Mens - @ VCU - Sat 2/1 4pm CBSSN

I spent the afternoon at the science museum and didn't check the score at all. Knew what it would look like, as we all did. Just got home and watched a few minutes of the video. That's a tank that has no clue what to do, at all. Like deer in headlights. Obviously no coaching preparation, no idea what to run, no plan for how to get open, nothing.

You simply cannot continued to get humiliated like this and do nothing. CHANGE SOMETHING.

Nothings going to change because periodic extensions have perpetuated this.

Did any Spider play well in todays game?

I missed the game accidentally, which is an entirely different statement on the state of the program.

No answers, though that was obvious. "These things happen," but nobody was "committed enough, proud enough, tough enough to stop the bleeding."

The only way anything happens is if you boycott the program. That is what Mooney and Qman and Hardt have forced upon this university. There is no other choice. They expect full support next season WITH MOONEY, on the hopes of a mediocre season. Really How Dumb Do They Think We Are???
Anyone supporting this program financially is like buying CS money in 1863.

What the f is he smiling about?

These things happen…yeah they happen all the damn time to u Mooney. Sure this was the largest margin of defeat ever but u lose by an average of 16 pts at vcu over your whole career. As if this is a new thing. Most r blowouts. U don’t lose by 16 on average without a shit ton of blowouts. He’s kept the game to single digits 2 times out of 15 losses at Siegel. He can’t be that oblivious. These things happen gtfo. Maybe ask yourself why they keep happening.

Worst rivalry coach of all time.

Already we have shifted the narrative to "It's the NIL!!" That's the cover being used by the Mooneyites on social media. Always a damn excuse -- for everything.
Look, obviously we didn't have a problem with it last year right? :)
The narrative last year was that we were a tremendous destination with a stable coach, good culture, and great system for individuals to thrive in during their last year(s) of eligibility.

So the real question is... which one is more accurate and actually applies to us? I think that's the most important question that needs to be asked right now.

I could care less... as i'm sure you could care less... what ridiculous spin is being put on this 41 point loss. All of the issues we've had all year weren't exposed as badly, previously, because (as an example) William and Mary wasn't as good as VCU and our conference right now clearly isn't all that good, IMO. And, personally, i have a much bigger problem with the William and Mary game, again as an example, than i do with this result. The William and Mary game was winnable... and we did NOTHING to allow ourselves to win it.

This game was a foregone conclusion..... make whatever adjustments you wanted.... and if we lost by 27 as opposed to 41 cause we went zone or something.... I wouldn't feel any better.

My opinion, personally, as i think most people here feel..... is that this year is going to be a more accurate reflection of what this looks like for us moving forward than last year. This isn't a system that you can just have rotatable puzzle pieces... and it's clear by now that we don't adapt quickly to having multiple (or even a single) problem(s) to solve.

I care less that this is the most reasonable conclusion as I do that we likely aren't really willing to admit that this is the case and try to come up with a plan to solve it moving forward that doesn't involve us moving to a scholarship-less conference or something (if those even exist anymore).

After watching the last half of the GW game Wednesday, I knew we were tanking the season. We played
uninspired and had absolutely no energy. We need a coach with fire and one who absolutely hates to lose.

Amen. It should be obvious to anyone paying attention that when Mooney has a POY-caliber point guard, we win a fair number of games. When he doesn't, we aren't competitive. It's that simple. His system only works when he has GREAT players, and even then it doesn't typically get us over the hump (see last year).

Our teams under Mooney are never greater than the sum of their parts. Ever. To me, that's evidence that he is not a high-level coach.

Not to mention how many times UR teams have played tight over the last 4 minutes of games and endured random substitution patterns and lack of timeouts, etc. Those are the situations where good/great coaching shines through and long time fans/alums basically expect us to meltdown in those moments after 20 years of data. Mooney’s post game presser sounded like a coach in year 1 of a terrible re-build rather than a guy who is the “all time winningest coach, with a genius system, one of the longest tenured coaches in the country….” He sounded like a corporate CEO robotically reporting bad news to his board and then collecting his giant paycheck. No passion, no anger, and it shows on the court as the game was over in the first few minutes as the team that wanted it took it immediately.

They know the end is near. That's why they have all but disappeared from here. There is plenty of money to go around, just ask 80's when he shows up again.

Unless the Spiders are dropping down to the Patriot League for all sports, there is no way that Mooney will be back next year.

Just can't happen.

Last year the program was one of the best in the country, I believe it was said by the AD. An exaggeration of course that can’t even be applied to its own conference. A team that goes from first to worst shows something other than “a program”. It shows Fool’s gold. Having been seeing the same thing for 20 years. The first gold strike led to a locked in 10 year coaching deal. Environmental conditions like a series of ADs and a general lack of program mission lead to “tolerance” when any other basketball focused school would have changed directions. Then the COVID miracle arrived leading to the next gold strike with an A10 tournament victory and NCAA 1st round win and another coaching extension was granted. Then possibly the most surprising outcome (although I think it simply shows how average the A10 was and continues to be) was last year’s “Season championship”, which I put in quotes because it was actually a tie. There is nothing “foundational” about this program, it is just bits of good fortune along the way.

All of the issues we've had all year weren't exposed as badly, previously, because (as an example) William and Mary wasn't as good as VCU and our conference right now clearly isn't all that good, IMO.
The other spin is that it is all about Hunt. Yes the team is better with him than without him, but the team HAD Hunt for the entire weak OOC schedule and all there is to see is a heavy losing record then too. I agree with you Vegas, the A10 is not good.

don't adapt quickly to having multiple (or even a single) problem(s) to solve.
How about no ability to adapt at all?

a plan to solve it moving forward that doesn't involve us moving to a scholarship-less conference or something (if those even exist anymore).
UR does the best job of not stating anything specific about its plans or intentions for athletics (perhaps always but for at least the last 10 years I have closely followed). The only outward sign that has been given is the recent move of the football program to the Patriot League. I understand that football is not the “premier” sport and the erosion of the CAA conference was the motivation. However, one can apply the same rationale to the basketball situation and make the case that the A10 is not the right “fit”. As others have pointed out, this does not suddenly turn a losing program to a winning one, but may give a rigid, developmental coaching style a better chance of success.

What is UR going to do? I don’t know, but history says to make no changes and keep the eyes open for the next good fortune to come. In the AD’s love for nautical phrases, UR is waiting for the tide to come back in.

JOC article in RTD today. Title - UR razed by Broad Street bulldozing. Subtitle - Seven game losing streak is worst for UR in 18 years.

Not sure which is worse - watching our team get predictably destroyed by VCU or seeing article title in print.

You seriously underestimate our Athletic Department's ability to coast

Nothing is going to happen or change. Last year - Mooney and team won the A10 regular season AND beat VCU. That alone gets him another few years no matter what. Administration will also point to just a few years ago right before COVID - we had 2 losing seasons with Mooney, stuck with him - and result was a NCAA bid and NCAA WIN. So they are not going to change anything because of one bad year.
What is more pressing is can UR compete in this new world of college basketball? Can we pay enough to get players out of the portal? Can we relax our admissions enough to get HS kids and portal kids into UR? Is this administration willing to take part in the dark side of athletics, which is now legal - in order to field a team capable of winning and making the NCAA tourney? I think we all know the answer to these questions, and this is the reason I think Mooney will be coach for several more years as UR looks for a new conference in the near future.

We gave VCU a nice NET boost from 47 to 42. Meanwhile, we dropped 13 spots to 255 and are now 40 spots behind Fordham.
I believe there are something like 360 plus teams in NET. Embarrassingly we hold company with other weak weak teams. That is our place.

Providing a bump like that to a team playing at home against our NET is basically impossible to do at this point in season. Look at us. Little ol’ Richmond. Amazing.

“We gave VCU a nice NET boost from 47 to 42. “ all our coaches esp the GIPER should be emailing that out to all p5 teams asap. That should be our pitch. Our schedule should be lights out good next season. Kenneth from 30 Rock is gonna come thru for us.

Mooney..."We've really competed"

I'm ready for a VCU billboard with a picture of Mooney and "Extend Mooney's contract!"

Lol that’s next level.

#Extend Mooney
- VCU Alumni & Fans

And nobody can say it’s in bad taste. It’s a positive message.

I will contribute to this one.

Athletic department still has not posted Mooney’s post game press conference to YouTube. Usually it’s done a few hours after the game ends. There is just no semblance of accountability at any level of the AD.

I deserve to hear “we competed” or “I don’t think we competed” from the horse’s mouth!

U do. It’s what a real program does. What “one of the top programs in the nation” does.

We sent out 2 tweets during a UR vcu rivalry game. This is what we do. Head. In. The. Sand.

Coincidentally 2 might be the number of 2 pt shots vcu missed in the whole game.

That was actually Mooney who said it. And he didn’t even mean just last year. What best program in the Nation drops off the face like this completely. Nobody. Maybe Louisville. Then they get a new coach and back into top 25. Hmm.

Hardt was the rising tide in the Regatta guy.
His comments r easier to spot. u can describe as highfalutin. Tho a better word is GAY.
