Spider
Game Notes say we are going with E-Rod today and Chase Topolski tomorrow.
Penn State took 2 of 3 games in the Puerto Rico Challenge to start the season, followed by a three game sweep of Longwood last weekend. They did not have a Friday game last weekend, and one of the two pitchers Saturday was
Ryan DeSanto (formerly at Saint Joseph's), so I think it's possible we see him on the mound today. After posting back to back sub-4 ERA seasons at SJU, he is off to a stellar start in the 2025 campaign, with a 2-0 record, 1.13 ERA, 14 Ks and 2 walks in 8 innings. Hitter to watch is
Paxton Kling, who receieved Big 10 Player of the Week and Perfect Game National Player of the Week. In the three games against Longwood, Kling "collected 7 hits in 13 at-bats, including a double, 4 home runs and 6 RBI." He is slashing .440/.533/1.080 on the season, along with 2 stolen bases.
Boston College has had a ton of postponed/cancelled games already, but is off to a middling start. They take on W&M today before heading to Richmond. They were picked to finish last in the ACC this year, but they do have a couple of hitters that are off to decent starts, and as a team they run the bases well, stealing almost four bags a game. One hitter to highlight would be
Kyle Wolff, Junior 1B out of Andover, MA. He has collected a hit in every game this season, and is slashing .381/.480/.810, with 3 home runs and 6 RBIs. Interestingly, he has already been hit by a pitch 3 times, so interested to see if it's a stance thing or just a coincidence.
Toledo's record is nothing to write home about, but according to
Warren Nolan they have had 7th hardest Strength of Schedule, as their opponents are a combined 30-4 (I expect this to drastically change as the season goes on, but still fun to report). After taking 1 of 4 games from Oregon (picked to win B10) to start the season, they dropped 2 of 3 at High Point, and before coming to Pitt Field they will take on W&M and VCU. While the team was not picked to have much success in the MAC this year, according to
Perfect Game, they had three players named to Preseason All-Conference Team:
3B Troy Sudbrook, OF Luke Leto, and SP Jacob Tabor. Sudbrook is off to probably the best start of the Rockets hitters, sporting a .276 average, eight hits, three doubles, and four RBIs on the season. I don't think we will see Tabor, who pitched the opening game of the HPU series, but two Toledo pitchers have won MAC pitcher of the week honors already, RJ Schunk (Week 1) and Logan Jones (Week 2), so two more names to watch.
Not sure what everyone's expectations are for the weekend, but I think we'd be happy taking two games out of three here!
