Give us back our Basketball Program

I forgot all about the monkey curse, things went downhill fast after that. I still say the GW game at the Robins center during the 2013-2014 season is when I knew something was wrong and we needed a new coach.

Thank you, Mo. I just want our program back too. I am so tired of the recruiting misses, the staleness, the lack of change, the lack of postseason appearances, and most of the lack of accountability within the program.

I think I may call into the Greg Burton show and voice my opinion. We as fans need to be heard, show our frustration and a change will be made. We are the ones buying tickets and giving money to the program. We have power and need to use it.

Is there any precedent for donations being put into escrow until a change is made?

Tom Crean is available and has learned quite a bit during his year off.

I think this guy would be a home run. I thought he could never quite get over the hump at Indiana. I posted this link too buried in one of these threads. I love how he took the year to improve his craft and get NEW IDEAS. A novel idea at that. Would he consider Richmond? I am doubtful. I think this guy could get a bigger conference job in a heartbeat, and between the usual hot seats and now the FBI investigation, there very well may be a lot of big name openings coming up. I'm just not all that sure of how attractive an option we are to someone that is coming off coaching a blue blood.
But maybe, just maybe he doesn't want to jump into that frying pan again? Richmond is a very nice option if you don't want a rabid fan base that taunts your daughter in her college class because you lost to your rival.
I remember a few years ago I was talking to an AAU coach at a tourney in up state NY - he was coaching his son's team and had gotten out of coaching. He was a former D1 head coach, and a former ACC assistant among his stops. It came up I was a Richmond fan. He told me he thought Richmond was one of the top jobs in the country, considering how much they were paying Mooney, and the fact that there was almost no pressure comparatively. That stuck with me, as I was already feeling that Mooney had lost his fastball, if he ever had it.
The flip side of this, is maybe it is a great environment for someone like Crean to come with low pressure and make a big splash. I love this guys motivation, and I think he could recruit big time - if we let him.
Here is your big chance Hardt. Hiring Crean would be a power move, and no time like the present.

Last night was statistically our worst defensive performance in at least the last 16 years, maybe ever. Our second worst performance statistically was against Jacksonville St. earlier this season.

You mean the game where Davis, Taylor, Sparrow, ANO, & Josh Jones had 100 minutes and 10 points? It was also GW 's only win against us in the last 7 games before last night. Then again that year GW was a 9 seed in the NCAA and 24-9 (7 of the losses were to 5,5,5,6,8,9,11 seeds)

But in 2011-2012 GW won 2 games against us but 10 games total.

Maybe they should start being a barameter?

Are you saying our 2 worst defensive games perhaps since Dooley (1996-1997) were this season?

Yeah, we sure don't want to try something difference with our defense do we? Maybe Mooney should learn how to employ a zone. I'm sure Rob Jones and his 1 year of assistant coaching experience can help him learn a zone.

Or maybe not.

Yes I do mean that game. What stood out to me that night was how GW beat us up inside and we had no answer for it. We were on the verge of being a tournament team and needed a big win over a team like them to help our case. I will never forget my dad and I screaming all game for Mooney to switch to a zone or at least try it because the defense we were playin wasn't working. That night is when I realized that Mooney refuses to change and that his refusal to change anything was hurting us. Ever since night I have been on the fire Mooney bandwagon.

I hope everyone tries to call in. Our voices need to be heard. We can't stand for this.

I get wanting to try anything else. this isn't working. like Mooney, I have no defensive answers. because I believe we'll be awful in a straight zone just like we're awful in a match up zone and just like we're awful at man. same principals. you still have to stop someone. you still have to stay between them and the basket. you still have to close out on shooters. and we're unable. it's baffling to me.

many here blame the scheme but I don't believe it's scheme. and while I get we're a little small we're also athletic enough to compete defensively. but we're not competing. sometimes guys hit shots and that happens, but too often we're just playing bad defense. and it's guys who are talented enough to play good defense. I don't believe it's confusion. but it's something. we aren't getting it done, and Coach isn't getting it out of them.

despite all the losing, I think our players like playing with each other and want to play for Mooney. but continued play like last night could force Hardt's hand. I know many here are hoping for that. I'd rather we play better.

I've never heard of a team scoring on all but four possessions in a half, as GW did in the first half last night, when it scored as much as GW did. It would be one thing if the score had been 20-15 and they only had 12 possessions or something, but to score 54 points? Insanity.

Not at the top of the list but thinking collectively, not individually. There's probably a decebt amount of coin in the non-Access Craver bucket.

I wasn't asking you. I'm certain you're a donor.

Just don't want people calling in making false claims, not that Hardly Workin' would check.

I checked to see if this was similar but nope, not even close.

Not only did they score 54 points in the first half--they did it without hitting a free throw.

Yeah, we didn't want to impede their progress for their dunks and easy lay-ups. I guess no one wants to commit a hard foul and stop that parade.

CM has become a symbol of mediocrity for our alma mater. I maintain that if we make a good hire for our next coach, our player/recruit losses will be minimal, a really great hire may mitigate the losses completely. It's time to be bold, cut CM loose, and make an outstanding hire.

It would be tough to lose some guys to transfer if we get a new coach but I think I would be ok with it. Sometimes you have to blow it all up and start over again.

If we actually got Tom Crean I think we wouldn't lose anyone.

I'd take Tom Crean in a heartbeat. Kevin Eastman is really high on him, just going off of his comments on Twitter.

Apparently Crean is enjoying his role on tv though. Not sure if that's a temp job, or what.

If this happened, I would have to change my shorts the moment I heard that Crean was the new Spiders coach.

Maybe I just feel beaten down by the season at the moment, but I’d think Crean is a pipe dream, like me hoping I win power ball.

Since ‘94, Crean has been an assistant at Pitt and Mich. St., then head coach at Marquette and Indiana (9 years a piece). I hope I’m wrong, but that just doesn’t seem like someone who’s even picking up the phone from Richmond, never mind walking through that door.

I'm willing to jump on the Crean bandwagon. Like Dino Gaudio, we'd have to first pry him away from his TV gig, and then convince him that coming to Richmond would be worth his while.

I'm not sure it's even in the realm of possibility to get Crean, but he would be the caliber of new hire that would practically guarantee that we don't lose any players and recruits, and our overall recruiting profile would instantly improve substantially.

There's a lot of dominoes to fall in college basketball this year, have to imagine someone like Crean is going to have some options.

We should act quickly and decisively to cut CM loose, and jump to the front of the Tom Crean queue. Rob Jones is certainly capable of keeping the dumpster fire burning for a few more games.

There may be a number of programs looking for new coaches after the next report comes out. When that happens they start looking downstream.
