the truth. What gets me about Mooney is that literally ANY time something is wrong in the program, he just disappears, doesn't give media interviews, unless it is a carefully scripted (no question and answer) release.
When things are great (like after the Kentucky win), Mooney is all over talking to everyone. Again this comes back to character and leadership. Being a leader is easy when things are going well, but your really good leaders show their mettle when times are tough. Mooney hides/disappears during tough times, it is who he is.
Contrast this to Tony Bennett and how he deals with adversity and you will see how a great college coach handles adversity vs. how Mooney handles it.
I will be very interested to see what happens with high school basketball in CT this season. Games are starting next week. Not one shutdown through a couple weeks of practice that I know of. OF COURSE , the big difference is that no testing is occuring that I know of. Guessing not much interference will come of it.
The governing board for h.s sports OK winter season - they claimed that only 5 or 6 cases could be traced to practice or games in the completed fall season in the entire state. Again, don't know that even one test was administered, other than if an athlete got sick and went and got the test.
