Is Shaeffer the worst coach in Division I??

Had a beer with (unbeknownst to me at the time) a friend of Shafer's. I don't follow WBB much but he volunteered quite a bit and has apparently talked to him recently. He is not a Spider so I assume he heard the following from Coach S. Some of the key phrases:
"Sweating bullets."
"New AD wants to make his mark."
"Bummed because the transfer sitting out plus the highly-recruited girl from Trinity are really good."

Not editorializing, just passing it along.

I haven't scouted any available coaches (unless you're a parent or just plain nuts for women's hoops, I'm sure you haven't either). I don't even know who they'd replace Schafer with. I'm sure a cardboard cutout would be better than what we have now.

Tavern?

Broc, the thing that worries me the most, is that Hardt will "make his mark" firing Schaefer - which let's be completely honest here, seems like a no brainer.
And, as theorized by members of this board, he tries to use that to deflect from not firing Mooney. That would be insane.
But I see stranger things in sports every day. Just look at the Cowboys and Redskins owners. Heck, my Rams kept Jeff Fisher for the longest time, when anyone knew he was plain incompetent - doing the same thing over and over and over. He was leading the NFL rules committee and the Rams led the NFL in penalties. Every time a yellow flag would fly - the camera would pan to Fisher - and he would have that dumb quizzical look on his face.

I fear we have reached the same point with Richmond basketball and Mooney. "I need to get him more minutes" "We are working on rebounding" etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc.

It seems that Hardt and about 3 members of this board are the only ones left that do not see this. Wow.

Another victory for the girls today. Looks like Shaefur might have found a lineup that works.

My wife said she's torn about the recent run of success. She can't stand Schaeffer but wants the girls to do well. Sounded like what a lot of us say about Mooney.

The good thing is that if Shaver keeps winning and Mooney keeps losing, Hardt will have an easier time with his decision. Assuming he doesn't want to fire Schaeffer and Mooney. Though we all know that both Shaufer and Mooney need to be canned. I have to admit, if you'd told me one of our teams would win three in a row, I never would have guessed it would be Chaueffer's team.

The only way either one of them should have a chance of returning is if they win the A10 tourney. Our AD can put his complex highs and lows matrix away. What do you think Hardt?

I think...”Fat Man Dancing in Sprinkler.”

This thread cracks me up, I love our commitment to spelling Shoefer different ways every time.

I propose we do this with Moondoggle too. I'll start: No I don't think Coach Schever is the worst coach in America, I do think the worst is right across the hall: Coach Moaney.

Coach Moaning and Coach Shayfur?
I believe it is Coach Money. He is not too good at the other parts of his job, but as K reminds us, he is quite good at cashing is 100K monthly check he gets to be bad at his job.

I was looking at replay of UR Ladies and Shafer comments. First of all we have some of the most unathletic looking
players I have ever seen at UR. Some look like they should be in a bowling league vs on basketball court. Which leads
me to the point that recruiting wise we are not competitive. Give these ladies credit, they are trying with what they have
to work with, but when we play Dayton next, we should be outmatched by quite a bit of talent.

In the time that Schaeufer has been our coach, the following A10 women's programs have made it to the NCAA tournament at least once:
Temple
Xavier
Charlotte
St. Bonaventure
Fordham
Duquesne
Dayton
St. Joe's
George Washington

Shavfer has made it zero times.

It looks like coach Chauffer is due, no? We wouldn't want to risk losing out on our turn. What is the saying, a broken 12H clock is correct two times on each day?
Stiffler is on a little bit of winning streak right now.

I could be watching NCIS reruns today, but instead I'm watching Shaefurs crew on NBCSN for their only national game this year. How can SLU recruit so much more successful than Schaeffer? They have 5 freshmen who account for 53% of their scoring, and our freshmen are not much. Pathetic.

so much for the perfect weekend
Told ya. I watched while flipping back and forth to history channel. Our girls look like no one taught them proper shooting motion or passing skills. It was embarrassing looking at the difference in their first 10 and ours. They were more skilled, quicker and more athletic.

Shafer has had enough time and we have only one direction we can go.

The scary thing is how many times Schaueffer must have gotten extensions to get to this point despite never winning anything. Mooney got a 10-year deal, which explains why he's still here. I doubt Shaffeure ever got longer than a five-year deal. And he's also in year 14. Amazing.

Also, we were told by Acting AD Hale a few years ago that we "had" to extend Mooney, otherwise he would be hampered in recruiting by not having a 4 year deal. If that was the case, why is Shafler operating on an expiring contract.

When he was extended in summer before the 17-18 season he already had 4 seasons left on deal. 17-18, 18-19, 19-20, 20-21. We gave him a 5th at that time. Pretty absurd on multiple levels. One that we'd add a 5th year to a guy with plenty of security already and two, that we'd make such a decision in the vacuum between AD's. Then we hire Jabba the Hardt for a retirement gig who does nothing. Sorry he hired Joe Lunardi as a scheduling consultant. Game changer.

That extension signing during the AD search process is when I realized just how f*cked up our athletic department is. In no sane world do you tie your incoming AD's hands by giving your under-performing head coach a contract extension, but we did. We had the perfect reason to tell Mooney and his agent, "we are not making any contract decisions until the new AD is hired". But we did it anyway. Truly dysfunctional.

"Jabba the Hardt?"

Seriously?

I like it! He does remind me of the Jabba in Star Wars! Just like Greenberg, former VT HC, reminds me of Uncle Fester. All he needs is a glowing lightbulb in his mouth!

Opposite of seriously tho nicknames are a rite of passage. FRS I believe coined it actually, where I first heard it. I tell ya FRS hits a bluebird every once in a while.

3 more games left in Schiffer's tenure after today's win against bottom feeder La Salle. Schaver can't still be coach after this year, can he?

This should have been Shaefer's last game last night with the women's team--9 and 21. That's abysmal--after going a paltry 14-17 last season. Haven't had a winning season for the ladies since the 14/15 season.

anyone have an O/u on how long before hardt pulls the trigger with MS?
