Here we go...home-and-homes with W&M, JMU, and Elon. Interesting setup with Towson bowing out to make 11 CAA teams. South division has four teams playing round robin home-and-homes, while North division has seven teams playing each other once.

Looks like Russ is going to have to circle the William and Mary game 2x this year.

I can dig this. Two chances to beat the Tribe. Maybe we get lucky and beat JMU once. I know nothing about Elon’s outlook. How will the CAA crown an auto-qualifier?

Hopefully, the LAX schedule includes home games on 3/6,3/13, 4/3.

Russ will play as many players as possible during these ‘games’ with the Primary objective of minimizing player injuries.

To be honest, the round robin, home and home of 6 games is kinda silly.Hopefully,we’ll use it as nothing more than ‘scrimmages’ in order to give each of the 86 rostered players an opportunity to impress.

BTW,JMU has added 2 games on the front end of its CAA schedule-Morehead State,Robert Morris-2 lightweights, for a total of 8 games.

Best conference record gets the auto-bid. If the two division champs have the same record, then there's an unspecified tiebreaker, which is tricky considering no cross-divisional play.

Are the playoffs not going to have at-large bids this spring?

I remember one season we lost the AQ on a coin flip.

The NCAA Football Championship will feature 16 teams with 11 automatic qualifiers and five at-large berths. The playoffs are set to begin on Saturday, April 24 with a champion being crowned in Frisco, Texas on May 14, 15 or 16.

Thank you, sir. It appears that JMU is the only one of the four teams in our CAA "division" that is playing non-conference games.

CAA Football declines fall mulligan, now drives toward a strange spring season | College Sports | richmond.com

“At Richmond, coach Russ Huesman prioritizes the fall of 2021. He said he will extensively use younger players in the spring, limiting the involvement of his veterans so they have recovered and are physically prepared for the fall.”

Coach Huesman's stated approach to the spring season, noted in the previous post, is somewhat concerning to me as a fan, but I wonder how the players feel about it...

As a fan I'd prefer to hear whether, or not, he believes this stated approach to the spring schedule supports winning games in order to compete for the CAA Championship and a FCS Playoff bid...we've had three disappointing seasons and need to see some progress!

as hard and as long as our guys have worked to get ready to play, as a player, I think I'd want to take the field in March believing my coaching staff was going to do everything possible to win...I'd like to hear Coach Huesman confirm his approach will not sacrifice giving our team its best chance to win...

I expect JMU and Elon will come on the field in March trying to give themselves the best opportunity to win...W&M I'm not sure about, but I sure hope Coach Huesman's approach gives the Spiders our best chance to win too!

Go Spiders!

Our approach is absolutely sacrificing the best chance to win now, and I think it will be a common one. Football's a tough sport, and a major injury in a neutered spring season will take you out of the following full season in the fall as well. It's the primary reason Towson and others have pulled out of a spring season entirely. Have seen several comments from players concerned about the toll a compacted spring season will take on them and whether it's worth risking.

We won't be alone in using this spring season to try to provide a leg up for when things hopefully return to a more normal season in fall 2021.

Yes we won't be alone. I'm skeptical the spring season even occurs, I'm not excited about it & prefer we don't play. Others may feel differently but I'd rather be full go for next Fall and it sounds like Huesman would too.

Are there any players who will be eligible in Spring of 2021 but not eligible in Fall of 2021?

I believe they retain their eligibility, the question should be who will stay next year, and who will leave after spring.

To be honest I’d rather just not play in the spring. It will be a lot harder to make the playoffs and contend for a title in the spring because of only 16 teams making the playoffs and because our schedule is likely too tough to put us in the postseason. We have Elon 2 times and jmu 2 times which is gonna be at least 3 losses likely 4. Huesman likely sees it that way too and that is why he wants to wait and go all out for the fall. Injuries and guys getting nicked up will be a big concern too as there is no way you can play that much football in such a short time span.

Let’s play and win! If we can’t win in the spring what makes folks think you can win the fall. Practice, prepare, suit up and play good fundamental football.

Agree 100%.On top of it,UR will play 3 teams this Spring, each twice and then we will play each of those same 3 teams next Fall.It all seems so ludicrous.Talk about scouting your opponent. We should know tendencies by then although it does give our 86 rostered players an opportunity to play in these Spring scrimmages.

Same here. I would just like to see us figure out a way to play a single game against the Tribe sometime between now and, say, Easter. Keep the Rivalry alive and give us something to whet our appetite for next fall. Play it on the infield of colonial downs halfway between Richmond and Wburg and let as many spectators attend in a 'socially distanced' fashion as possible.

I realize this has a snowball's chance in hell of happening, since Governor won't even allow more than 1000 to attend NASCAR races and college football games with grandstands capable of holding 60k+ but it would be pretty cool.

I beleice that we already came out and said that we’d extend the scholarship window for all our kids. They will call it a season but it’s basically practice with some live scrimmages.

We won't contend for the playoffs in the spring OR the fall. I just want to see some football and I don't care about unrealistic expectations.

Well, I guess we’ll just have to win them all. Oh, that’s right, the Coach intends to play a lot of the younger
players so we’re ready in the fall. Never mind...

But I thought we were circling the WM game this year after they were mean to us at the end of the game last season.

We get W&M 3 times in 2021 (although the first two may feel a little bit like an exhibition)

Sorry to go OT, but I didn't want to start a new thread.

Anyone who was at Robins Stadium for the ODU game in 2012 probably wasn't very surprised last night.

Tyler Heineke was a big weapon for ODU that game and throughout the season.UR on short end,45-37.Remember it well.
Spiders scored 20 in 4thQ to make in look respectable.
Heineke won Payton award in 2012.

UR finished 8-3 that year, was left out of playoffs, got screwed up at UNH(44-40)with a phony out-of-bounds call on a Strauss pass(Laub got injured) near the UNH bench late in 4Q.

One of the few games early I’ve ever left at halftime figuring we were down 35-3. Part of it was because I knew we couldn’t come back, the other part of me was very hungover from the night before. TH is the best CAA qb I have seen live. That includes Flacco and Lauletta.

Heineke was also very good against us when we went to Old Dominion. That was a great game and battle against Heineke and Aaron Corp, the game of Barnette's great "Sports Center Top Ten" catch in the end zone. We should have won that game....
