IL Staff's Top 20: There Are No Perfect Teams
“13. Richmond (3 - 2)
There aren’t many defensemen in Division I who can handle the CJ Kirst assignment. Richmond’s Hunter Smith is one of them.
“We think Hunter is a teamer All-American,” Spiders coach Dan Chemotti said postgame. “He's great. We go, defensively, how he goes. He's been guarding the top matchup since he was a freshman. The way he prepares himself, the type of athlete that he is, how much studying he does on the other teams’ best guy. He's elite at all levels there.”
Aside from sliding upfield to Willem Firth’s offhand to leave Kirst open for his first goal, Kirst’s next two goals came on a dunk at the end of the half and a finalizer move on another defender. Smith caused two turnovers and scooped three groundballs, forcing Kirst into some sloppy play early and especially toward the end of the third quarter.
The Spiders are No. 7 in IL’s adjusted defensive efficiency rankings in large part to Smith’s elite athleticism and preparation. Shortstick Jack Pilling was also excellent in causing some chaos in the middle of the field and in settled sets and is one of the best 1-on-1 shorties in the game. Add in reigning MAAC DPOY Mitchell Dunham (2CT, 4GB vs. Cornell) and nobody will want to play defensive coordinator Paul Richards’ group in May. ”
