Florida

Our offense is not clicking. Yes - we are missing some open shots, but your defense has to step up when you have a bad night shooting. On pace right now to give up near 80 points and we might give up 20 offensive rebounds. Its not like Florida is shooting lights out either - with 4 minutes left, took a look at the stats and they are at 38% overall. And 28% from 3 and about 50% from Free throw line - but they are just bullying us on the glass and playing like men, while we are playing like little mid-majors on the boards.

Throw this game away and concentrate on protecting home court.

Agree with SpiderTrap. I believe this is largely due to tired legs, and overall tiredness. We really only had one day to get back home from Vegas and get ready to go on the road again. Not enough time, unless you get 12-hours of sleep on your one day, which probably did not happen.

We just need to shurg this one off, as due to "jet-lag,", or tiredness, or scheduling, and then focus totally on getting back to playing the way we did in Vegas, and in the games leading up to Vegas. We can clearly play better than this. I just hope this board does not go into one of those "The sky is falling" modes, where all of the comments are negative, and we start giving our players a "bad trip." I, for one, just want to encourage them to get back to playing the way we know they can! Is anybody else on board that a bunch of criticism is not going to do any good?

This may be the worst team defensively for UR that I can remember. Maybe going back to the Goetz days. Horrid fundamentals. Don't see it getting better any time soon.

Quick look at some key HT stats.

FLA 9-1 off. rebound advantage leading of course to 13-0 2nd chance points. Surprisingly UR more FTAs but only 4-12 while Gators are 8-9.

FLA is good but Spider D must and hopefully will improve. Tough shooting night for UR and this game shows where TA can't be the man every night.

Game totals

FLA 17-9 off rebounds 23-4 2nd chance and FLA 14-23 to UR 7-20 FT

Florida might not be UK but looks like a top 4 SEC team to me.

Hard game to watch, but we lost to a very good Florida team. Have to use this game as fuel for our 4 home game stretch. It would be a great confidence boost for us to get on a nice winning streak before conference play

Ok Grand Pa!!! :)

It was a really tough 3 game stretch but still no excuse for the lack of fire we brought tonight. I can take losing if the effort is there, it wasn't tonight.

Since we are taking this year off from playing defense why do we need to play DT and TD? Marshall doesn't play any defense but at least he can score from us, or is a threat to score. I agree with others, why not play PF more?
Tonight MW looked horrible on D but in fact everyone was slow to help defense. My question is why did he not least give PF 5-10 minutes for TJ. He could not have played any worse.

Scouting report for teams versus UR - pound it inside as defenders will move out of the way and let you dunk. If you miss, you have a really good chance of getting rebound or rebounds for 2nd & 3rd attempts. More dunks tonight or in California game? Is there an end of season prize on who dunks the most against us?

When we don't shoot well, we have little chance of winning. Tonight was an example of that, as other parts of game missing such as defense, rebounding, and foul shooting. Not much else left of fundamentals to win on.

Agree with Mo. Burn the tape and move on. If I am CM, I just make sure I adress with the team that you have to be ready to play each night. Not saying the guys didn't try, but the we stood around and watched and were not agressive in the first half.

Teams do have bad games. So early in the season when it is fairly obvious with fifteen minutes to go in the game you probably are going to lose, why not play the young guys?????????? They are NEVER going to learn how to play well in a game if they never play in a game. When you have two stiffs who can't score and really are not good on defense why are they playing at all in a meaningless game? This to me is what separates a coach who really wants to build a team from some clown who has no clue what to do or who should be in there trying to do it.
Sure I hope they bounce back on Saturday and in the next three games after that which should be winnable, but I would rather see this "coach" try to build a team that is going to be competitive in every game not just in the ones where the opposition can't stop Terry Allen who is very good but is not all world . He missed at least six shots right around the rim which he usually makes against lesser defenses. He can't do it alone. And he can't do it every night. It is a team game.

Burn the tape my ass. I show the damn thing before, during and after every practice on the four big screens in the RC, especially during free throw and rebounding practice. Assuming we practice that.

To answer the previous posts, a 20 point loss looks better than a 35 point loss on a bubble team's resume.

don't burn the tape show it to them as reminder as to what can happen when you play like tonight. Question, did coach and the guys read the boards and see that it was okay to lose this one?

Agree, it's only 1 loss. I always thought 8-4 would OK so only lose to either NIU or TTech. I personally would start MW next game or up his minutes as a sub. No hesitation in his game at all and finally seeing him shows me why he was highly recruited out of HS. Goes hard to both boards and don't see DT's D being that much superior. Did you know in 2nd half of Cal game, MW got 16 to 7 minutes for DT.

Bubble Team? The Lawrence Welk of the RVA.

Guess we're back onto name calling. Great.

If we take 2 out of 3 from UNI, ODU and Texas Tech, we'll be light years ahead of where we were OOC last year and we were a bubble team last year.

Moliva I agree but it's a big IF...I'm concerned about our D and if our O isn't clicking we are in trouble as we cant rely on it to stay in games. Tonight was the worst case of example of poor rebounding and getting crushed. The biggest thing that bothers me is the easy lay ups other teams get against us.

Again the million dollar question that may never be answered in the Mooney era: What would happen if we tried to switch our D to something else if it's not working? Might not ever get the chance to see that but always wondering.

Our guys looked tired and missed shots they usually make, could be from playing two very physical games on the west coast a couple of days ago. We actually played pretty well in the 2nd half. We got a good number of defensive stops and scored at a good rate in the 2nd, we missed a lot of shots we usually make and had more defensive lapses in the 1st. Defense is still a question, but defensively we did a lot better this game than we have in previous games this year despite not rebounding well.

Will mooney ever try to mix it up knowing this group might not b able to stay w quick more athletic teams.

They are playing defense like Adoda is still behind them to clean up their mess.

6pm Saturday night at the RC no one will be thinking about this game tonight.

It's very humid down here in the Sunshine State.Chalk the performance up to constant 95% humidity.

No, he will not. The question has been asked 1000s of times on this board and answered on the court each and every time. At some point, you'd figure this would get through to people, whether they like it or not.

I am surprised that no-one has mentioned yet what I saw in this game. If you thought "Richmond looked like a different team tonight" then I think that you were correct. The Spider players did not seem to be themselves and here is what It looked like to me:

Florida's new young Coach was outstanding! The Florida players executed a very good game plan. The Florida players (as a result of scouting & coaching) knew exactly what UR (offensive) tendencies were. All game (until garbage time) the Florida defense forced Allen, Cline, S.Jones and Wood into playing outside of their personal sweet spots.

UR's offense was out of sync for most of the game, and the defensive scheme is why. It was obvious from the jump that Florida was going to double team Allen & Cline anytime that they touched the ball down low (no brainer). They also paid close attention to impeding S. Jones wherever he was on the floor (pretty much took away his jump shot & paid close attention to him when he drove the lane). Richmond's 4 scoring options were forced out of their comfort zones, and the result was that they struggled. Florida's defense mostly ignored Taylor & Davis (no brainer) banking that they just can't beat you.

It was executed to near perfection. Poor shooting was not the only problem tonight. There was no offensive flow from the Spiders, totally out of sync. Spider frustration ensued, Florida confidence increased, and the game was over early. Others have mentioned this, but, Mooney made NO effort to make adjustments. He just sat and watched it happen.

I suspect that this defensive strategy will be employed time and time again when you go up against teams (conference) who know you well. I hope that no-one else executes this plan as well as Florida. Florida is a good team this year, big & strong, but no where near great. Hats off to the Florida Coaches and players. They just made game film for others as to slowing this high scoring Spider team down. UR Coaches and players better come up with a successful counterpunch.

Of course, it will also help if the players impose a bit of defense, rebound, and make some free throws :).
