Gilly in the NBA

That must be Lofton. I was watching in the preseason, and asking my sons who that rather large guard was. I was thinking he was much smaller, but might have been thinking of his dad.
Damn, he is a load! And surprisingly, not the son of Kenny Lofton the baseball player. I remember looking that up a year or so ago and being surprised. But man, he looks like he's going to eat himself out of the league.

Rough night for Gilly in another Grizz loss. Started, but only 16 minutes and 0-for-2 from deep. Just one assist, no boards, and a –21.

I am truly impressed with everything Gilly has achieved. Seem like he has lost some confidence by the coach. He has gone from starting to no minutes a game ago and only 2 minutes this past game. Gilly has always surpassed expectations and I hope he does it again. Let's go Gilly! The Spiders fans our proud of you!

Rough turn but they kept losing and the coach needed to find something that worked. Unfortunately Vince Williams got 15 points and 9 boards tonight and their emergency guard signing that they got via a medical exception got 19. Those were the backup guards with Rose starting. With 2 wins last 2 games I don’t expect he will be back in there again soon if they keep winning. Gotta score in the NBA, can’t just be a passer especially if the ream desperately needs scoring, like Memphis does.

Even with Rose out tonight, Gilly didn't get on the floor at all in the first half. Looks like the experiment of having him run the show really is winding down and they're trying different options, unfortunately. Hard to argue with their poor record.

Gilly with his most substantial floor time since Thanksgiving weekend in another Grizz loss. 13 minutes off the bench, 1-for-1 from deep, and 3 assists with no turnovers. Tied with Roddy at +1 as the only Grizzlies with positive +/-.

I wasn't watching the game, but seemed from the play-by-play that the Grizz missed a ton of shots down the stretch. I'm assuming Gilly was facilitating for his teammates but they were missing.

He's in a tough spot with his size...three balls on kick-outs or quick pull-ups from deep are about the only thing he can do to score. If he drives or pulls up inside the arc, he just gets swallowed up.

developing a floater in the lane so he can be a little more multi-dimensional would help. But his first game he shot like 4-9 from 3, right? In nba games there are enough shots that everyone on the court for 13 minutes should have at least 3. But Gilly did do the same at UR, he'd have 1 shot in a first half, so it's something that he's done in developing a pass-first game, but it is sometimes to his detriment (also we saw what happened when he did shoot more in A10 and NCAAs.) IMO he needs to be more selfish with shooting to stick in NBA full time. It's a doable balance, as he can still be pass-first as the team needs him to be, but can also shoot more.

gotta be REALLY open to shot 3's in the NBA at 5'9".
from what little I've seen, he does pull the trigger when open.

Eh, Gilyard has a sweet little stepback dribble he does to create space. If you look at the 3 he made yesterday he’s open but a big man closeout comes at him quick and he makes it, even with a not perfect pass to him. If the release is quick enough he doesn’t meed a ton of extra space. I’m sticking to my guns here just needs more of an aggressive shooter’s mentality. If Santi Aldama can get up 25 shots in a Grizzlies game surely Gilyard can get 5+ if he’s getting more than a dozen minutes.

I'm sure Aldama fans wish he got up more than 4 shots yesterday, too.
Sure but that is the low end for him and it is still a shot ever 4 minutes which is around what I am advocating Gilyard look to do. You’re cherrypicking one game but Aldama’s last 5 he gets up a shot every 3m of playing time. When lots of guys were out a month ago he was shooting even more.

If you’re arguing you can stick on an nba roster by not really being a threat to shoot, you better have at least one other well above average trait. For a small guy like Gilyard, prob even harder.

He’s making shots, just not taking enough IMO.

not arguing that he shouldn't shoot. I'm saying from when I've watched he does shoot when he can get a good shot off. like the step-back you referenced earlier. but he'll pass if he sees a better opportunity. or if he can't get a shot off. a 7 footer like Aldama can get shots off easier.

The other thing is, you don't know what the coach/staff has told him to do when he's in there. He may be doing exactly what they want or have asked.

Yup fully aware of that. He’s a consummate team player. I’m sure they are aware of his A/TO ratio and ability to set guys up. But IMO to force their hand even more he needs to score. If he was on a team / court with 4 lights out gunners, sure, pass all day. Other than Bane and sometimes Jackson, it’s not the situation.

Give them more than they want/expect is my point. Get yours.

I was worried when they sent him down to the G-League, but nice to see him get called back up quickly. The team is showing a lot of faith in Gilly and I bet he will not disappoint.

Ja has one more game left in his suspension, and Rose and Smart are both out tomorrow with injuries. Gilly time again?

Thinking of going to the game at Denver on Dec 28th if Gilly might play. I'll look to you guys to see his outlook. Would be a lot of fun to cheer for him!

If you make it be sure to wear your Richmond swag, I'm sure Gilly would appreciate it and likely award you with a personal visit.

Haha. We will definitely wear our Richmond gear! I'm getting excited! I can't catch so many games now that I'm in Colorado, so this will be special. I did make it to the Wichita State game - only game on the schedule in my half of the country.

Shooting not quite as good in the second half, but he finished with 12 on 4-for-6 from deep. 7 assists against 3 turnovers, also a steal and one board.

Now we see what happens when Ja comes back for tomorrow's game. It sounds like the Grizz are going to waive Lofton to make room for him, which is too bad since he and Gilly have played well together dating back to last year with the Hustle.

That was a very important game for Gilly to do well. Last game to get big minutes before Ja comes back and he delivered on the opportunity. Very solid game, which is why he played the most minutes of any player on the team. Go Gilly!

So that off the dribble dish is what I’ve been hoping to see more of, and glad to see it. He utilized his speed to get into the paint and found the man when the defense collapsed on him. If he can add a floater game it becomes even more effective.

Gilly could have easily had a double double had his teammates been able to score after great passes from him.

Huge night for Ja in his return...27 second-half points (34 for the game) including a spinning shot at the buzzer to give the Grizz the win over the Pelicans after being down by as many as 24. Also had 8 assists and 6 boards, but 5 turnovers. Gilly did not get on the floor even with Smart and Rose out.
