Andre Wesson - 2016 Offer

So do you see any similarity with Wesson?
Idk, I watched the video on Wesson and I saw dunks and threes but not a ton of back to basket play. These tapes tend to highlight a guy's strengths so that skill set says SF to me but Im sure it's a small subset of what he does in a full game.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but Buck mostly played at the 3 for us, he produced a lot of his points shooting from the outside/3pt line. During Buck's tenure, GasMo was playing at 4. But yes, Buck is/was a forward.

I think the thing that matters here is really a question of whether or not Wesson is a good low post player. Our most glaring deficiency going into next year isn't necessarily a question of size, we will have at least 4 guys who are 6'8" or taller, but to me, it's a question of who has ability to work down low. Terry is quite good at that, TJ is decent. If Andre is good at that, then yes, he could project at 4 for UR.

TJ is an incredible post player. He is shooting 65% from 2pt range, which is absolutely insane. His at-rim FG% is 85%, which is essentially the highest in the country. He is really, really good in the post, especially since he is also our best or second best passer so he can easily pass out of double teams.

long time ago, so my mind is fuzzy. but with both Beilein and Mooney we've run a lot of 4 out - 1 in offenses. Moliva played a lot of 4, but also played as the 5. and if playing on the perimeter on offense defines a 3, they O'Malley was a 3 too. but I'd call O'Malley a 4 for sure. a stretch 4.

whatever we call him, I think we could play a guy like Wesson with 3 smaller guys and a post if we don't have small guards. I wouldn't want a smaller 4 with SDJ and Fore out there, but some times with bigger guards/wings like De'Monte and Nick then sure. that group is plenty long and can handle switches. and hopefully by then PF or Golden are tough inside behind them.

This talk about Buck and where he fit brings back such memories of us trotting out a lineup of Sylla, Thomas, Buck, Moliva, and Steenberge.

Yeah, we run a lot of high-post offense, at least at the start of our offensive sets. This often looks like we have three guys minimum outside the arc, sometimes even 4. A lot of times, it has a low post player who "runs the baseline" (essentially cutting from corner to paint to block and back out to corner). TJ is usually our high post, TA is usually our low post.

We don't have a guy who sits on the low block for extended periods so we don't require a behemoth to play that kind of role, but it does often mean that someone like TA gets the ball 8 feet out from the basket, on either side of the lane or closer to the baseline, and he then has to back his man down. TJ does this well too.

If TJ is that guy next year, then someone has to play the high post. If TJ plays the high post which he's very good at due to his passing, then someone has to fill that low-post (4 spot) for us. Right now, the options to play that low post are PF or GrantG, or someone who is probably a bit undersized. It's a bit of a conundrum in my view.

while I love TJ in the high post, his low post game has come so far that it's now the best part of his game. but if a really big 5 covers him, move him to the high post. otherwise, I think Marshall could be the high post guy.

I think that's an option. TJ is the best low post option on our roster for next year, at least based on what (little) we've seen of the other bigs.

It'll be interesting to see if MW does run some high post for us at some point. He has not really done this yet but yes, he's an option there I think.

Bucknor played the 3 when the front line included Steenberge and Moliva as a senior.

But what was Jamaal Scott? He played with Buck instead of Mo when Buck was a junior.

I think I am looking more at Defense than Offense. A forward who defenses the post is a 4 to me even if he plays perimeter offense.

You can put TJ pretty much anywhere in our offense and he is an asset. He is a great, perhaps the best passer, we have had out of the high post, and his quickness in his shot release and use of the backboard so well, makes him really tough in the low post. Plus, he can step outside and hit deep 3's.

If CM could develop a prototypical big man for his offense from scratch, I think he would come up with TJ.

I just don't see them making him an offer with their one remaining spot. I do think he is a transfer candidate to go to OSU in a couple years, though, if he goes somewhere else and plays really well. That's the one thing that scares me about him potentially coming here.

Thad would offer just to keep Mooney from getting him. Bad blood between him and Mooney since the fight in the tunnel.

Would he take a preferred walk-on at OSU? Let's see how this plays out, I believe he would be a good fit in our system

why do some here think OSU won't "waste" an offer on him? because we're involved? by all accounts, Wesson is a stud. he was under the radar which is why we have a real shot, but he's blown up this year.

people said the same about another AW who blew up late. and yeah, it didn't work out at KU. but last I checked, kid's averaging 17 and 6 in the Big 10. he's a player. don't think a kid's not just because his earlier offers aren't from the highest majors.

There is still no love lost between Beilien and Matta to this day. Mainly because Thad is an a-hole.

On Wesson, if Thad is coming to his games, than they obviously have some serious interest in him. I don't neccesarily think it is a complete slam dunk that he goes to OSU if they offer. Maybe, he wants to forge his own path and not play with his brother.

One thing appears pretty certain, Wesson is going to be picking up some BCS offers soon, and that can not bode well for our chances.

I got the impression that OSU may not go his way mostly because of what their needs are. I don't follow the Buckeyes but a quick look at their website shows 12 guys on this year's roster, only one senior graduating, so that means 2 ships available next year, although verbal commits has them having 3 open, so go figure. 2 of the 3 open spots per VC are filled by PFs and there are 3 rostered SFs on the team already, all freshmen and sophomores. So theoretically 5 guys around/in front of him at OSU.

I suspect what folks mean is that there's a lot of roster depth at the forward position on that team right now, and virtually none at SG (1 player), so if they are going to offer, it seems likely to be on a guard, not another forward.

But hey, I stayed at a holiday inn express again last night, so what do I know...

I wonder if the Freshman Lane from their site is a walk on? If so...
Next year's roster
3 C
1 PF
3 SF
1 SG
2 PG

2 2016 commits at PF, 1 2017 at C (other Wesson), 1 2018 at SG

1 2016 offer to a C, If...
The younger Wesson replaced that offer in 2017, and the 6"4' 230 SF on the roster can play SG then they may look at our Wesson. If not they most likely will look for a guard first. And as others have stated it is easy for them to talk to both Wessons at the same time.

Yes, Lane is a walk-on.

OSU is already light on guards this year, with just the three all in the frosh/soph class. But with none graduating, they may be ok with that for next year, sliding a 3 down at times to help fill the gap. Their recruiting looks to be guard heavy for 2017.

Would be a nice addition to our already signed award winning players in Buck and Sherrod

Okay which one of coaches are we going to send to close this deal?
We need someone who can sell our product and can get a signature on the line. Time for someone to make this happen. I am getting tired of us always being the bridesmaid! Maybe it is time for big guns. Maybe Gill and Crutcher need to get involved(complying with NCAA rules)and explain the long term benefits of a UR education and its commitment to his success.

Gill was already involved. He was at the game when Andre visited with his parents and introduced them to Mrs. Mooney and others. Let's get this done. It's a great time to be a Spider! Roll Spide! OSC

Mooney has to do it.
