Armando Bacot, PF - 2019 Offer

That would be cool if he choose VCU. Admittedly, I used to think that VCU's success would drive us to keep up - but it does not seem like Mooney is built that way. VCU piled up appearances since then, and Mooney has slid into mediocrity. Maybe with a new coach, it would provide added incentive, but not Mooney.

I want UR to be great. We don't like UR, but there's nothing better than two good RVA team s going at it. I was there at many epic contests. We say we hate you, but we really want games that decide the conference to happen in RVA. That is great for the A10, for all of us and for RVA. The epic games that I grew up with should happen again.

DaMan, those epic games happened just last year and the Spiders won both. The basketball rivalry continues.

Absolutely and I want more! It's good for VCU and it's good for UR. Local recruits can see the excitement in person. Win some lose some.

Ergo, he's not coming here (which we already knew), but I think this ends VCU's chances as well.

I agree that our chances might be slim, BUT the IMG coach (McAloon) did play for Coach Rhoades at RMC....

Plus he might realize how much he misses his hometown??

Sean was an assistant at Bucknell as well. With his success at St John’s College HS in DC playing in WCAC and now upcoming at IMG coupled with UR being wife’s alma mater,we may be talking about him roaming the sidelines in a couple of years as UR MBBall Head coach. He knows the Jonnie’s and Joe’s for sure.

Yes, if he can recruit half as well as he does at IMG he could have us in the NCAA every year.

Mr. Tbone, sure there is a greater chance that he may decide to go to Duke or another school, but if we don't do all that we can to show him how much we want him here, then we would have lost out without even trying. His family value my opinion therefore it is worth a try. I would rather have tried and failed than not to have tried at all!!

VCU in final 5!
Did Mooney and the admin "do all that we can......"? Did we try and fail? Give us an insider update as to how he arrived at his final 5. What did his family tell you? Maybe they can shed some light on any recruiting shortcomings that we might have!

Might?

The fact that VCU is considered the hometown school and UR isn’t in the conversation says a lot about how our program is perceived. In my opinion, 20% of this is due to the fact that VCU is a much bigger school and has more alumni who live locally. There’s nothing we can do about that. However, 80% is attributed to the success we (and conversely VCU) have had since 2011. If we had made the final four in 2011 and then 7 NCAA tournaments in a row, and VCU had our success, we would be considered the hometown team to play for by these elite level recruits. Unfortunately, Mooney has poorly handled this team and we are stuck until something changes. Either Mooney figures it out (unlikely) or we find a better coach.

Agreed. Gcarter, please spill the beans on what happened here. You have the deep relationship with the family. Please share what you know.

I'm glad someone put the percentages in proper prospective. It's the 80% that has a direct correlation to the other 20%. In other words, if you win, they will come. The 80% needs to change, and fast.

BTW, those hanging their hat last year on the two VCU wins and thinking that's the springboard to greater things, that's not the same VCU team that went to 7 straight tournaments. There are a ton of other games besides the two VCU games, and when you win only 33% of them, that ain't good.

Because I interpreted the 20% as enrollment not attendance, I’m not sure winning basketball games would allow us to pass them in that statistic.

Yes, that is how I intended it to be. 20% of the reason why VCU is considered the hometown school is simply due to the fact the school is much bigger and has more alumni who attended the University and live in the Richmond area. We can't change this aspect, but I don't consider it the primary determinant of why a student athlete would choose VCU over us. We are also a hometown team. I maintain that being successful is the number one driving force for wanting to convince elite level recruits to stay at home (specifically UR) over the blue bloods. If we establish a winning culture, more tournament appearance, A10 championships, etc. UR would also be in consideration for these 4/5 star local athletes that want to represent us as the hometown team over the Duke's and UNC's of the world.

Attendance for the games between us and VCU is pretty comparable considering the fact VCU is 10X our size and have had much more basketball success over the years. However, "if you win they will come" certainly still applies.

a kid and his family are looking at his 4 years only. his expected playing time, the coaches and players he'll be with, the conference, the quality of the education/reputation of the school, the demographics, the facilities and resources, etc.

it's about where you can see yourself for 4 years. not unlike the decision we all made. pretty much all of us here, given the choice between UR and VCU we're choosing UR. that's who we are and what we like. but as much as some here don't like to admit it and instead think VCU students went there only because they couldn't get into UR, that's not the case. A lot of people prefer a school like VCU.

In other words winning matters.

A lot of young men and women prefer a school a certain minimum distance from home.

Wouldnt mind him winding up at UGA. Struggled mightily since the Jim Harrick scandal. Bacot would turn that program around quick.

I'm hearing Chapel Hill. He must really dig the "Carolina Way."
Great barbecue and good grades to bring home, not to mention the nanner puddin. A solid choice! Moreover if you’re not a top ten recruit Duke’s not interested.
