With talk about Noah's role in the other thread if he returns, plenty of guys will be vying for time come November. Not much thought on the 200 minutes and how they are divvied up, but here's my quick take on it without Noah.

30 GG
30 Jacob
30 Nick
25 Cayo
20 Francis
20 Jake
20 Gust
15 Sal
10 Grace
00 Burton

That totals 200 and could be way off. Small team no doubt and Mooney's team will have to be ON with the outside shot to be successful. Learning how to box out would help too. Including Nick I have 6 players who will see less time per game during conference play. So what are posters opinions regarding this matter?

We need to find out what the transfer situation is and if we get Yates back, but currently I would guess:

Center
Golden 32
Grace 8

Forward
Cayo 30
Sal 10

Wing/Shooting Guard
Sherod 30
Francis 30
Gustovson/Wojcik/Burton 20

Point Guard

Gilyard 38
Wojcik 2

Mooney had a much more rigid rotation than usual this year in terms of positions. Gilyard essentially was our only point guard. We always had either Golden or Grace at center, and almost always either Cayo or Sal at the 4. Cayo and Sal never played center toward the end of the season. There was more of a mixture across the 2/3 positions, but mostly players were restricted to playing in a single position.

I think Wojcik's minutes take the biggest hit next year, with Francis doing everything he does, but better. Gustovson is a more dynamic player and should get more of the SG/Wing minutes than Woj. Not sure how much Burton will play, but he could earn some minutes at the 3.

Yes I agree about Jacob getting more than 30 minutes but dividing the minutes up, I tried to show that Noah might not have a place here with only so many minutes to go around. Cayo more than 25 too.

Thanks 2011 for your input and good analysis. I feel exactly the same way about Gust having the greater upside than Woj. Both of them will have to take hits on playing time though by your numbers. Gust gets to the basket better and more athletic for defense going forward. Woj might be that off the bench guy that hits a couple 3s if only Mooney tried running a set play for him. At least one of them I believe if they want to get back to 20+ minutes a game will need to transfer after next year.

I think Fan2011 is right on the nose. Mooney will not change and this will be closer to the actual playing times.

Confident Jacob will play 37+, and Grant more than 30.

It’s nice to have at least a marginal prospect of guys fighting for time. That has been sorely missing the last three seasons.

I sat down to try to assign minutes to each guy for next year and it was not an easy task (what I think will happen, not what I want to happen). Assuming Noah isn't granted the extra year and no transfers, we are basically losing JJ (17) and Noah's (16) minutes (and
adding back Nick plus Blake (I don't see any way they aren't both getting big minutes). Plus adding freshman Burton.

What that means is (again assuming no transfers, which we would have to for this exercise) there are 25-30 less minutes to go around to guys who were getting those minutes this year. Somebody will be getting less time.

Grant - 30 (about the same as last year, I can't see Matt eating away at his minutes too much)
Jacob - 35 (he was at 37 mpg this year, I think with the addition of Francis we will have enough guard depth that at a minimum he won't be playing even more next year)
Nick - 25 (not sure what to do here, he will be coming off a serious rehab and with Gustavson's solid play this year plus adding Francis I think Nick's minutes will decrease a little from the 32 he averaged before his injury)
Cayo - 24 (down a bit from last year as Sal's minutes creep up, really needs to work on ft shooting and defense this off-season)
Francis - 27 (judging by his past performance and Mooney's love of guards I see Blake coming in a playing big minutes immediately)
Jake - 12 (I think his minutes dip the most next year, really this is the role I would choose for him, coming off the bench and hopefully sparking us with his 3 pt shooting)
Gustavson - 27 (I really like his game and think he does too many things well to keep off the court much)
Sal - 14 (earns more time than this past year, hopefully increasing as the season goes)
Grace - 6 (same backup role for Grant)
Burton - ?

Are these minute projections with Mooney as coach or without him? Until we hear from Hardt, I think all is premature. I think a new coach would do a better job of load management. In particular, Gilyard should not playing all 40 minutes as has all year. I don't think it is a coincidence that we see Gilyard's best work in the first 35 minutes of games. Lots of missed FT, slightly off shots in the last 5 minutes of game.

You guys do realize that you are talking about game management. Player combinations, player rotation, and even figuring out who should be playing to begin with is Mooney's greatest weakness.

Mr. "I forgot to play him" and "I need to get more minutes for him" will IN NO WAY be able to manage this successfully.

If all players stay (which is highly unlikely) this "problem" for Mooney will be a disaster. If 2 or 3 transfer out, then it could ease his burden some.

More "better players" is trouble for a Mooney coached team, not an advantage.

Not Homer, I used to do a "minutes" prediction every season. I looked back and was eerily close most years. Probably a lot of that was due to Mooney's predictability. The only impetus for him to change anything lately seems to be the heat he feels from being on the hot seat. That is not the motivation that I want driving my basketball coach and program. How many times did he say: "I need to get him more minutes". ALOT.
