Is Shaeffer the worst coach in Division I??

In his defense, Shafer was given a multi year pass following the balloon tragedy. I think only someone highly deficient in empathy would have handled that differently.
To Eight Leggers point, people suffer tragedies every single day. Some of those tragedies bear out in the public but most bear out in private.

If Shaeffer and the program were having difficulties coping with the tragedy, the empathetic response is to make sure they get the appropriate mental health treatment/grief therapy. The school should have (and I'm sure they did) set that and paid for that and allowed them time off during their days to seek this help.

Getting "multi-year passes" on your job performance is not being empathetic, it is enabling. There is a huge difference.

Tragedies occur every day but Individuals suffer tragedies infrequently. Individuals who suffer tragedies understandably do not get fired at the same time except in extreme cases. I would not count this among those that warranted it.

To be clear, I wasn't suggesting firing him the next day. It happened in mid-May, beyond the timeframe when it makes sense to fire a coach anyway in most cases. I would have fired him that March. Once we didn't do that, I would have fired him the next year.

Does anyone think that Hardt possibly fires Shaeffer, and this saves Mooney for another year? Just thinking Hardt might now want to be looking for 2 new basketball coaches in the same year and maybe if Mooney can win 15 games, he can justify the "improvement" and "young team with a lot returning" for the men's team, but then maybe drop Schaeffer.

Yes. Schafer is the best thing Mooney has going at this point. It would be a cheap buyout and Hardt could still come off as a "Tough guy".

I tell you, if it happens, I will buy season ticketa to the women but not men.

How is Mooney going to win 15 games? Think that ship has sailed.

Agree with both u and Trap. I’ve suggested that before on here. Firing Shaffer was such a layup after last season and Jabba the Hardt sat on his Queally gifted throne.

Mooney always seems to finish middle of the pack in the A10 and with the A10 being down this year - I think it is no different. A lot of this rests of Gilyard's health, as I don't think he is 100% - but with the schedule giving some time to rest before first A10 game - I think if they can win the last 2 OOC games or even just 1 - that gets us to 5-8 or 6-7. Then I still think we win 9 games in A10 play (just like last year) and we are knocking on 15 wins.

Ohio must be good (10-0). Looking at their schedule, it looked similar to our men's schedule (Coppin St., IUPUI for starters). Before playing us, their average margin of victory was 22. To me, that means that our team is a total sewer show.

Even back in the days of the barracks, I never thought we would be a sewer show. :-/
(Most of you have no idea what I mean by the “days of the barracks.” LOL)

Shaeffer was top recruiter for UGA before coming to UR. Little of that
ability has translated into a successful, consistent women's program. After 14
years of mediocrity, UR can certainly do better.

“Mediocrity” is being generous. He’s finished eighth or worse in the A10 seven times and only as high as third once. It’s a clear sign that when it comes to women’s sports, the administration truly couldn’t care any less about wins and losses.

Since Ginny’s untimely death the program has been in a nose dive.Ginny was the recruiter.
You just needed to sign an X to get into Georgia.

I remember when we could at least count on the ladies to have good teams.
This is a horrible period to be a Spider basketball fan. Very, very sad.

Sadly it has become just like those days - while the barracks still stood - and no one had any expectation that we would play in the NCAA Tournament or the NIT - (the lesser tournaments were nonexistent)................

Getting back on topic, I see that the tradition continues with women's hoops:
We lose to Drexel 35-58 and are now 2-10 for the season.

For comparison with one to the best -- Tony Bennett at UVA -- in his 13th year of coaching, 299-119 .728 and in conference 105-51 .673.

Mooney may well he saved since he looks like a genius compared to Schaeffer. My problem with the girls is it appears that Shaeffer knows NOTHING about coaching or what it takes to win. He wanted to run more up-tempo so his offense is pass, pass, then let one of his players go 1 on 3 and throw up a very low percentage shot. Look at our shooting percentage - awful. There is no teamwork at all - it's a bunch of individuals. Look at the number of assists per game - awful. Shaeffer can't tell the difference between an athlete and a basketball player. Many of his athletes have a very low basketball IQ and do not play well together at all. And he can't or won't fix it. I sit behind the bench at many mens and womens games and its comical to here Shaeffer and his assistants talk to the players - they often contradict each other within seconds of each other. Years ago, the assistants carried him, now the assistants shouldn't be carrying the water.

It would be really amazing to hear Jabba the Hardt’s reasoning to keeping Shafer after last year. Certainly this continues to be a cause for concern about his leadership & evaluation abilities going forward. Perhaps he just didn’t realize we had a women’s team. Or maybe PQ didn’t give him a directive.

Missed Opportunity, Mr. Hardt...

Went to the game today against URI, a team that wasn't very good. We had a 10 point lead, and Schaefer pulled a Mooney and blew it. One of URIs players had a monster game, and we had no answer (sound familiar?).

Almost every player on URs roster has started one game. He's desperately trying to figure out a lineup that works.
