2025 Baseball Season

Gameday! The Spiders (15-2) open Atlantic 10 play with a three game series against St Bonaventure (7-8), starting today at 1:30 PM ET. All games should be streaming on ESPN+. Starters for the Spiders, according to game notes:
  • Friday (1:30) : Esteban Rodriguez
  • Saturday (1:00): Chase Topolski
  • Sunday (12:30): Jackson Hinchliffe
As MDSpider mentioned above, the Bonnies have been outperforming their pre-season ranks so far this season. A perennial underperformer in the conference, I was clicking around and I don't think they have made it to the Conference tournament since 2017. They have put together a fairly tough non-conference slate (Top 50 according to Warren Nolan), including a series against Morehead State, mid-week game against Old Dominion, and a recent trip to Tennessee to take on Vandy (1 game) and UT (weekend series).

Their most stand-out stat is their baserunning, as they are stealing almost 3 bags a game (2.93), good for top 10 in the country. Almost all of their 44 steals are coming from three players: Jayce Tharnish (14 for 14), Mike Gunning (11 for 12), and Paul Vossen (10 for 10). Tharnish, the Redshirt Sophomore Outfielder, is the Bonnies most impressive all around hitter, and has already picked up A-10 Player of the Week honors this season (Week of 2/17). He leads the team in AVG (.375), OBP (.462), SLG (.643), Runs (20), HR (4), and RBIs (15). He has gone deep in the first at bat of the game in two straight now, so something to look out for.

Michael Salina was on some people's Preseason All-A10 teams, and has had a back and forth first four starts to the year. After giving up 5 runs to Gardner-Webb in 3.1 innings in the first start of the year, he threw 11 combined scoreless innings with 16 Ks against Morehead and Middle Tennessee. In his outing on 3/8 against Tennessee he pitched 3 innings, and let up 3 earned on 3 hits and 2 walks. On the season, he sports a 4.15 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with an astonishing 13.5 K/9 and a .239 BAA. Another pitcher to watch would be reliever Luke Roggenburk, who has not made an appearance since 3/2, but leads the Bonnies in ERA (3.21) and Saves (2).

Spiders have to find a way to take two here on their home field. Keep the momentum!

E-Rod gives up a leadoff double, but Bona can't get him home.

Spiders then strike first in the bottom of the first with a Jaffe single, advance on a groundout, and a hard shot by O'Brien goes off the shortstop's wrist and into the OF (charged as an error) to plate the game's first run.

Gorgeous diving catch by Whitley for the first out of the third. Ump went to the replay to review and upheld the call.

Whitley gets a single, then steals second and third, Arcamone walks to put runners on the corners with one out, and Whitley is brought home on an O'Brien sac fly. 3–0 Spiders.

Elko gets a leadoff single, but gets thrown out trying to steal second on a questionable call. But then a Larson single, AOK HBP, and beautiful McInnis bunt single loaded the bases.

Whitley deep fly to the warning track didn't quite make it out of the park, but the fielder wasn't able to corral it and was charged with an error that brought home Larson and kept the bases loaded. Jaffe then laces a double down the left-field line to score two more and make it 6–0. Arcamone then comes up and scores Whitely via a groundout for a 7–0 lead before Bona can get out of the inning.

Have to think Bona starter will be done after this.

Bona sandwiches a pair of singles around a strikeout and E-Rod's day is done. Bilka coming in.

Wow, Spiders get a break as AOK was seemingly pulled off the bag at 2nd by a high throw on a fielder's choice, but the umps confirmed the runner out after review. Sure looked like he was safe to me.

Spiders get out of the top of the 5th with no damage.

Whitley with a carbon-copy diving catch to end the top of the 7th with the Spiders still up 7–0. Bilka rolling along on the mound.

Edit: And then Jaffe blasts a shot to lead off the bottom of the inning to make it 8–0.

Edit 2: Arcamone makes it back-to-back dingers and it's 9–0!

Deep Arcamone sac fly to the wall scores Dosenbach to make it 10–0. Then Wilga fielder's choice that almost went down the line scores Whitley and it's 11–0.

Edit: Elko clean hit to shallow left that gets misplayed by the fielder on the bounce scores Wilga from second, though they scored it a double. 12–0.
