Neal Quinn committed to U of R

Huge pickup for the Spiders! Neal 7 feet 260 pounds. Shot 40% from 3s and 54.5% over all. 14/7 points a game 7.4 rebounds and 4 assists. Currently ranked as a very strong 4 star in this ranking https://evanmiya.com/
Has 2 years of eligibility. Congrats to the coaching staff for a job well done!

only took 5 3s last season & 7 in career so that 3% isn’t relevant but it’s possible he’ll take more in our offense.

regardless nice pickup & welcome Neal Quinn. The 2 years left is important.

Happy the Spiders landed a big and with 2 years of eligibility. Was hoping we would get a big surprise with Bryce, but no luck on that front. Hopefully the Staff has another rabbit to pull out of the hat.

Yeah, things worked out pretty well overall. Stephens didn't go anywhere that will hurt us, and we get Quinn for twice as long. I don't hate our lineup right now, but we still need a reliable shooter from somewhere (internal or transfer...ideally both). Get that and we have put ourselves in a place where we can do some things.

I agree - I think its likely Grace has to beat Quinn. Or does this Grace now hit portal or just decide to graduate as it seems like he finished the year so strong, was playing more minutes - and then it looks like he will get his time to play next year only to be filled with another player who jumps probably jumps ahead of him. But I think Grace can play the 4 - I think he is more agile than people think. But it will all depend on the opponent and matchup.

And either way - with Quinn being 7 foot, not sure he can play 30+ minutes. So Grace will still have time to play. Assuming Quinn is the starter - I bet Grace still gets 15-20 minutes, if not more.

I appreciate Matt and he made some big plays, but Quinn's a 7 footer who averaged 15, 7 and 4. those are Grant Golden-like numbers.

Matt's got a better chance starting with Quinn than over him.
Interesting thought. If we don't get another transfer who can play the 4, do we consider starting Matt at the 4 and Quinn at the 5. Mooney ran his two big man line up more often at the end of the year, I liked the way it worked when we were out there.

Still think we are very short at depth in the frontcourt, so hopefully we are not done in the transfer portal.

I think we are still short in the front court, so we don't want to lose Grace. Grace is not going to start at the 5, that is Quinn's job. But we still have lots of minutes for Grace both backing up at Quinn and time at the 4, when we can go with the two big man line-up.

Because who do we have at the 4 right now? Burton could play the 4, but do we really want to move our best players into a new role because of a depth issue.

If Burton comes back, we may break out of the 300’s in rebounding!!!! Nah, just kidding.

BTW, Quinn might be the highest rated recruit we have landed in over 50 years. This is using how he is rated as a transfer in a couple of databases. I also think there is more to come in the transfer portal. I would not be surprised if we end up with the best net transfer portal impact in the conference (Players transferring out vs in)

I completely agree with this Quinn and Grace will both start. The question is who will back them up. If they both play 30 minutes a game, we have another 20 minutes that needs to be filled.
Exactly, which is why we need another front court player via the portal.

Quinn and Grace are not starting together. Walz is not ready to play significant minutes at the 5 on day one as a true freshman, and we don't have great options for a backup 4 either. Only way I see Quinn/Grace playing together is if we get someone in the portal who projects as a backup 4/5. My hope is to get a starting 4 out of the portal, leaving Grace as the backup 4/5.

I think as the team currently stands, Nelson, Goose, Quinn, and Burton are starters along with either Bailey or Crabtree. Grace gets the 4/5 backup minutes, and Randolph is the eighth man.

Well, they are starting together if we don't get a high level transfer out of the portal because we have no other options. But I agree with your sentiment here. I don't think it would be ideal in a lot of games to have two centers on the court for long periods of time. There will be situations though where it could be really good to have them both playing side by side.

I think Grace is a solid 20 minute guy for us, which he would get backing up Quinn and hopefully another high level front court players player we get in the portal.

Excellent. I know nothing about either of these players so appreciate your insight.
Stephens has an advantage in blocks, FT %, Three %
Quinn has an advantage in Offensive Rebounding, Assists (40% higher volume), and Ast/TO ratio (2 to 1.3)
Both can hit twos.

That is for 2021-2022 season. Quinn seemed to have a bigger advantage 2020-2021 but that may be from all Patriot schedule.

No reason they can't start together and/or play a lot of minutes together. Both are big men who can handle the ball well, and Grace obviously doesn't need to play in the post all or even most of the time on offense. From what limited highlights I've seen, Quinn mostly shoots from the post, so I think they'd complement each other well. And on defense, they give us the kind of height combo we've possibly never had.

I don't think we were counting on 35 mpg from Grace anyway, but if he and Quinn combine for 60 good minutes a game, that's a good start. And as noted above, it leaves a good chunk of time for someone else, and hopefully that's another forthcoming addition.

That is what I have been think as well. Matt can spend much of his time at the 4 and not be anchored to the post.

I still like Vander Plas at Ohio as a 4 transfer

Don't know anything outside of basketball about him or who is interested in him, but

6'8" 230 has shot 60% from 2 3 out of 4 seasons and average 35% from 3 the last 2 season...
With a decent Steals and Defensive Rebound rate, but may only have 1 year?

What starter quality 4s are we currently going after?

I'm suspicious that Mooney is willing to let the 4/5 rotation stand at Quinn/Burton/Grace and then run out Nelson/Goose/Bailey/Crabtree/transfer at the 1-3 positions. Thats enough for an 8 man rotation right there, without including Randolph.

Good point, we definitely have the bodies to break it up that way and just go a little smaller when Quinn or Grace is out of the game. I don't know how much that changes what the offense looks like or how comfortable Mooney is with it, but if Crabtree is ready to be the shooter we need, you can go Quinn/Grace at the 5, Burton at the 4, Crabtree at the 3, Goose at the 2 and Nelson/Dji at the 1 for 20 minutes a game if you want.

Have we heard anything from Nweke at Columbia in the last month?

With us going up against Loyola for so many players eventually they will run out of spots, just not sure when...
