2018 Men’s Lacrosse Year in Review: #15 Richmond Spiders

Circle These Dates
  • 2/9 (at Maryland): Beware of Richmond. The Spiders are a pretty competitive team despite not being on the winning end of most of their games against high quality opponents. This will be the first time Richmond takes on Maryland and will look to provide an early season upset.
  • 2/23 (vs. Notre Dame): The Spiders host six straight games at Robins Stadium after beginning the season with two games on the road. They have a couple of marquee matchups in that span, one being the Fighting Irish. Despite being shutout in the first half, Richmond scored six straight goals to take a short one-goal lead over Notre Dame before the Irish came back to win.
  • 3/1 (vs. Duke): After Notre Dame comes reigning national runner-up Duke. Richmond got off to a 2-1 start after the first quarter, but the Blue Devils exploded with all eight second half goals and cruised to a 10-goal win. No Justin Guterding or a few others from last year’s squad, which could help the Spiders.
  • 3/29 (at Virginia): Richmond always plays their in-state rival very well. They nearly defeated the Cavaliers in 2017 at home and had a third quarter lead last year in Charlottesville. But Virginia scored seven of the final eight goals in the game to win by four. The Cavaliers hope to be contenders for a national championship this year.
  • 4/6 (at Jacksonville): Richmond plays the toughest nonconference schedule in terms of winning percentage of their opponents out of the SoCon teams. Jacksonville is looking to become a rising power in the south for lacrosse with John Galloway at the helm. The Spiders took both meetings last year, including in the SoCon title game in overtime.

Actually, I think Chemotti has built a program that is growing past the Southern Conference.
They don’t shy away from having tough opponents and have done an excellent job of recruiting.
While Richmond is a very young program, it is recognized has a solid team that no one considers it
anthing but a tough opponent.

Maryland opens up on 2/2 hosting Bucknell

  • 2/9 (vs. Richmond): This will be the first time the two programs will face each other. I’ll be really interested to see how this goes as the Spiders have shown that they can compete with the very best. They may not put up wins, but they sure are a tough opponent to take on.
