Armando Bacot, PF - 2019 Offer

I watched a lot of Staley professionally. I don't care what gender she is, she was a top-level point guard -- arguably the best ever among women. Dribbling and passing aren't skillsets than men own exclusively. Again, I'm not suggesting she would have scored 20 points a game, but could you send her out there to run an NBA offense effectively for awhile? Absolutely.

And no random Joe could have gone out and beaten her one on one or even come close.

She's not dribbling or passing against air. And who is the random Joe...if it was a good d2 or d3 player I disagree. I'm just surprised you went straight to NBA. I mean the NBA? At least go with low major D1 or something. Which btw she would not have played on those teams either.

I mean I have no prob with the smaller ball, they have smaller hands. But it's def easier to make them. take out all physical/athletic reasons & that alone would be a big adjustment.
I have a problem with the smaller ball! 12 year old boys use the full size ball! college women are bigger than 12 year old boys (ALL of them are bigger than the 12 year old point guards I had on my team!).

I don't think you watched her at the pro level nearly as much or as closely as I did. She could have played a whole lot of places with men. Just an amazing talent. And again, I'm not suggesting she could have played defensive line in the NFL or something, that's an entirely different animal from running point in the NBA.

Fair but I think at 12 they should still be on a smaller ball, and then middle school up the regulation ball. what age do they normally go to bigger size? I don't recall but got to be right around there.

And 8Legger might knock me for this, but the reason they do that for women is to make the game more exciting, more high scoring since it will lack some of the other things the mens game has. Point is they r trying to compensate. If they went to larger ball their shooting % would suffer, although eventually over time I think it might get back to their prior levels. But that's just a guess.

Are you thinking of someone else? Staley was outstanding at UVA, but she averaged 11 a game her 1st year as a pro, and didn't averages double figures any other year, shooting 40% for her career in the WNBA.

Her game wasn't scoring. I wasn't suggesting that she would score a bunch of points. I'm talking specifically about orchestrating an offense, bringing the ball up the court, passing, finding guys, distributing, making things happen. That was her game, or at least what she was best at. I watched her up close for a year in the pros. She was a magician.

Billy Packer had a problem with the smaller ball also. Remember he said Ginny Doyle wouldn't be making all those free throws with a bigger ball? Then, she smoked him in a FT contest using the bigger ball. She made all 20 and he went 12 for 20. R.I.P. Ginny.

Every year, all americans, conference player of the year guys, and other incredible talents who dominated at the college level get invited to an NBA camp and do not make the NBA. But, you think Staley would? I think Jason Kidd and Gary Payton were playing when 5'6 130 pound Staley was a pro, and I'm not sure a career 5.1 to 2.4 assist to turnover ratio in the WNBA screams "magician".

You're assuming that all of those guys are better than any woman could possibly be. I agree that most female basketball players couldn't sniff the NBA, but Dawn Staley was just different. If you didn't see her in person, there's no way I can adequately explain that. She also played the position in basketball that is least dependent upon size or strength, and she was arguably the single greatest woman at that position ever. That's the difference.

I didn't, but I remember Staley & saw her a bit. Staley seems like a very confident of herself person, and if she was honestly asked if she could have played in NBA, I bet even she laughs. the NBA physicality is a big part of league too in its own right. For Staley it's not only a different animal it's a different animal on a different planet in a different universe.

EL, I am going to stop the debate because I keep waiting for you to say "just kidding". The Bones Hyland nonsense was bad enough, but this tops it by miles. There is no way you can be serious here.

just checked and to correct ... 6th grade uses a regulation ball. my kids and most on my team were 11 at the start of the 6th grade season.

our town uses a women's ball for 3rd - 5th grade.
college and pro women are certainly bigger then 3rd - 5th grade boys.

Was thinking the same thing, G. She would laugh and laugh and laugh some more. I think EL is just messing with is. He has to be.

I agree. I think they move too soon to bigger ball. I think 11 or 12 year old boys should use smaller womens size for control and skill development. imo, there may be ppl who have reasons to advocate for not doing it. But look at baseball, 11-12 years olds are still playing little league, smaller dimensions. Then they move up at 13.

the 11-12 year old boys seemed to adjust to the bigger ball no problem. even the little guards. which is why I don't understand adult women playing with a smaller ball.

This thread was started 5 years ago, and he's not even a Spider. Can we finally retire him and bring back Andrew White?
I resurrected this thread because I thought he was a beast and saw we actually made an offer. It seemed to go off the rails quick after that.

Haha, if we're didn't recognize THAT talent, our entire coaching staff should have been fired. He had offers from every program in America.
